So I'm back from AX, and the majority of my spending went into import games. I got...

+ Game & Watch Collection (difficult to get not only because it's an import, but ONLY available to Japanese Nintendo Club members)

+ Daigasso Band Brothers (Rhythm game with classic Nintendo and world tunes in midi format and lots of additional instrument styles like acoustic guitar and metal drums)

and my crown jewel that I'm obsessed with, Super Robot Wars W

For the unintroduced, Super Robot Wars is a long standing Japanese franchise where popular robots of yesteryear (to prevent their respective story spoilers) are put together into a complex story with strategic role playing game elements, and it's maddeningly addictive. I love the Gundams from Endless Waltz.

But the game has made me realize just how many giant robots in pop culture there are. I mean, I'm gonna check out torrents for Mazinger Z, one of Japan's staple giant robot animes apparently.

So what are you favorite robots from all across time people?

I grew up on Gundam myself, and Wing Zero has always been my fav, though Deathscythe Hell was cool too (The Dark Knight in robot form?)
But did I mention the Power Rangers in their ninja arc? Ninja robots? Hell yes!

If we're talking Gundams, Char's Zaku is awesome. Though, out of the Wing series, I like Deathscythe and Heavyarms.

Mazinger is a classic, you should check it out. Though I honestly only like Voltron because the toys were far and away the best toys ever. Die cast metal lions that form into a giant robot? ********. YES.

Big O is cool, if just to watch Roger Smith yell "SHOWTIME!" and have Beck ******** with him. Too bad I've only ever seen Big O being used in tutorials for SRW.

Gao Gai Gar is pretty ******** awesome, with the Golden Hammer.

Currently my favorite are the Ganmen from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Mostly because the giant faces are cool, and the entire series runs off of hot blooded manliness (Plus, it's hard not to like space operas) .And you can't go wrong with Transformers. I think I just like giant robots that turn into other things. Though, I still like Megas XLR even though he really doesn't turn into anything else.

I always wished they would translate SRW. It's a good series. I know two of them are on the Game Boy, but I've yet to see them. Plus, I really want to play the newer ones.

I never got super into Gundam. . .

But instead, I became obsessed with Robotech.

... don't ask. I just loves it. ;P *shrug* I waited forever for them to continue the next season where the first/second/whatever seasons left off.

I watched it religiously. D:!

Gundam is alright, though I only got into Wing, 008th MS Team, and G Gundam. And G Gundam mostly because of MASTER ASIA and GERMAN RACER X. G Gundam was great just because it was ridiculous. The Char character, however, is always awesome.

I never got super into Robotech, but I always appreciated it. I could never sit down and watch it for some reason though.

This hand of mine is glowing with an awesome power! It's telling me to defeat you!

xD

oh, and Gao Gai Gar I think has caught my interest. I believe he's one of my units, and he's an extremely dependable one. The robot I'm thinking of has this finisher move where he plugs both his hands into the enemy robot and tears out it's core or something. Awesome attack man.

Is it the one with the lion on the chest?

Take this! My love, my anger, AND ALL OF MY SORROW! SHINING FINGER!

Yeah, Gao Gai Gar is generally a pretty good one along with the Gundam Teams and the Mazinger teams since they're staples.

And yeah, he's the one with the lion on his chest. He'll get a big gold hammer super later.

08th MS Team gets the win for my Japanese mecha money. I love Wing out of nostalgia, but 08th MS Team actually makes a war feel like a war and not superhero robots. It's dirty, it's gritty, and it's as close to real as anything with giant robots can get.

All time favorite though has to be the Transformers. UK G1 comics for preference, even if Furman's got an unadulterated Grimlock fetish. If we're not talking GIANT robots though, Beast Wars is the smartest, most adult kids show ever written short of Batman: the Animated Series. Small cast=characterization that was previously unheard of in a half hour format. Code of Hero is a masterpiece.

Oh god, yeah. ******** Dinobot was awesome. That was a great episode in a pretty good series.

And yeah, thats why 08th was my favorite. The Gundams just happened to be another weapon in a bigger war, and not an ultimate weapon like they're usually portrayed as. I liked Wing for what it was at the time (Though, I preferred the beginning of the series to the later parts) and G Gundam was fun, but 08th was actually really cool.

G Gundam was great for absurdity and being so non-PC you have to laugh.

I liked the fact that Master Asia would ride in on a horse, then go into his Gundam, then have his horse go into a horse Gundam and ride it.

And yeah, lol Holland Gundam.

I couldn't believe at first just what portrayed countries in G Gundam. Was it made back when political sensitivity didn't exist?

Did I mention I saw Transformers the movie a few days earlier? Pretty good, but definitely some rough spots. Like, stop the teenage love story and get with the honking big robots.

Optimus Prime FTW

Eh, G Gundam was made in Japan. Japan doesn't give a ******** about racial sensitivity.

Yeah, Transformers needed less human bullshit and more warring between giant robots. But it was still surprisingly cool.

Slow to start, but once Optimus shows up s**t picks up. My favorite is still Scorpinok out of that movie.

Needed more Soundwave though. Best. Transformer. Ever.

Grendizer is the robot that cradled my childhood.

It was extremely popular because they had been very liberal in the French translation. The weapons names, as you see in the site, are a more of the boring side. But, in the French version, they gave crazy names such as Astero-Hache, Corno-Fulgure and Fulguropoing! For some reason, it worked.

Also, the story of this evil empire looking to track down this rogue prince and conquer this new planet at the same time was fun.
