But I hear they don't... and there was some ruckus about it some time ago. Though, this may have been a year or two ago and maybe has been resolved since.
But, I decided to get my true MPG/hwy... sooo, I filled my tank, reset my little thingie, and drove for 3.3 hrs about...
At 130 miles I had exactly 3/4 tank... when I got home (170 miles), I had used LESS than 1/3 of my tank.
My tank is APROXIMATELY... 10 gallons. (It's on E, I fill it up, it only allows around 9.5 in at most)
Given, I'm told it's probably 10.5 (.5 would give me an extra 20-25 miles at best)
So... 130 x 4 (cause it was at 1/4 tank usage) is 520 miles out of 10 gallons... is 52 mpg.
170 (let's round to 1/3 for sake of whatever) Will bring me to 51 mpg. Even if I factor in that possible .5 extra, I'd lose 1-2 mpg total... So still around 50 mpg highway.
I was actually extremely AMAZED by this. I thought I got around 40 at best. =OO
This thing is OLD. '94, Saturn, SE 2, Twin Cam, Aluminum engine, of the assortment. It has ...232400 miles on it at the moment, the clutch slips a little, and I am due for an oil change. =D
SOOO... what are your thoughts on this? My parents SUV gets...13-14mpg... incity, I think. 20mpg highway? notsure.
Also: What are you cars, and do you have to pay a pretty penny for your gas?

The actual way to measure, at least how I always do it, is fill the tank, reset the trip odometer, drive til you're almost out, then fill it -- record the amount they actually put in your tank, then use that with the mileage you have on the odometer. :3
That wouldn't work if you wanted to do it all on highway, or something, like in your example, but it's how I track my average usage.
That said, my car fluctuates between 18-22 MPG. Depends on a lot of things .. if I'm just driving around town, if I make any highway runs, if I use AC, things like that. I have a '95 Mercury Sable. Heh.

I think hybirds are pretty kickass.....and I'm seriously looking into one for my next car. Here's my baby: 2003 Volkswagen Beetle (name: Eleanor Rigby...yeah I'm cheesy)...now complete with Dr. Pepper antenna topper and penguin seat covers and customized license plates...I love my baby. She usually gets about 25-30 mpg...which isn't bad for a tiny little 14 gallon tank. My dad's got a suburban though...thing's a beast..if he's lucky it gets 15 mpg.

Heh. Aye. I tended to always just reset that... *searches your post...* odometer... when I fill up... then I USUALLY wait til 1/2 tank exactly and average it out frequently. USUALLY it reads me out to 42-44 mpg, when I do it that way... but, I haven't EVER driven pure highway like I just did yesterday, so. I think the absolute worst MPG I ever got was in the low 30's (whoah, big difference? ;P), and I was... kinda... ... having fun driving a stick. ;DD intown... all the time... I was really rough. Heee. <.<;; BUTWHATCANI SAY? soon as I see 55mph limit when I was having fun, from a dead stop. I HAD TO. ~!!~!~!~!~! Not anymore. Had my fill of fun. =D

My car, The Landboat, is a 1990 Lincoln Towncar. 13 miles a gallon if I'm goddamn lucky.
Don't care though, I work close to home, and this car is absurdly comfortable. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I so most definitely need to christen this car. twisted

I have a Toyota Yaris Hatchback (or Liftback) and it is a gas sipper. I did use calculate how I did spend gas on an average use (highway + town) and its 6,9 liters per 100 kilometers which is 41 mpg.
In short, I don't get out of town, I refill it on about every two weeks.
