Kane and Akane

Kane kicked a stone unhappily, skidding it from its loose place from the now uneven footpath. When she had been a girl, this place shone like a newly minted coin. Now it was run-down and dirty and dilapidated- this house that her father built for her mother, the house she never saw.

It wasn’t as though it was her father’s fault. How could it be? Kaiba was... Kaiba was Kaiba! Kane snorted, staring at Kaiba Mansion. How could Daddy be wrong? It’s all Mummy’s fault! her breath choked in her throat and she glared. I’m only upset because of... all the stuff. Eerinna moving in with her Kirin toyboy and Gamell getting all worried over some one night stand... My family is falling apart! Kane shook the spear-headed fence poles in her rage.

”You looking for someone?” asked a voice from the shadows of the overgrown trees inside the compound.

Kane gasped and stepped away from the fence.

”Don’t get shy on me now.” He leant forward and his yellow eyes glinted in the sunset.

Kane took another step back. “I have every right to be here,” she said, trying to put on a brave face, as though she hadn’t just been spazzing out. “I used to live here. We still own this place. You’re a squatter.”

”That is such an ugly word,” said Yellow-eyes quietly. “Such an ugly word from such pretty lips.” His eyes narrowed as he looked her up and down. “So you must be one of Kaiba’s many daughters.”

”I’m Kane Kaiba,” said Kane, approaching just a tiny bit. “And I only have two sisters. And one of them doesn’t live with us. Or speak to us. Or... even exist,” she scowled again.

Yellow eyes smiled. She could tell he smiled because his eyes wrinkled up a little at the corners. “Well. Well well well. I had no idea.” He withdrew a little more into the shade. “I think you should know a little something about your daddy. Why not come inside and I’ll tell you?”

Kane blinked. “Um,” she didn’t know what to say to that. There were too many reactions. Like ‘DON’T YOU TALK ABOUT MY FATHER LIKE THAT!’ and ‘OMFG don’t go into a house with creepy guy!’ and ‘Shut up!’ “...” she said.

”It is your house,” he said quietly.

Kane shook her head. “Yes. Yes it is. My house. And I can choose not to go in if I don’t want to. With a person I just met who hasn’t even told me his name,” she rationalised out loud.

”A name is a powerful thing,” Yellow-Eyes said. “You would like mine?”

”Yes,” said Kane. “No. I’m still not going in there.”

”Do the bad scary ponies frighten you?” he purred.

”No!” insisted Kane. “And... well I don’t know you.”

”Would you like to?” asked Yellow-Eyes.

”I want your name,” said Kane stubbornly.

”You want a lot of things,” he said,” and one of them is to learn about the skeletons in Daddy-dearest’s closet.”

Kane frowned. “I know about my Daddy.”

”Do you?”

”Yes! Yes I do. I don’t know you and I don’t care. And I’m leaving, Yellow-Eyes!” She spoke the last words without thinking, wishing them back with all her might.

”Yellow-Eyes?” he asked slowly.

”Good-bye!” She wheeled and dashed away back home.

”Yellow-Eyes,” hissed the creature in the shade and he squinted at the setting sun. He smirked and his white teeth shone.”

Kane sat at home, her pokey little home, and distractedly brushed her hair. Up, slow stroke down. Up, slow stroke down. She was thinking about Yellow-Eyes. And what he’d said to her. About her father. And her sisters. Do three girls amount to ‘many’? What’s many? Is many more than three? Maybe Yellow-Eyes is just a bit... coo coo?

A knock on the door interrupted her many and troubled thoughts. “Yeah?” called Kane.

”Hi~iii,” sang Eerinna as she opened Kane’s door and sailed in. “Just came to visit my dear sister. How are you?”

”I’m... good,” said Kane.

Eerinna’s smile sank. “Kane? Is something wrong?”

”I think it’s just someone a guy said to me,” said Kane in an attempt at dismissiveness.

Eerinna took the comb from Kane and sat down behind her with some hair treatment. “A guy? What guy? What did he say? Something bad? Upsetting? Nasty?”

Kane paused and looked around. “You’re awfully interested...”

Eerinna turned Kane’s head back and squeezed out some hair crème. “Not to rub it in too much, but Zared and I are going smoothly and there are very few dramas. I’d like one of yours.”

Kane smiled. Her sister had grown a lot with this man. But she was still the same sweet little girl who had clung to her when they were small. And then while Kane was still small and Eerinna had grown. Kane retold her story. Eerinna was a good listener and she had this way of making Kane’s hair so nice and soft. She mmmed and ahhhd all the way through. Until Kane asked “How many do you think constitutes ‘many’?”

”What do you mean?” asked Eerinna.

”Well, Yellow-Eyes said that I must be one of Kaiba’s many daughters...” Kane watched her sister’s already quite pale face turn to the colour of curdled milk. “What is it?”

”Uh, nothing at all. He was just pulling your leg, Kane. Being stupid.”

”Eerinna...” Kane’s face went numb and her hands went cold.

Eerinna put down the comb and turned away. “I... I can’t lie to you so I won’t.”

***

Kane raced up the cracked path to Kaiba mansion and belted on the door with her fist. “Hey! Yellow-Eyes! Hey!”

The door creaked open. “Get in if you're coming in,” hissed Yellow-Eyes. “Get out of the sun, for pity’s sake.”

Kane edged the door open enough to pass through and closed it behind her. While she let her eyes adjust, she said to the splotchy blackness of the hall where he lurked. “I need to know what you know about my father.”

Kane closed to the door behind her and surveyed Yellow-Eyes. He had lovely thick red hair like a flame and... maybe it was just that it was daylight and he might have been asleep before her visit but... he was quite shirtless and his chest was very nicely defined.

Yellow-Eyes ntoiced her appraisal and the corner of his mouth twitched up. He stretched beside her to the coat-stand and pulled on a black overcoat. "So, little miss Kane," he said, flipping his hair out of his collar, "what made you change your mind?"

"That's... private," said Kane. "I want to know what you know about my dad."

"Becauuuuse?" drawled Akane.

"Are you going to not tell me if I don't tell you why I decided to come back?"

"That sounds fair to me," said Akane, crossing his arms obstinately and smirking.

Kane frowned. "I was talking to my younger sister about what you said." She glanced back at him to see his expression become even more self-satisfied. "And she wouldn't explain it to me. Said she couldn't."

Akane nodded and motioned for her to follow him. "Come on, I'll take you somewhere quiet."

Kane followed Akane through the dim corridors that smelled like dust and disuse. She balked slightly when he opened his door and strode in without offering her the first step. She blinked in the dimness and followed him in cautiously.

Akane lit some thick candles and arranged them around a coffee table in the front of the room. He glanced sparingly at his unmade bed, but he didn't particularly care. This girl wanted to ask him some questions.

"Um," said Kane quietly.

Yellow-Eyes had gone to a cabinet and fished a bottle of some deep brown liquor and two snifters out. "Sit down, girlie, this will take a while."

Kane sat on a short black stool and stared at her folded hands. A snifter appeared on the table in her line of vision and a shot poured in. "I don't drink," she said thickly.

"You might," said Akane simply, sitting across from her. "So. Dear Kaiba. Let's corrode the shine from his veneer."

Kane frowned. "You don't like him," she said and t wasn't a question.

"My father doesn't like him," said Akane, sipping from his glass. "Family thing, I suppose."

"So, why are you helping me?"

Akane swirled his liquor. "I'm not really. I'm ruining your father's image for you. It's a win-win for me."

Kane frowned. "Will you just tell me, please?"

Akane stretched and tousled his very nice hair. "Kaiba screwed Brittania," he said.

Kane's mouth dropped open. "Wh... wha... when?" she asked.

"Not long ago," he replied, savoring her shock and waiting for her pain. "And what has that got to do with what you were asking?"

Kane looked at him with shock and horror in her eyes.

"Only that she got pregnant from it," said Akane.

Some part of Kane was still logical. "She has a mate, you know. It's probably his!"

"Her mate was a teen at the time, so I thoroughly doubt it." He refilled his glass. "That. And one of the girls is a blue eyes."

"A... a blue-eyes white dragon?" she gasped. "Oh... oh... but..." She shook her head as if to clear it. "Why would my sister hide something so serious from me?"

Akane smirked again. "Because your darling little sister is helping rear the little spawn. Brittania swore her to secrecy. She doesn't let the kiddies out. Of course, Medusa has dealings with Belladonna, who has dealings with my father... and Medusa is always over there for dinner." He winked at his poor guest. "They say Jin Kyoshi is a great cook."

Kane was so totally stunned. She couldn't feel her nose or lips and her hands had no fingers.

Akane swigged down his second shot and motioned to her with his empty glass. "Drink it. You'll feel better."

Kane mechanically dumped the liquor down her throat and gasped at it burned her. She choked and held her throat.

Akane refilled her glass and his own.

Kane swallowed and cleared her throat. "How... how many... others."

Akane ran a finger around the rim of his glass. "Two dragon girls... two boys and another girl."

Kane stared at her glass and felt tears well in her eyes. "I should go," she whispered.

Akane nodded. "Yes, you should."

She stood up, the alcohol had not quite affected her yet. She turned the handle of his door.

"He doesn't know, you know. Your father," said Akane, surveying his glass.

Kane sniffed and nodded and left.

Kane was completely floored. She was shattered beyond reparation. At least, that's how it felt. Daddy... Daddy... It was such a betrayal. Sisters... brothers... No.

Her steps faltered and suddenly the ground was up and the ceiling was very close to her face.

"Alright, Princess, the floor here is not very good for lying."

"Yellow-Eyes..." He had his arm around her. He had caught her as she fell.

"That's me," he said quietly. "Come on, I'll put you to bed and then take you home at sunset."

Kane cried harder. There was a hole in her chest where all the tears were flowing out. It was so raw and painful.

Yellow-Eyes rolled his eyes and snorted. "We're a crying drunk, then. Up you get, Princess." He lifted her up and helped her find her feet.

Kane was going the wrong way through the corridors. "No..." she mumbled.

"Oh yes," said Yellow-Eyes, pushing open his bedroom door. He slung her onto his bed and pulled off her boots. He pulled up the covers and went to his cabinet for another bottle of something strong.

Kane blinked and realised she was in some stranger's bed... his slept-in bed! She writhed and tried to throw off the blanket. It seemed to much heavier than a normal blanket.

"No, no," said Yellow-Eyes, striding over and tucking her back in bed. He folded the blanket down into hospital corners and pressed her down into his bed. "Princess, sleep now. I'll take you home at dusk." He stood up and bit the top off the bottle he'd picked and plucked the cork from his teeth and took a swallow. "Don't struggle. Just go to sleep."

Kane watched his groggily and her eyes went out of focus. "Yellow-Eyes..." She said slowly.

Akane scoffed and plugged his bottle back up. "My name is Akane."

"Kane?" asked Kane.

"No," growled Kane. "Akane."

"Akane..." she said softly. "I like Yellow-Eyes better."

Akane snorted again and leant back. "Suit yourself, Princess." He left and closed the door behind him.

Kane stared at the ceiling. It had cigarette burns on it. She wondered how he'd gotten them up there. There was also a spider sitting in its web and three abandoned webs, as though he was in the property business. The ceiling was a nice dull gold tan kind of colour. It looked like this was the left wing of the house. The one for the family or visitors, not the kids. There was some partially defaced moulding around the corners. the bed had these really nice velvet claret drapes which...

Akane watched the light fade from the slit in the curtains. He sipped from a glass. He had a great aptitude for alcohol; he was only mildly sloshed. His sister, though, could drink him under the table. She was a sweet drunk.

The dusk turned to twilight and he drank off his flute and set it on the table, amidst many rings on the lovely expensive wood. He stood up and crossed to his bed, looking down on the pale princess in the dark sheets. He would have liked to keep her. There was a handy basement. But no. He should give her back. Seeing Kaiba break would be great.

She murmured in her sleep. Such pretty lips. Maybe a taste? Hmmm. He traced some hair off her brow. "Princess, don't sleep through the night."

Kane felt something and turned away. Her head hurt and sleep was soooooo good.

"Don't make me keep you."

Kane's eyes snapped open and she lunged away from Yellow-Eyes and nearly fell off the bed. "Wha-what?"

Akane yanked the curtains open. "It's night. I told you I'd take you home at night."

"Yes... you did. Thanks..." She looked around. "My shoes?"

"Down there," said Akane, pointing. "I'm ready when you are."

Akane pulled on her boots and clutched her head. "Owch. My head hurts..." She shot him an angst-ridden look. "I blame you for this."

"I didn't shove the stuff down your throat." Akane shoved open the door.

Akane stumbled after him. "You told me it would make me feel better!"

Akane whirled and she nearly walked into him. "You're not thinking about your precious daddy screwing some random whore, are you?" he hissed. "Then I'd say it worked and you can get off my ever-hating back about it." He stalked away.

Kane pouted and followed him. "Sorry," she said quietly. She followed him silently until the front door. "I can go home from here..." she assured him.

"No, I'm taking you home," said Akane sternly, taking her by the upper arm firmly until she shrugged out of his grasp. If I don't, she could be eaten and then all the effort would be wasted and no miserable Kaiba.

Kane followed him again. Her head was really aching. She didn't know any remedies for a hangover. Gamell probably did. Maybe she should stop by.

It was deep night when Akane dropped Kane at her front door. "Goodnight Princess." He turned and dissolved into the night.

Kane had her mouth open as if to bid him a goodnight. She closed her lips and frowned. She unlocked her door and went inside. Then she crept back out and said "Goodnight..."

Two days after her misadventure with Akane, Kane went to see her father. And then half an hour later she ran out the door, crying her eyes out. She ran and ran and stumbled and ran some more and ended up in the lee of Green Lady mountain. She snarled at the mountain and found a big rock which she lobbed at the awful place, the reminder of her father's infidelity, the rumour of siblings unmet.

"Little girl lost in the woods," hissed a voice.

Kane looked around. "Who... who...?"

Medusa walked out of the shade of a cave. "Don't you have somewhere to be?" asked Medusa. "Or I can give you somewhere to be."

"N-no," said Kane. "I'm... I'm meeting Akane," she said- this girl was obviously hella scary mean, evil and serious, and the only person she knew who was scary and serious was Akane. "I've just... lost him?"

Medusa smiled. "Oh really? Then I shall take you to him." She seemed to float across the ground. "He's in there," she hissed, pointing to a nearby cave.

"Thanks," said Kane hastily and she almost ran into the cave. "Bad idea," she murmured. "Hello?" she called. "Oh!" She said. Really bad! A rock scattered around, disturbed by someone's foot. "H...hello?" she asked hoarsely.

"Hi there," said Yuzuki cheerfully, scaring Kane out of her wits. "Were you looking for someone?"

Kane hyperventilated, but this girl looked nice enough. "Um... yeah I was trying to get away from Medusa and I said I was looking for Akane..."

"Oh, hi then, you must be Kane, Akane is my brother," said Yuzuki sweetly. "I'm Yuzuki!" She hugged Kane and kissed her cheek.

Kane blinked. "You're a lot nicer than he is."

"A lot of people say that," nodded Yuzuki seriously. "I'm just here gathering some special pigments, but I'm done now. I'll take you back to my place. Medusa has ths thing where she turns people into statues." She smiled brightly. "I just make statues of people I like!"

Kane smiled and talked and chatted with Yuzuki all the way to the Kaiba mansion, without a care as to why she was even going. This girl was lovely. There were very few Dream Valley ponies she got along with as well as she did with this Yuzuki. She was lead right up to Akane's room where Yuzuki knocked and entered.

"As long as he's not naked I think it's okay," she said. "And he's not even here. Oh well!" She started puttering around the room, stripping the sheets matter-of-factly and tidying up the clothes, still chattering along with Kane about her hobbies. Akane came home around eight o'clock to find his sister having a light dinner with Kane by candlelight polishing his table.

"Akane!" cried Yuzuki as though seeing him was a great treat and surprise and she wasn't sitting in his room. She kissed his cheek.

Kane waved. "Hi."

Akane plucked the rag out of Yuzuki's hand. "You're cleaning again," he said.

"Well your room is a pigsty again." she said happily. "I can't have you living in sheets slept in for a month! I found some interesting stains there too..."

Akane made an odd choking noise. "Don't change my sheets any more."

"I will stop as soon as you start." She sat back down and finished her last bit of dinner. "I'll finish this later. Kane, it was great to meet you, please come down any time!"

Kane smiled nervously. "Sure! And you can come down if you like!"

Yuzuki glanced up at Akane uncertainly and he looked away. "That's not a good idea," he said. "Night, Yuzuki." She kissed his cheek and left with the empty plates.

"Hi," said Kane."

Akane shoved the rag into a corner of a cabinet. "So why are you here?" he snapped. He was quite tired. God knew what he'd done all day. Very nice drug haze, though. Oooh.

"I saw my dad today," said Kane sullenly. "And I couldn't tell him."

Akane pursed his lips. "So?"

"I mean," said Kane, "is it my place? I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with what you've told me... What would you do?"

Akane considered. "I'd poke him in the spine and wave a runt in front of him and say 'Look, I found hellspawn' and he'd tell me to bugger off with it and do what I wanted." He surveyed the forlorn lass in front of him. "My dad's pretty loose. And that wasn't what you needed to hear. Why don't you talk about this shi-stuff..." Gotta keep the good guy persona here or I'll miss out on the fun. "This stuff with Yuzuki? She's... nice about that kind of stuff."

Kane stood up, sniffing back tears and a runny nose. "That's right, okay, I'm sorry I even came, I didn't mean to bother you." She bolted out the door.

Akane closed the door behind her and blew out half the candles before curling up under his nice clean... unstained... yeugh... I must learn to change these... sheets.

Akane dragged himself up the embankment of a salty stream. His left arm felt like it wasn't there. Oh. Crap. Well... it was there. Broken as hell, but there. He clawed his way out of the water and into the shelter of the trees. He was shivering. It was really cold. You'd have thought it might be warmer, but no, not even a summer night in Nightmare Valley.

He groaned and wrapped his sodden coat around himself, preparing to trudge off to see that Heketoro bloke. He never asked any questions.

Akane set off, cursing his bad luck at gambling and swearing not to game again with corpses. Not such high stakes anyway. He snickered and shivered, his teeth chattering. Damn dirty players. Oh well. He'd get them back tomorrow.

He stumbled and nearly fell, jarring his arm. Crap. Maybe the day after tomorrow. Or next week. Soon enough.

He travelled to the village. It was shorter to walk through, though more conspicuous, but it would be longer and more... painful to take a detour.

Unfortunately he was only a third of the way down the high street when-

"Yellow-Eyes?"

Akane sighed and turned to Kane as she yanked her front door open and dashed out to him. "Princess. What a unexpected surprise. I habe to be going now but I'd be glad to take this conversation up... later."

Kanr frowned. "You look horrible. Come inside and get warm." She reached for his left arm.

Akane twitched himself out of her reach. "Not that arm... I was just going to see Heketoro, so if you'll let me..."

"Come inside, and I'll call Heketoro in." SHe went behind him and shoved him in the direction of her front door. "No excuses!" She closed the door securely behind her.

Akane felt much warmer inside. The place was tiny. There were two doors- he assumed a bedroom and a bathroom- and a lovely warm fire. There was a seat before it with some papers and some darning. "You prefer to stitch up your shirts than buy more?" he asked.

Kane scraped the papers into a pile with her sewing and dropped them on the table. "When you have something good, why change. Go on, sit down." She peeled his coat off and left it to warm up.

Akane sagged into the chair. His hair began to melt over his face. "Not for nothing, Princess," he said before a coughing fit jarred him over. "Ugh... Princess I just might need to go and see Heketoro."

Kane pursed her lips and made him a hot drink of tea. "Drink it while I call him. Try and relax."

Akane took the tea with his right hand and tipped the whole scalding thing down his throat. "Good stuff," he said in a raw voice.

"Try and go to sleep," said Kane, taking his mug away. She took her telephone into her bedroom to make the call to Heketoro."

Akane felt his arm defrosting. It felt nice, this moment before the agonising pain arrived. A pity his pants were still wet. He kicked off his boots and wiggled his toes. "Ahhh." He wondered if there was any more tea. He wouldn't have said no to a large brandy, either. Or maybe some biscuits...

Akane woke up in the late morning, still in his armchair. He was facing a burned-out fire and a blanket was draped over him. He had a wicked cink in his back. He stood up and stretched. Only then did he realise his arm was moving and without pain. "Look at that," he said quietly. "I don't even remember..."

"Heketoro arrived after you passed out," explained Kane, towelling her hair.

"And he fixed me? That was good of him." He looked around for his coat.

"Well you can't leave yet," said Kane shortly. She tossed a pile of clothes at him. "Get changed. It's still light out."

Aane looked at what she had given him. "Sweatpants," he looked at her seriously. "Really?"

"Yes," said Kane in a low voice. "Now get it on and get in bed or I will toss you out naked into the street."

Akane blinked and then grinned wolfishly. "Princess grew a pair."

"I've always had a pair," she said in response, flicking her hair. She glared at him. "You heard me."

Akane yanked his shirt off over his head and touched his tousled forlock. "Yes, Ma'am." He winked at her and went into her room. He left the door ajar. "Are you joining me?"

"No," said Kane.

"Door is still open for you..."

Kane slammed the door.

"Metaphorically."

"Quiet!" Kane shucked her towel and went to the kitchen sink to start the washing up. She sighed and felt her muscles relax in the hot soapy water.

Akane slid his arms around Kane and slid his lips along her chin to her ear, having slipped out the door. He had rejected the jumper she had offered him, wearing only the pants. "If you don't want to come in, I can come out."

Kane squeaked and splattered him with soapsuds. "What is wrong with you?" she asked, blushing furiously as she wriggled out of his grasp.

Akane flipped his hair to get the bubbles out. "Just thanks for administering me last night..."

"What's wrong with saying 'Thanks'?"

"Has no flair," he leaned against the sink. He turned and started washing up his mug.

"I thought you hated cleaning," said Kane quietly.

"I don't like leaving unpaid debts."

Kane frowned. "How did you get in that condition last night?"

"I had a disagreement with a fiend or two."

Kane blinked, her eyes wide. "So they beat you up?"

"More or less."

"That is so messed up!"

Akane smirked. "Then why won't you give us a kiss better?"

"Because you're already better," scowled Kane, very very tempted.

"What if I promise you'll like it?"

"That doesn't mean I should," she said stoutly. SHe sat down in his chair and picked up her papers.

"Your loss."

Kane clenched her fists and ignored him.

"You know, it's not often that I'm roped into staying in for dinner," said Akane, glancing at his sister over his glass.

"Well our guest is someone worse staying in for!" said Yuzuki, patting Kane's leg. "We're so happy to have you!"

Kane siled and swallowed her mashed potato. "Thanks, Yuzuki, but it's really your cooking I come to see. Delicious."

Yuzuki grinned. "You're so sweet! I can't believe my brother hasn't gotten you drunk and had his way with you yet!"

Akane took another drink of his whiskey. "Not for lack of trying."

Kane was mortified, choking on her own inhalation.

Yuzuki giggled. "You're top class, Kane. Always good value."

Akane slapped Kane on the back as she gasped. "You right there?"

Kane coughed and finally caught a breath. "Ahh. Yes." She leaned back on her chair and sighed.

"Don't die there, Princess."

"I won't."

Yuzuki smiled and sighed. "You're so cute together."

"Are you done with your infernal matchmaking?" asked Akane benignly.

"Please keep me out of it," said Kane quietly.

"Oh but it's so much fun!" She put her cutlery together and stood up. "I'll go get desert!"

"What's for desert?" asked Kane.

"I hope something I can smear on you and lick off," he said heavily but with complete seriousness.

Kane blanched. "You're repulsive."

"Fine, if you want to lick it off me..."

Kane started choking again.

Yuzuki opened the door at that moment. "Strawberry and chocolate mousse!"

"So," said Akane quietly, "definitely something I can lick off you."

Kane quickly shovelled some mousse into her mouth so she wouldn't have to reply.

Yuzuki spooned up some mousse and closed her eyes to taste it. "Mmm. Try some, Akane."

"I'll save mine," he said rakishly.

Kane bolted hers down and grabbed his bowl so he could not use it against her.

Yuzuki blinked. "Well... yay I'm glad you like it Kane!"

"Mmmhmm!" said Kane with her mouth full.

"I hope you intend to reimburse me," muttered Akane.

"Wa ih bahkh?" Asked Kane, trying not to spray the table with mousse.

Akane looked at her, deciding. Then he reached over and drew her into a kiss, slipping his tongue into her mouth.

Kane pushed him off and swallowed her mousse. "Oh my gosh! In front of your sister!" She wiped her mouth with a shaking hand.

Akane leaned back with a self-satisfied look on his face. "Good desert, Yuzuki."

"You're... welcome..." said Yuzuki faintly. "Well I.. I'm tired. I think I'll go to bed now..." She kissed Kane on the cheek and hugged Akane. "Goodnight..." She all but bolted to the door.

"What was all that about?" asked Kane with confusion.

"We made her uncomfortable."

"I didn't think that was possible! Wow I feel bad..."

"Don't, she'll be fine tomorrow." He stole his bowl back and finished his mousse. "She like you, you know."

"I like her, too, said Kane. "I've never known anyone so... unique."

Akane pulled her chair over to him. "And I think she wanted us to have a private chat."

Kane tried to sidle away. "Isn't one stolen kiss enough? You even," she shuddered. She didn't want to say 'tongue'.

Akane smirked. "I'm not after a kiss..." He pushed back his chair and tugged Kane onto his lap, laying his head on her shoulder. "I love the smell of your hair. In your house it was so strong."

Kane held her fingers to her mouth and then wrapped her arms around him. "I hope you're not going to rip my heart out."

"What would I do with a thing like your heart?" he asked, closing his eyes. "I'd only get it dirty."

"Then promise you won't dally with me."

"I thought we were just dallying."

Kane frowned. "I just wish I knew if you were serious."

"You'll know if I do... I won't string you along. Is that good enough?"

"No." Kane pushed him away.

Akane blinked and wobbled. "Kane, I... Don't think I can give you what you want. It's not in my nature. I'm not reliable."

Kane rubbed her hands together. "Doesn't that mean you don't respect anyone but yourself?"

"Princess, I could not respect you more. But I have never met anyone I felt the same about."

"Will you love me?" asked Kane quietly.

Akane paused. He swallowed. "I think you would be a better judge of that."

Kane frowned and sighed with resignation. Then she turned, grabbed his face and planted a kiss.

Akane paused in shock before returning the kiss. He dug his hands beneath her and picked her up. He walked with her over to his bed and dropped her down, stripping off his coat.

Kane gripped his shirt and tugged him down onto the bed with her.
