Burning bridges...

He couldn't bring himself to ask those small, stupid questions. 'Is he going to be all right?', 'What happened?', 'Has it ever... happened before?' No. None of that. He approached cautiously, unsure of whether intrusion was appropriate and giving Vain as much room as he needed to tell him that Skittles' needed solitude, should that be the case.

No, this hadn't been nearly as fun as having to chase Skittles all about the town and dig him out from under a sofa or something. And Vain was onto him too. Oh well. Not like he really wanted to hide it, anyway. Rob was going to beat himself up about it either way, and the longer he was guilt-tripping, the longer Marks didn't have to deal with him.

"It's alright Alex, he's not going to go ape s**t on you. Skittles will not mind you approaching him; actually he might feel better if you didn't shy away from him." Vain smiled. "He doesn't do this often." He pushed a wayward piece of hair from the fox's face.

Skittles blinked at Alex, and bit his lip as Alex approached him. He lowered his eyes and flexed his toes in to Vain's side. "I..sorry." he said in a tiny little voice.

"I wasn't afraid of--" Alex broke off, feeling a little put-out. Coming close enough to reach out and touch a lightly gold ear, a small smile creeped across his lips, "Didn't you tell me not to do that?" he asked, low and soft.

Skittles perked up looking at Alex and blushed softly. "I..so I did." He finally said giving a small little smile. He rubbed his fist over his cheeks smearing the trails. "Is Peregrine gone?" He asked, glancing around.

"I think we managed to scare him off, yes," Alex laughed lightly, tugging at a stray strand of hair near his eyes. "Please don't take that personally. He's never taken very quickly to anything out of the norm..."

"Most people don't, Vain saids it's a survial instint to be wary of the unusual. Something about living long.." Skittles eyes closed and he muttered something falling asleep.

"And he's out. Just like clockwork," Vain said and hmmed. "So that was his promblem? He hates himself?" IT made sense to the demon at least.

"Did you not notice the stick up his a**? Sorta resembled a tree from my angle. Maybe you didn't get close enough," Marks commented from ahead, neglecting to turn around and address anyone directly.

Alex made a face at Marks' back, feeling better resorting to childish means than descending into 'Oh-God-what-do-I-do-with-him?' land. Again. "I wouldn't really call it a problem..." That's his brother's job, "He's just..." Difficult. Uncompromising. "Hard to get along with... at first."

Or later, for that matter. Because he had reached an equilibrium with Peregrine. But then he'd died, and become the sort of thing that Peregrine just wouldn't tolerate. Not that Alex really blamed him...

"I believe you ment, he's hard to get along with at all. I have a feeling he's more then confused about be carelessly resurrected here. It must be hard to become something you loath," he gave a warm chuckle. "Even if you look like some soft of angel. To suddenly be evolved with out prior knowledge."

He admitted it had been a shock at first, but he had gotten over it in the first couple of hours. Sure he now had wings, tails, and some sort of appendages growing from his skull…they where alive and that what counted. Besides, in barest suggestion of flight was intriguing. As soon as Skittles was settled he would practice, speaking of Skittles though.

Vain closed his eyes. "Marks, didn't you say the fountain was near? Or where you to busy studying Peregrine rear?” A small smile curled on his face, purple gray eyes dancing with laughter. “See something you like?”

Vain had probably hit Bull's Eye right there. Peregrine... the change... From what he'd heard from Kingsley, from what he'd experienced - if briefly - himself, Peregrine had not taken kindly to the knowledge of the darker, supernatural world. And he had lashed out against it by joining forces with Pentex, an international industrial development company that doubled as an icon and bastion of the Hunters of the world. Pentex itself specialized in the destruction of lycanthropes, Peregrine... vampires. Admittedly, the younger Kingsley had probably never set out to destroy a vampire personally, but the sentiment was the same and the sentiment was strong, vicious... Explicable, yes, but dangerous.

"We... got along for a while..." Alex shrugged uncomfortably, painfully aware of his wings just at the moment. No, Peregrine couldn't be pleased... "
Should go talk to him..." he muttered under his breath.

"Ahaha," Marks laughed dryly, baring his teeth at Vain. "Yes, he's just my type. All bite, no mark," he said, voice devoid of inflection. With a roll of his eyes and a gesture, he pointed down a side street. "Seek and ye shall find. Hope no one's been pissing in this oasis."

There was indeed a fountain at the end of the slightly narrower street. One of those tiered, sprinkling affairs with a pool at the bottom, ringed in by aged, three foot alabaster carving.

The demon gave the same warning smile, baring his teeth in a wolf grin. "I think they would be arrest. It is public."

Vain walked to the fountain, looking into the water nodding at the purity of the water. He settled Skittles down on the edge of the alabaster carving, dipped his fingers in the cool wetness and began to clean up the fox's small face.

"Alex, would you know a safe place for us to bunk for awhile? I think we both would appreciated a change from staying in the woods." Nothing against the wilderness, so strange then the sands and beautiful in its eeriness. "Some place with a tree house..."

Skittles always wanted a tree house, the youngster pleading with him with those large red eyes and a eager grin. Perhaps, it was time to get him one.

"Arrested? Ha. Is there any law enforcement around here? You tell me," Marks rolled his eyes and sat on the stone ring of the fountain. As far as he was concerned, the local police force - if it existed - wasn't very intelligent. Because hell, they hadn't caught him yet. And they hadn't done anything to half the people he'd met. 'sides, what was the point of having a common law enforcement when there were all these weird little mini-governments, tribes and other such stuff organizing itself all over the place? It was like being back in Italy, and there was a reason he'd left Italy.

Admittedly, it hadn't had anything to do with the police. It was, if anything, a bonus for Marks if they weren't around to bother him. But it did take the fun out of a couple things.

Some place safe? Oh, he knew there was a reason he was supposed to be out and about... Looking for things, for better... well, no, the Townhouse was nice enough. But he didn't know how safe it was anymore... Which was one of the reasons they'd had to get Asteil out, somewhere no one else would know... where Oliver could look after him until they figured something better.

"I..." he said, unsure why he spoke if he had no actual suggestions, "Suppose you could come to the Townhouse, with us..." All right. Maybe he did. It wasn't particularly well thought out - but it was only for a while, right? Surely no one would mind.

"What? Why?" Marks snapped irritably. He didn't want to spend any more time with these two than he absolutely had to - things just hadn't gone the way he wanted when they were around.

Okay. Maybe someone minded.

"While it may not be noticeable there is always some sort of law. May it be gang bosses pulling strings in the underground or politics someone judges, forgives or condemns. We are laws in ourselves." Vain tilted his head back, watching Marks though his side vision. "There is more ways to arrest someone then in chains and irons."

His attention flickered back to Skittles as the fox moved, a warm rumbling hum sounding came from his lips in a slow but clear tune close to something from Arabian nights. His eyes where clouded, the gray swamping purple as storm of half suggested idea connected and merged into one clear burst of light. "A town house?"

Well, he could handle Marks. He had an idea where such irritability stem from and a half assed planned motion to use it in his favor. Just, he had to find somewhere for Skittles to go. "Alex? Could you come and retrieve Skittles? I need to have a private conversation with Marks with out prying little ears."

Skittles seemed to enjoy Alex's company and he sensed no threat in the other. His soul scent was clean perhaps a little morose, but he was accounting that to the years he spent as an unwilling creature that thirst for blood.

"Touche," Marks muttered reluctantly. Arrest might not be the word he would've chosen, but it got the point across. Still, the worst he'd seen around Gaia had been general lack of sense recently. Maybe he was just on the wrong side of town.

Instead of responding in the affirmative, Alex simply moved forward to support Skittles. To Vain's proposition of conversation with Marks, he had a variety of things to say - none of them helpful and the general gist of them being a sardonic 'If you think it would help...' Therefore, he would remain silent and look after Skittles. It was nice to be helpful.

Marks stood and stretched with a bored yawn, raising an eyebrow at Vain and sweeping a hand in a general away direction, "Ladies first."

He just gave a small grin at Alex as the bird supported the fox. Kitten took to the other, trying to snuggle against Alex. He wouldn't have to worry about him waking up frightened.

Vain laughed, deep and rumbling. "Shall I drop my pants and prove I am not?" He questioned. "Come along now." He walked over to Marks, swinging an arm across the others shoulder. "I think you make a much more attractive girl then I ever would. Shall we compromise and set off together?"

"Methinks the lady doth protest too much," Marks said dryly, with a shrug aimed to get Vain off of his shoulders - but if it didn't, oh well. He wasn't that averse to contact, just a little twitchy about this guy. Still, Vain seemed more like the type to come at you from the front if he really wanted to get you, not sidle up and stick a dagger in your side.

Then again, if he was the sneaky type, he wouldn't know, would he? Bloody--paranoid idiot. "What's up?"
