Jess waved her hand dismissively. "No...no I don't want her to worry. Just..." She looked around at the room. Most people seemed occupied. "You come with me."

Peter nodded. This seemed reasonable. "Alright," he said, taking her hand and discretely making his way up the stairs slowly. "Is she kicking hard?" he asked quietly.

Jess nodded, climbing the stairs as quickly as she could. "Really hard. It's starting to hurt a little." She entered the bedroom and laid down on the bed, rubbing her giant stomach as she felt another wave of pain. "Ow, ow, ow..."

"It's never bothered you this much before, has it?" he asked, swallowing. He didn't know what to do. At all. He had absolutely no clue. Was there some sort of medicine for this...thing? "Jess, I really think I should call Mum..."

Jess looked at him nervously, looking on the verge of tears. "Maybe. I don't know. It hurts so much."

Peter nodded. "Just...just wait. I'll be right back," he told her, nodding pointlessly and darting out the door and into the courtyard.

Desiree looked up from her plate as Peter rushed by to find his mother. "Wonder what's going on with him."

Ray shrugged, and picked at his salad some more. "I've no idea."
In a minute or so, Evelyn found herself dragged to the top of the stairs. "Now, really, Peter..." she began, before being thrust into the bedroom. She frowned immediately. "Jess? Dear, what's wrong?" she asked, concerned.

By this point, Jess was sitting up again against the headboard of the bed. She had tears rolling down her cheeks and she was gripping onto her stomach, unable to really speak.

Evelyn put her hands in Jess's. "Squeeze them as much as it hurts," she ordered, looking back at Peter. "Get some tea. Something relaxing. Ask one of your aunts if you don't know."

Jess took her hand weakly, feeling extremely drained. When she felt another surge of pain, it woke her up some, causing her to squeeze her mother in law's hand rather tightly.

When Peter returned with tea, Evelyn sent him away again for a warm towel. And when he brought that, she sent him away for no reason. "Poor dear," she murmered, pressing tentatively at the base of Jess's neck. Her neck was absolutely full of knots.

Jess sounded like a hurt puppy with her whimpering. She held the tea in her hands but didn't drink any as she tried to concentrate on feeling the warm towel and not the waves of pain her baby was causing her.

"Drink up," ordered Evelyn, as kindly as she could. "Now, Jess. You have nothing to be worried about. You'll be with us, and we'll take care of you. You're married, and you have a husband who loves you more than possible." She wasn't sure how effective this would be, but thought it was at least worth a try.

Jess tried to take a sip but her hand was halted with another intense cramp. "I'm not in labor am I?" She was a little afraid that these feelings were getting consistent with contractions, even though it was months too soon.
