"Jess, I love you. Don't get me wrong. But I don't know that I'm ready for this yet. I thought I was, but now...I just don't know." Peter looked absolutely defeated now, and he even stopped tugging at his ring. "I'm sorry."

Jess dropped her gaze to the piles of coins she had laid out in front of her. She thought for a moment, feeling rather upset, before she got up and walked out the door, keeping her head down so as not to make eye contact with him.

Evelyn, who was stitching, saw Jess pass the doorway. "Jess! Could you come in here a moment?" she asked absently, still stitching.

Jess stopped short, glancing into the doorway and leaning against it for support. "Yes?" She was sort of on a hormone fueled mission and didn't want to forget about it.

"Michael said he'd deposit the money as soon as you were done counting it, so you can go ahead and tell him when you're finished." She looked up momentarily. "Have you finished?"

Jess nodded, yawning as she tried to stand up striahgt despite her skewed center of gravity. "Just now. I forget the exact numbers, but I wrote them down."

Evelyn nodded absently. "Alright. Give them to Michael when he comes in." She set down her stitching now and got up. "Are you busy?"

Evelyn looked concerned now. Peter didn't get nerves. Never. The boy was too innocently callous to get stressed about...well, anything. "Peter? What happened to him?"

"I wish I knew." Jess entered the room and took a seat on the bed, to get off her feet for a bit. "He seems so nervous and he can't even bear to look at me. I...I think he regrets marrying me."

Evelyn frowned deeply. "No, no, Jess," she said, shaking her head and taking a seat next to her daughter-in-law. "I really do doubt that. Perhaps he's just a little anxious about your baby," she suggested gently. A small part of her brain told her that, unfortunately, the marriage would fall apart. But no. Peter was too sweet a boy to let that happen.
