"Then I do not know my son at all," she promised. "And I do pride myself on knowing him rather well."

Jess sighed, feeling slighty guilty as she felt Gwen starting to thump against her. Poor thing having to deal with her mother's emotional instability. "I hope so."

Evelyn kissed her on top of the head. "You can be sure of it. Just give Michael the money once he comes home, hm?" But her thoughts were far from her husband and the money. She needed patch up this marriage, quickly, before it spoiled.

Jess nodded, holding onto Evelyn. "I'm sorry for this. It isn't right to cry over what we can't control. We have to deal with it and forget and move on." It was a doctrine that had been pounded into her head since she was a tiny child.

"I should think that it is only natural to cry over it," Evelyn said mildly. "I wouldn't blame you for it, Jess."

Jess sniffled and tried to calm down her daughter by rubbing her stomach. "No...no...it's a sign of weakness. I was told never to cry unless I was being dismembered or somethign of the sort."

Evelyn looked uncomfortable. This was another parent's territory. But, then again, Jess was really more like her own daughter now than she ever was to her own parents. "Well, you were told wrong."

Jess pulled away and looked up at her tearfully. "My dad would probably throw you out the window if you told him that."

OOC: Look up the word 'defenestrate'. Right now.
Evelyn laughed. "I'll be sure not to say anything in front of him," she told Jess, smiling and feeling as though the worst part of the storm had passed.

((haha! i was actually going to say defenestrate, but i think that word is too big for jess's vocabulary))
"It doesn't matter..." Jess shrugged, dabbing at her eyes and taking in a sharp breath as Gwen kicked her hard in the ribs. "You won't meet anyway. They've officially disowned me."

OOC: My favorite word. EVAH.
"They do seem like delightful people," Evelyn said dryly. She was about to say something, when a very abashed looking Peter appeared in the doorway.
"Er...could I have a...word?" he asked, looking pointedly away from Jess's tearstains.

Jess sighed and got up from the bed, feeling a little dizzy from everything. She followed Peter back up to their room, keeping her eyes down.

Peter had to force himself to keep his hand off of his ring. He felt so unsteady right now. And now, he realized that he didn't really know what to say.
