Jess took a seat on the bed, aking sure not to disturb the piles ofo money on the mattress. She picked up a sickle and absentmindedly fiddled with it a little, not wanting to speak.

"I just need some time to think," Peter said finally, sighing. He wasn't sure what else to say. He looked up worriedly at Jess. "I don't want you to read into it, though. I just need to think. It doesn't have anything to do with you...or Gwen."

Jess shrugged, placing her hand absentmindedly on her stomach as he mentioned their daughter. "Well you shouldn't be too worried about that. You can always go back to school tomorrow anyway." She looked up at him, finally gaining back some of her nonchalance. "I can always send you an owl when Gwen is on her way is you want tobe there."

Peter nodded. "Okay." He was more familiar with aloof Jess, and thus more comfortable. "I would like to be there. Yeah. Thanks."

Jess nodded, taking Peter's hand and trying to get him to sit next to her. "We'll be alright, won't we?" She looked up at him curiously, as if his answer held a good deal of weight.

Peter took a seat without any reluctance. "I think so," he said, hesitantly putting an arm around Jess's shoulder. Even if they didn't work out, he should at least wait until Gwin was born to say something.

Jess leaned her head on his chest, closing her eyes as she felt Gwen kicking around. "She's all excited now. I think she's trying to tell us that she wants us to be a happy family."

Peter didn't say anything. He couldn't help but think that maybe it was more Jess's feelings that Gwen's. "I'll try not to be so distant anymore," he said at last, not wanting to talk about this anymore.

Jess frowned a bit but tried her best not to show it. She simply nodded, lifting her head up and looking at the piles of coins still. "Can you give those to your father when he gets home? I have the amounts written down."

Peter nodded. "Sure. Can we put them all into a bag or do they need to be in seperate piles?" he asked, as though he were genuinely interested in the stupid coins.

Jess shrugged. "Makes no difference to me. I was just doing it for counting purposes." She was not really a happy camper at the moment. She was achy, heavy, tired, stressed, and royally pissed off that she was the one clinging to Peter and not the other way around.

Peter seemed to think that it was the end of the conversation. "Okay." He took a spare bag and dumped the coins in, fistful by fistful. "I'll give these to Dad." He took his trunk out from under the bed and started to fold some of his robes, unsure of what to say to Jess.

Sighing quietly, Jess put her feet up on the bed and leaned back onto the pillows. She ran her hand up and down her stomach lightly, feeling Gwen pushing back against her. For a moment she felt extrememly sad for no apparent reason, but forced herself not to show it.

The next day, Peter found himself awkwardly looking at Jess. His trunk was in the compartment, and he had finished saying goodbye to his parents. "Write me when you can," he said feebly, looking back over his shoulder at the train.

Jess had her eyes kept low, trying not to be seen by other students crossing into the platform. "I will..." She sighed as she heard two girls pass by, whispering (none too quietly) "She's huge!" and giggling. She looked up at Peter, about to open her mouth when she heard a piercing scream from inside one of the tarin compartments.
"Someone come quick!" Desiree threw open the window of the compartment she and Ray had just entered, looking ghostly white. "It's...It's Professor McGonagall. I think she's dead!"
