Evelyn shook her head. "I just don't know what to do, Michael. Jess spends her entire day sketching and talking to her owl. And if Peter goes on behaving this way, and Jess and I spend the whole day taking care of the baby on our own...that won't work out. It won't work out at all."

"I know it won't." Michael stood up, pacing the floor with his hands behind his back. "I mean, what if we tried to talk to the Winsrows? They have more than enough money to let Peter reduce his workload."

Evelyn sighed. "It's not about his workload, Michael. You know that. If anything, he's relieved that he has such a valid excuse for staying away from home. And I would rather tell Jess that Peter is still at work rather than saying that he's...who knows where."

Michael sighed, leaning against the table. "Yeah, I know Evey, but what are we going to do? Force him to be attentive to Jess and stress him out even more?"

Evelyn ran a hand through her hair. "I have no idea," she muttered. "Absolutely none."
Just then, Peter came in, looking more like a zombie than anything else. He set down his bag, mumbled a greeting, and opened the pantry for some food.

Michael switched his attention to the door as his weary looking son entered. "Peter, sit down. You're mother kept dinner warm in the oven for you." He grabbed the plate of chicken for him and set it down on the table, glancing at his wife momentarily.

"Thank you," Peter mumbled, sinking into the seat and beginning to shovel food into his mouth.
Evelyn caught her husband's glance and looked helplessly at her son. "Wouldn't you like to go tell Jess you're home?"
Peter shook his head dismissively. "She'll find out soon enough."

Michael sighed, sitting next to him and sliding the plate of food away from his son. "Go tell your wife that you're home. I'm sure that unlike you she's been rather lonely." He knew this of course, because everytime he passed by the bedroom he heard the girl telling her owl how she missed Peter and wished he wasn't so distant.

Peter raised his eyebrows, but he was too tired to argue. He lifted himself up and started up the stairs, opening the door reluctantly. "Hi. I'm home."

Jess looked up from her drawing, the opening door causing Darts to flutter off the bed and perch atop Peter's shoulder. Jess smiled and waved him over. "How was work?"

Peter shuffled towards the bed. "It was fine." He knew that his parents would just send him up the stairs again if he left again, and he sighed. "How're you feeling?"

Jess frowned, setting aside her drawing. "I'm fine. I've just been mostly worried about you all day." She sat up straight, taking his hand and leaning over to kiss him on the cheek. "You look like a zombie, Peter. I'm getting nervous." She pouted a little, running her thumb along the back of his hand. "You won't talk to me anymore. You don't say you love me, you won't even look at my stomach any more and-Peter!" She caught him trying to glance away as if getting ready to leave. "See? this is what I mean. You keep saying you're fine, everything's fine, but you're obviously lying. What's wrong? Come on, things won't get better if you ignore them."

"I'm talking to you now, aren't I?" asked Peter irritably. He snatched his hand away. "I've just been busy, that's all. Preoccupied. I'm hungry," he said flatly, turning away. "You should get rest. Night, Jess." And with that, he jabbed his wand at the lights, turning them off, and shut the door behind him.

But Jess was not going to give up that easily. Forcing herself out of bed, she turned the lights back on and followed Peter out of the room, grabbing him by the shoulder. "Listen here, Peter! You're going stop with this bloody act right now and tell me what your problem is!" She narrowed her eyes, feeling extremely on edge.

Peter glared. "You know what my bloody problem is, Jess! Frankly, I think I'm doing a pretty damn good job right now, and it's the best that I can manage! The blokes that work with me can stay as long as they need to, because they don't have a wife to nag them, and parents to fuss over them, and a bleeding baby to complicate things. And I should be one of them!"
