Nodding briefly to let the Weyrlingmaster know he'd heard, Alambri- A'bri, he supposed, now- led Varth over to the food, as far away from the Queen as he could. Varth was hissing, now, a low irritated sound, but A'bri ran his hands over Varth's neck, still whispering soothing words. He definitely didn't want his baby getting into another conflict with the Queen- he couldn't win, and it would only distress them both.

At his silent concerns, Varth snorted and glared. Clearly, he didn't feel the same, but A'bri had no desire to let him figure out for himself that the Gold would simply force his compliance however it was Golds did that.

"Don't worry about her," he insisted, stopping at the table to look over the meat. He glanced back over his shoulder, making sure that the Gold's new rider had her in hand as well. There was plenty of food, of course, but with as much tension was between the two dragonets, A'bri was sure they wouldn't care.

:Mine, I want the best food. I don't want to share, I want all the best food!

"Yes, yes. Only the best for you." He picked up a large bit of meat, checking it over to make sure it had enough fat to be flavorful, and handed it to Varth, who snatched it quickly, glaring in the direction of the Gold. He swallowed it down quickly, and A'bri handed him another, trying to keep him distracted by the food. "Here, here's more. You can have as much as you need. I promise, you'll get all you need."

SHARDS.

SHARDS SHARDS SHARDS SHARDS SHARDS.

La arrived on the scene far too late, hauling a kit of medical supplies and bewildered beyond all reason, nearly skidding into a Candidate with barely a word. THINGS HAD HAPPENED AND SHE NEEDED TO FIND CORDEL. NOW. “Shardit!” she hissed, and her eyes fell over the crowd as she realized precisely what was going on. “Scorch me now,” she muttered, taking a deep breath and assessing the situation. All she knew at this point was that there were two dragons (was that the Queen? It must be; that size didn’t make sense for anything else) with Riders, an egg was rocking, and clearly there had been some major damage control that she’d missed.

Isonth…La was suddenly glad that Isonth hadn’t been able to find a proper perch in view of the Sands. The poor Green would start panicking soon enough.

“Cordel!” La called out, spotting her mentor and diving through the crowd to him, drawing up alongside as quickly as she could and all but dumping the kit at his feet. “I’m not going to ask what I missed. What do you need me to do?”

---

In spite of everything and the chaos, when Hanya finally managed to hop onto someone’s shoulders and stand tiptoe to figure out what happened, she was glad that she had decided to firmly maintain her place in the back. Shards…she couldn’t believe what had happened. Rinfala had Impressed the Queen? Good for her. Hanya was, frankly, more concerned with everything else that was going on than she was with things like that. That Queen was as dangerous as her mother, and Hanya was hopeful that Rinfala could learn to handle her instead of happy for the other girl.

“I can’t believe this,” she muttered. “Can’t believe this at all.”

---

Weylin was running so late it was shameful. He hadn’t been able to find the people to whom he was supposed to pass the children; hadn’t been able to figure out where his robe and sandals were, and had barely been able to order Speckle into submission and OFF the Sands. Oh, shardit, he was furious, and he had missed…

A lot.

Skidding onto the Sands, Weylin fell dead still and stared, his jaw dropping.

“What. The. Shards.”

---

Weylin wasn’t the only latecomer. Standing easily a head taller than nearly all the crowd, Marko ambled through the Stands with the unhurried air of someone who was completely ignorant to the world around him. Spotting Xeran and Vera without much trouble, he shook his head and gravitated toward the other Harpers. He had stopped by the kitchens to swipe a meatroll, unnoticed in the frantic mess that was preparation for a Hatching Feast. Stuffing the rest of the roll into his mouth just as he reached the pair (and a boy…Vera’s cousin? He wasn’t sure), he took a moment to chew and swallow before saying anything.

“Sorry I’m late; had something to do. What’d I miss?”

Smiling almost wickedly, Inaari watched the second girl in the group wander in a hurried daze towards her new Bonded. A queen was every girl Candidate's dream, but THIS queen? Nightmares would be associated with this girl for a long time to come. Perhaps that was appropriate, considering the entire aura around this Hatching.

Shaking her head, brown eyes lit on a familiar stocky form. He was reclining, having been mauled! "Goran!" Startled, the Hold girl scooted gracefully across the Sands, and before long was hovering over the injured young man. "Oh, did the brown get you? Oh I'm so sorry! Are you ok? You look somewhat ok to me, but still!" Wispy hair floated around them both as she flitted about him like an anxious hen.

And then suddenly, she sobered, and looked at him seriously. "Does it hurt when it happens?" As if she felt somehow guilty, or that she did something wrong, hanging back from the fray.

Balin folded his arms, staying in the same range of his brother as before. Wearily he watched the fiery gold, and barer-of-a-bad-attitude brown make their choice and if they were escorted else where right away it'd be all too soon. Impressing was important for them, but he was not so stocked in the jerk department he could just hand-wave the damage done to his fellow man away. Temperamental little things.

The attention he had focused once again on the remaining, unhatched eggs was not fated to stay there for long. A voice called to him--no, to Bachi--and he glanced Senra's way as she approached out of habit.

"Did you see all that? What a mess!" The chaos did little to effect her mood and if anything she seemed more excited than when she'd first arrived. What a nut case of a woman. Shaking his head, Balin centered again on the more important matter at hand while the banter with Bachi continued.

"I thought she was gonna kill someone. Shards, they're so mad!"

Kallista let her breath out as the two dragons finally Impressed. There had been some violent Hatchings since she met Astarteth. Even Haanyath couldn't have been as vicious as these two were... Shaking her short locks, the green rider looked to see if she could find a more comfortable spot to view the rest of the Hatching. The wall was starting to be a little wearing on her shoulder.

You should come and sit with me. Astarteth told her softly. The green was on one of the lower ledges and had a better view than her rider. Not that this Hatching is going to go by quickly. At least, I am comfortable.

Smiling softly, Kallista excused herself as she made her way up to the green. Her sweet and lovely Astarteth. Just thinking about her dragon during Impressions made her all teary eyed. It didn't take her long to get up and crawl into her green's arms. Astarteth was just the right size to make cradle of sorts for her rider.

"Even if every little one takes his or her time, I don't have to worry. I already have the best dragon out there." Kallista assured her beloved.

F'sey breathed a sigh of relief as the weyrlings followed his orders. The goldrider looked like she was having a spot of trouble, though. Making his way over to her, he called, "What's your name, kid? Make her wait for you! You have to make stand now, or your relationship will be stuck like this. Make her wait." Please, he thought, let her follow his advice. He glanced over his shoulder. The brown seemed alright, for now. His boy was keeping him under control. "You. With the brown. What's your name? Keep him just like that. That's good." Please, let them both just cool out.

The Arabian Egg was still rattling away. It trembled, no one watching. Or, perhaps that wasn't entirely correct. The new hatchling still had most of the crowd's attention, but it seemed the candidates weren't about to be taken by surprise. They were quick learners. The egg gave one final shake before a large chunk of the shell gave way and a dark nose quickly followed suit. The dragon inside gave an annoyed snort and before long, it gave a great shove, revealing a petite dragon. He was very obviously blue, and very obviously slight.

Eyes whirling orange, the dragon pulled himself free and began to wobble towards the boys, the snarl on his face quite obvious.

Kiera's eyes turned toward the rocking egg. Being close to the sands, but still near the corner, she caught sight of it's movement, while most other eyes watched the violent Queen. So many candidates here... She was beginning to lose hope. Her fourth, perhaps, failed atempt at Impressing. But she was glad to be here nonetheless. She was seeing the generations of dragons emerge and take their riders. But oh! How she wished to be able to fly someday without worry.

Come on, little one! Come out into the world! We're waiting for you~ She crowed in her mind, hoping. Just hoping for an answer. When it escaped the confines, she smiled, watching unhappy Blue head toward the boys.

Holy Shards! He had never thought something so... violent could occur on the Sands. Sure, Hatching was always emotional and quite mentally exhausting, but bloodshed?

His eyes were still quite large as the two dragonets because to go at each other, and his mouth only fell open in shock. No, this had nothing to do with whether or not there had been a Touching - this was, pure and simple, sibling rivalry at it's finest. Or worst, whichever made more sense. Part of him thought it was amusing, the two small dragons fighting like there was no tomorrow, and the other part was just plain terrified. So, somewhere in between, there was a sort of eye in the storm, where he was desperately trying to keep himself centered. Unfortunately, with all the current events, he was having a hard time doing just that.

However, it wasn't long before they had Impressed, because one girl and one boy stood forward to calm to raging dragons. He let out a brief sigh of relief. F'sey was bellowing orders to both of the newly named riders, telling the Brown off the Sands and calling the Gold over for food. Good, he thought simply. If she was anything like she had shown to be, food would definitely calm her down. He smiled at that - food always made him happy, after all.

His eyes flicked back to the eggs when yet another began to rock and shiver, the dragon beneath the shell pushing out towards the Candidates. He hadn't noticed outright, but it was one of the girls (blonde, was she?) who had made him notice at all. The Arabian, it seemed, was less anxious to show off as it's siblings, and he could only hope that meant for a calm dragon. He thought too soon, however, as the egg cracked open and a small Blue tumbled forth. As he took a step towards the boys, his face twisted into a snarl, Rumir swallowed thickly. Surly this wouldn't be a repeat of earlier? He could only hope so.

He watched the dragon watching them, and did his best not to panic.

Bachi was absolutely exalted with everything that had happened. Sure, it was a mess, but nobody had died. Not yet, anyway.

"Wasn't it awesome!?" he piped a little loudly when Senra showed up. The grin on his features was a clear show to how he felt to the whole ordeal.

He ignored his brother. He was just a stuck up worry-wort.

"I can't wait for the next one!" Senra's appearance had completely interrupted any look he might have had towards newly hatching egg. "Are they always this crazed? The brown almost ran over Balin!" Which, to him, made his brother slightly more awesome.

Not much, but slightly.

Oh goodness.. was this new little dragon going to impress to a boy? Well, she didn't mind that! It was too obviously making very..unhappy faces (if one could read the faces of a dragon)... but still, she did have to question whether or not there would be any...
...
...
More..maulings. Faranth, she didn't want to think about that! But still, maybe this impression would go along a little more peacefully to allow her to just...see how it was supposed to go. She didn't want to come out on the sands next time fearing the eggs or fearing whatever would come out of them.

Alanna needed to NOT fear -- and that's exactly what she was doing, keeping her eyes between the newly hatched blue and the clutch of still unhatched eggs.

Was the mother that bad too? She'd heard, but still actually seeing it...

Ollen thanked Faranth that she wasn't with the group of boys, that dragonet looked so agitated! The usually unshakable candidate was feeling vulnerable in nothing but thin white cloth. The last time she'd worn anything this like a dress was...well she couldn't remember and the idea of wearing something so uncomfortable and odd now kept creeping into her mind.

Movement caught her eye and she saw La, her nerves calmed some, Cordel, La, and many other healers were on the seen, certainly there wouldn't be too many more accidents, would there? The look that blue held on his face made her thing otherwise.

Miah had been lost in the crowd during the initial Hatchings, and she did not yet know how lucky she was. Nobody paid much attention to a little fourteen year old girl who was trying to get to the front. It was only the fact that she was so well-mannered that she didn't kick someone in the shin so she could see. Who decided that all of these boys should be so tall anyways? And where was Balin? Or Bachi? They had to be around here somewhere! Weaving her way through the candidates, she caught a glimpse of two empty egg shells and cursed her luck. She had missed two dragons hatching! It took all her intestinal fortitude not to stomp her feet and throw a mini temper tantrum on the Sands. She didn't have time for that. She had to find Balin!

"Balin!" She called, spotting what she thought was her friend (of convenience only) just up a head. If only all these people would get out of her way! Resorting to the only weapon in her arsenal, Miah bounced up and down to try and see, hoping that Balin would at least turn around and look at her.

Nasunda, though she had began in the delightful company of Senra, had ended up somewhere in the middle of a group of girls when the gold took a charge. Everyone had been running away and the young woman had decided, ah what the heck, why not go with the crowd on this one? They all seemed to know where they were going, after all. Still, she couldn't help but breath a small sigh of relief when the gold was out of the candidates and over in her corner eating. Nothing said dangerous hatchlings like getting tail swiped.

Once she was sure the coast was clear, she began making her way through the crowd again, but stopped when a little blue made his presence known. Aha! She had known that one was going to be a blue. But who would it go to? She knew who Sen had her bets on, but Nasunda wasn't so convinced. She tilted her chin a little higher to get a better look at the boys.

Aaand just like that, another dragonet was out.

Funny, given the previous two hatchings, Canth had rather been expecting something a little more dramatic... but at the same time, she was relieved the little blue didn't cause a stir. Now, it was just a little annoyed, and a little dainty, but didn't seem to be showing any signs of bloodlust or rivalry or any such sharding horror.

She wasn't holding her breath this time as the somewhat delicate (by comparison) creature went wobbling off towards the boys' end (... she herself had found some place to stand between the two gender groups now in what felt like a bad metaphor), and merely watched, quietly, void of the same chills as before, to see it impress.

Perhaps to a delicate lad like itself, she wondered?

So long as it found someone, all would be well in her book.

Yes, Cordel had moved quickly. A bit too quickly, unfortunately, but he wasn’t going to share that bit of information with W’ten. At least the feeling in his hands was returning now, warded off by the effects of redwort. And, of course, the Brownrider couldn’t resist a mild jab at the Healer. It was what they did, along with… with…

Actually, no. Bickering was pretty much all they did.

“You know, W’ten, I hear there are more traditional hobbies that are just as enjoyable as stalking me,” he snarked back. If anyone else other than W’ten had talked about his timing… well, he would have been sort of freaked out. But the logical Brownrider really did notice such things, without needing to stalk someone around.

Oh hey! There was La. “Just keep your eyes and ears out, La,” he said. “It looks like another egg has hatched. And judging by the crowd, I’d say it’s another angry one. Get ready with some numbweed and bandages.”
~.~

Finally, Marko showed up! Actually, Xeran wasn’t sure if he wanted Marko here now. The taller Harper would almost certainly have a panic attack if he was told what he had missed. Then again, the mental image of a flailing Marko was awfully amusing… the younger man had to consider his options very carefully, mentally weighing his desire for entertainment against his desire not to be killed in his sleep by Marko.

“Nothing much,” he said eventually, as carefully as he could. “Uh. The queen Impressed and a little Brown. Um.”

Yes. Just leave it at that, he decided. No need to let him know that one of the ex-Harpers had been mauled.

Eyes flickering between the Weyrlingmaster and Arioth, Rinfala nodded. He was right. If she let Arioth trample her now, she'd be trampled for the rest of her life. The Weyr couldn't afford that. She firmly put her hand on the gold's nose as she impatiently tried to snake her nose across the table. "No. Let me cut it. I don't want you to choke, because if you're dead you can't be better than anyone."

Harsh words, but they cut through the haze of anger as intended. With a reluctant hiss, Arioth lashed her tail against the ground, but she waited. For now. Cut it so I do not choke then.

As quickly as she could, Rinfala started cutting the meat into bite-size pieces. Smaller than her hand, right? ...On second thought, a little smaller. Arioth was a big dragonet, but a small queen.

I am big enough!
