The buck opened his mouth to protest. No, no, this was all wrong. He was supposed to be chasing with the others. If they couldn't see he could keep up now, they wouldn't know for later. What if Charlotte needed to go on hunt sometime in the future? Would he be in the party she chose then if he couldn't prove now that he wasn't just as fleet-of-foot as the others? No, of course not. He'd just have to say that to the Pearl. Sorry, pretty boy, but I really can't. I have to follow Charlotte. That was what he opened his mouth to say, his ears slightly pinned. But what came out instead, when the Pearl bleated like a scared fawn calling for its mother?

"...sure thing, pretty boy."

Oh, he really hadn't meant to say that. He offered a helpful smile and hid his vague but present disappointment.

"Let's see. They like shinies, right?" He nudged Iris's shoulderblade slightly, urging him to keep moving at a fairly steady pace. The things weren't going to stop moving, so they shouldn't either. He eyed the place where the Pearl was eyeing and squinted. He couldn't see the creatures, but if they were fond of shinies, he thought he had something that might bring them out. Slow and steady, he lowered his scorpion tail to the ground.

Rook was a little startled by the sudden appearance of more of the creatures, some of which were quite close to him -- he put a little more bound into his stride, lifting his legs high and keeping a wary eye on the growing tide of little maned... whatever they were. Still, with the growing tide of Herla beside and behind him -- and a glance across revealed Benholz flanking to the other side, completing the line of pounding hooves -- Rook felt heartened and confident, filled with a thrill that he hadn't felt in... ages.

His lungs were protesting, his legs beginning to feel heavy from the unexpected demands placed on his muscles, but he wasn't about to stop now, not with his Guardian urging him on in joyous tones (
go, my swift bird, a little farther, nearly there and then you will see) and the press of Herla closing in. Perhaps Charlotte would even see that he was more reliable than his previous actions had potentially painted him.

Seeing the little poofs appear from no where had an interesting affect on Merala. "Awwww....cuuuuuute!" Stretching her head down to their level she sniffed at a couple of the creatures. They of course, with eyes the size of dinner plates, took off into the brush.

*pause* "Wait! Don't run..." Merala, not wanting to lose these new cute friends, made her best attempt to follow them.

Err...darling, I think you're just going to scare them more. Her guardian whispered into her head.

'I know! But I can't follow them any other way...'

Uh. Well...I guess just try not to step on them.
She giggled in Merala's mind.

'Hilarious. You're hilarious' Sarcasm thick in her thoughts, she tried to follow the tiny creatures to the best of her ability, hoping she didn't step on any of them in the process.

Taz snorted. Action at last. She didn't even consider what Charlotte had been about to say, her mind immediatly jumped to the small creatures. They were... fluffy... and fast. Anything smaller than her would have an easier time in the underbrush and make better time.

She trotted at a measured pace behind the herla racing ahead in their speedy chaos. If it took only speed to catch the theives, she had already lost, no sense getting tired and lost in the attempt. But how to make the poofs more approachable?

She wasn't the only one who didn't run with the main pack. Her slower speed had brought her in sight of some other herla. One seemed to have... limbs made of metal? Taz's eyes briefly gleamed. She shook her head. No time for that now! His tail was skimming the ground. But it was no accident, his tail shone clearly, speed enhancing the gleam. What if the creatures liked shiny things? They took the stockings, they must! Perfect, that was it!

Grinning, she knew her silver and tanzinite accessories sparkled more than enought to be seen for a distance. Her cloak flew out behind her and flapped with a crack as she turned towards the golden male. Matching his speed she ran by his side. "Hi! Need some metalic help?" she asked, her grin growing with glee at being able to do something.

Well now the little creatures weren't the only ones prone to shiny things, Iris couldn't help his glee when Makaio used his golden tail to attract the creatures. His own sparkling blue eyes lit up and danced following the tail with excitement. "So pretty!" He exclaimed. With a one track mind he had completely forgotten about the chase. Only until one of the creatures circled back slithering away under the Pearl's leg. He quickly squeaked canting away mindful of his steps. He might not have liked the things but he didn't want to hurt them either.

Not long after another Herla had made her way over offering some assistance with some metals of her own. Again, Iris lit up but this time tried to keep himself in check looking to the ground for the creatures. "I have shiny things too?" Lowering his head he let his golden mane swing lazily over the ground as the jeweled accessory in his hair caught the light just right, gleaming like a beacon in the brush. His tail lowered just right allowed the pearls decorating it to also catch the light, both flickers of light a great addition to the attraction of these beasts.

The trio must've made quite the sight. There they were, looking like they were trying to be competitors to the bears' commerce, selling shiny trinkets. Makaio was certain of the fact that if Charlotte circled back around to see them that her expression would be a classic one. She might have even been upset. Oddly enough, that didn't upset makaio as much as he thought it would have. Infact, it didn't upset him at all, and he grinned despite himself when the Pearl added to the contribution that would have made any raven jealous.

"You're pretty, yourself," he commented to Iris, looking pleased at the other buck's seemingly unrivaled happiness. He nodded to Taz on his other side, head tilting slightly to the side as he glanced over what additions she made to their slowly growing collection.

"Perfect!" He showed his thanks to Taz's contribution with a slight bow of his head, and he was laughing when he bought it back up. "If this won't work, nothing will, huh?"

A shining white herla joined them in showing off, seemingly as captivated by their shimmering as Taz hoped the creatures were. She had seen him following before, but now his contribution was excellent. He was beautiful, feminine in his appearance, and glimmered brightly himself. They made a stellar trio; gold, silver, and pearl. She hoped it was enough. It had to be. Even if it wasn't, they must make quite a sight. Taz gave an extra bounce to her step from excitement. She should do this more often.

She grinned at the pearl hearla and golden buck, laughing. "You're very shiny, Pearl." she nodding at Iris, before turning to Makaio. "We can't fail!" Time enough for introductions later. She wanted to know the golden buck's name for sure. She was facinated by how he ran, loving metal, and all things mechanical. She wondered how his limbs worked, she had never thought of using metal the way he seemed to have done. Time enough for that later as well though. Now to lure some critters out of the underbrush.

The small herd of creatures sprinted forward, Charlotte and her group right at their heels. Suddenly, they began to disappear, diving down into a hole in the dirt below them. "They're burrowing!" she yelled, beginning to dig with her hooves at the soil. Laying in all her speed to dig, she almost didn't notice when the ground beneath her front hooves started to fall away. She danced back, cursing brightly under her breath. The hole was larger now, about a foreleg across, and it opened into a larger area below. "I think we may have found what we're looking for, but, by the stars, I don't know how we're going to get down there."

Involved in the frantic digging, Merala didn't notice that Charlotte had stopped right away. She only dug for a few seconds longer, but that was more than enough time for the hole to open up under her front hooves.

'Wait Merala...wha..!' shouted her guardian as the soil shifted.

"Hey!" Merala shouted as she fought to back away from the hole, but since the ground she was trying to use to lever herself was disintegrating, she did little more than flail. "Eep!" she shrieked as she slides halfway into the hole...

Like a good citizen, Shay'd been digging alongside Charlotte and Merala, scraping earth away with his catlike, clawed forefeet. As the hole opened in front of him, he stopped and stepped back, knowing he would be too heavy if the surface around the hole was thin. He let the lighter females take full control of the situation -- that is, until Merala suddenly began to fall. Without even thinking about what he was doing, the tall buck threw his head forward, seeking to lock horns with the female and save her from a hard landing. It would be awkward and fairly difficult to pull off... but no one thinks about these things in an emergency.

'Merala, flail your head backwards! Do it NOW!' her guardian screamed inside her head.

Panicked as she was, Merala actually listened to her for once and flung her head back. *crack* Merala and Shay's horns met and entangled, stopping her from tipping into the hole, but this didn't stop her hindquarters from sliding in with the rest of the dirt. "Crap!" Now Merala was basically dangling by only her and Shay's interlocked horns.

Now that she was held onto, it was easier to work through the panic, and find a solution to all their problems. "I...I think i can feel the bottom with my tail...Maybe you could lower me in a little more?

As their horns connected, the full weight of the doe jerked Shayann forward. He managed to brace his forepaws on solid ground before he could be pulled along with Merala. Eyes clenched shut, he grunted and pulled back as hard as he could. He managed to gain a few inches, but was still very much in danger of slipping or having the ground fall out from under him.

Then, after all this effort, up came the doe's voice, asking him to lower her. Fighting the urge to tilt his head and literally drop her on her behind, he managed to get a strained, "Are you sure you want to risk it?" out between his teeth. If she was wrong, he would almost definitely end up in the hole as well.

"Yes! Just trust me." Switching her tail back and forth she was almost sure she could feel the ground. "Do it! Otherwise both of us will fall in."
PostPosted: Mon Jan 12, 2009 3:51 pm

Well, there really wasn't much of a choice. With the ground so unstable, he probably wouldn't be able to pull her up by himself anyway. With a reluctant sigh, Shay prepared himself for the fall he was sure would come. He moved one paw forward just a little... then the other... then another tiny step, slowly letting Merala down.

'Now be careful Merala, you don't want to get hurt' the voice whispered in her head.

'I know that.' She fired back before turning her attention back to stretching her legs in an attempt to find the floor. Flailing her tail around some more, she felt it solidly hit something. "Oh! I think i've found the floor. Let me go...We can't have you falling in on me." Stretching some more she could almost sense the ground right under her feet.
