Aksaja was just about to reply to Sharra when a rather short cloaked figure (DAMMIT NOT MORE OF THEM) suddenly faded into view in front of him and yanked him into the fog.

Oh hell.

At least this thing was something he could fight, even though he had no idea where his pipe was at the moment. Well, whatever . . . his fists would do for now! "Stop this! It's not funny!" he snarled, running at the thing.

There is no explanation for their actions, they move quickly and efficiently, swinging forward with their weapon. The object stings upon contact, leaving your student feeling oddly even more tired.

Panting as the giant glowing ax-thing hit him, Aksaja ducked and backed up a little bit, fists raised in front of him. These little creeps were strong. He could easily recall such a hit killing some of the things that had attacked them in Christmas.

But not here apparently. This wouldn't be so easy. Still, he wasn't about to give up. "Die, you b*****d," he growled, running toward the figure again.

The lightning dragon also stumbled back a bit at the next attack, but he caught himself, moving to one side a little. He had to keep an eye on that ax . . . because if it landed a really solid hit, he could be done for here, as he really had no idea how powerful these things could be.

"Go. Away," he said, glaring. "Stop with the cheap fog tricks and the illusions and the crazy. Get off this island and LET US GO!" And he charged the thing again. This time the sparking about his fists was a little brighter, as he focused all his anger and anxieties upon taking this thing OUT.

Without warning the figure disengages and disappears back into the fog! What was that all about?

Riley gave Mandy a quick look as she spoke, and nodded gently. She didn't know the ghoul, and this was exactly why she had apologized previously, but it seemed people understood the situation. She appreciated it, and made note to get to know the ghoul better when they reached their destination. Thank you. She emitted quietly.

She was relieved to see the last of the students she had known were missing show up before they had gotten too far, as Astra hurried to catch up. She caught Sheridan's comment, and her head turned to give him an appraising look. With a fond gleam in her eye, her free hand reached over and patted Malodore's arm. I'm never alone. She responded confidently.

And then the fogged rolled in.

Riley's response to noticing the fog this time around was to simply clutch Malodore tighter. She wouldn't let it go this time. She turned her head, and kept her eyes focused on the group behind her. As they got harder to see, her steps slowed. There had to be a way to stay together when this happened - to keep the reapers from picking them off one by one and tearing them apart.

She heard Jericho scream her name, and her heart clenched. She reached out to his mind, but the fog prevented even that. She couldn't even call out to him, to tell him she was fine, and whatever he saw wasn't real..

---

She was powerless.

You got that right.

Her body froze and hardened as she heard the voice, but she knew. She knew that it was just a hallucination. She would not fall prey to this fog. Just because it somehow knew.. no. It was a hallucination. That's it.

The hallucination sighed and rolled his eyes.

Riley saw a glimmer through the fog, and her eyes focused in on it. When she walked forward, she found Malodore bent over some invisible form. She sighed with relief, dropping down in front of him.

Hey. She rested her hand on his shoulder. Whatever you're seeing, it isn't real. Look at me, Malodore.

(( Profile! ))

And then it was gone. Panting now, Aksaja let his fists drop to his sides and slumped a little, tired now and bleeding. He spun in a slow circle, squinting - trying to find the others. Trying very hard to ignore the whispers in the fog.

"Worthless, worthless . . . useless worm . . ."

"Shut up," he muttered. "Just got rid'a that b*****d . . . not useless."

Picking the direction he thought he had come from, Aksaja stumbled a few steps forward and saw Sharra's form slow coalesce from the gloom. "Sharra," he called wearily, raising a hand. He was bleeding from a couple of gashes on arms and chest, made by that ax, and the lighting dragon looked rather as if he'd like to lie down somewhere. Not that such was possible here. "One of them attacked me . . . got rid'f it though. Stupid reapers . . . " Leaning over, he moved to pick his pipe up off the ground carefully so he wouldn't fall on his face or something in front of the nergal boil.

Malodore's head jerked up, and this time it did leap away from her... then came back, its hands shaking visibly. "You... you're real? You're not going to... burst?" The feeling of blood and... bits... sliding down its face was beginning to fade away, very slowly, but there was still a coppery tang in its beak.

Still, it couldn't bring itself to touch her. Not quite.

Sharra had hardly moved more than a handful of steps, mostly just hoping that he could find someone else, before the whispers in the fog, the lingering shapes at the corners of his eyes...overtook his mind once more. He knew it wasn't real, but sometimes that knowledge alone wasn't enough to keep him on the right track of it all. Shuddering, he felt a wash of relief flow over him when Aksaja materialized from the fog once more. Ah gods...he was all right...or at least sort of all right... Those wounds hit far too close to home for the nergal's liking.

"Damn, 'Saja, what happened to you!?" He blurted out, even as the dragon began to explain. "Jack...they're just picking us off one by one..." At least they hadn't killed the other, which was a very legitimate concern by this point, though obviously there had been talk of fates worse than death. Just grand. Closing the distance betwixt them, he held out an arm to steady his friend, mostly because the dragon looked as though he might collapse at any minute. But they couldn't risk that...sitting down, moving, just standing in place...there wasn't any safe option, now was there ?

Riley's eyes betrayed a sense of hurt when Malodore leapt away from her. She knew that deep down, she was wondering the same thing - if she suddenly saw it in the fog, how could she tell it was real? Yet somewhere, deep down, she could feel her mind reaching out to it, and arriving at it's proper destination.

That had to account for something, didn't it?

I am very real. She assured Malodore, getting back up to her feet as it came closer. She took both of it's shaking hands in her own, and brought them to rest on her chest. Malodore, listen to me. These hallucinations - everyone is suffering them. They're only going to get worse. Now.. they've stopped us from reaching our goal. We can't let them control us. We.. we have to move on.

Her stomach churned with bile as she said it. She wanted to be able to save them all. But she was powerless. She was lucky she had found Malodore at all.. and she was determined to make the best of the situation.

What a crock of s**t. Andeon snorted, resting his arm on Riley's shoulder. She ignored him quite completely - after all, he was only a hallucination.

Right?

By this time, Jericho was surrounded by the bodies of the rest of his group. The scent of burnt flesh and blood was strong in the air, and everywhere he looked there were lumps of what were once his friends littered all around. They were all slaughtered.. and he couldn't do anything about it..

With his head in his hands, he covered himself with his wings, trying to shield himself from all of this.

"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." he murmured quietly.

He didn't understand why the reaper didn't just finish him off along with the rest. Everyone else was thoroughly demolished and he was still covered in Lizzy's remains.

"Tsk. You're hardly worth the effort."

"Who." Malodore's voice dried up, and it just jabbed one claw at the... the doppelganger standing next to Riley... though there were some key anatomical differences. "Who. Is that," it managed, after a moment.

Ugh, it felt like that girl's blood was sliding down the inside of its throat. The plague doctor shuddered powerfully.

Riley's hand lifted up and brushed against the side of Malodore's head in an affectionate gesture, somehow not registering his question. When she did, she froze for only a moment, but out of pure instinct her mind worked to find a reasonable explanation for Malodore's question. When she followed it's gaze, and found herself looking face to face with Andeon, she only gave her hallucination a scathing glare.

Malodore must have been seeing a hallucination of it's own in the same spot Andeon stood. That had to be it.

Who's what? She asked, though her eyes were very firmly glaring at Andeon. The male mindflayer gave her a cheeky wink. She suppressed the urge to growl, but her voice held a thick tone of venom. All I see is a piece of s**t. Andeon's eyebrows wiggled suggestively. What do you see, Malodore?
PostPosted: Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:37 pm

"I see... you. Except... except in a male body, I think. Perhaps." Malodore's voice was shaking - its usual composure had been utterly shattered, and its movements were quick and jerky, like a startled bird. "Not... not fecal matter."

It relaxed, slightly. That meant it was a hallucination, if they were seeing different things...

Riley's hands started to shake. Her confidence shattered. Her eyes slowly rolled to return to Malodore, and a terrible fear seeped into them. She felt the very real pressure on her arm fade away, as Andeon pulled away from her. Her blood turned cold, and both of her hands gripped Malodore's clothing.

You.. you see..

She felt her stomach threaten to lurch and expel it's contents.

She didn't want to look. Something told her when she looked, she would have to accept that there was a slight chance she was wrong.

Riley did not like being wrong. Especially about this.

Eventually, as if she felt him calling her to look, Riley turned her head. Andeon stood a few feet away.

Haaaaaaaaaa-, the clipped sound cut off abruptly, a cold voice that stabbed into Riley's mind like a frosted blade. It was familiar, and yet unfamiliar, as there was no more sarcasm or wit to be found in that terrible laughter. There was nothing funny about the Andeon that stood before her, only the reputable fighter she remembered from their home. No jokes to mask the deadly claws or suggestive commentary to take the edge off of the way he fell back into a battle-ready stance.

It was a ritual that was as old as the Illithid themselves, a gruesome deathmatch that separated the strong from the weak.

Riley's arms began to retreat from Malodore as her deepest fear became a reality. She would face this battle just as she had every other - even if, for some reason, it came at a terrible cost.

An odd place for the elders to choose to send you for my trial, Andeon. Riley murmured in a scathing tone. Usually we have them at home.
