((No sweat ^.^ Exams are coming here too, so I might not be able to make it on some nights as well.))
Yuki looked down at Bana in surprise. "You like seeing dead people?" She said wincing slightly. "Well, alright. They're probably all buried by now. "Why do you want to visit the dead?"
Niko looked up at her, listening to her explaination. He was very surprised by this story, but understood her reasoning. But he had been mistreated for so long it was strange to hear that someone other than Yuki cared about him. He felt a twinge of happiness. But why would he be happy, he wondered? She was exhausted, and sad, so why was he happy? But he knew why. Because she cared.
He reached up slowly, his fingertips gently touching hers. "Don't be sorry," He said quietly. "No one ever cared before..." His eyes met hers, and a small, hesitant smile appeared on his lips. "Thank you."

Irene gave a quick surprised look, then it melted into a sweet, slightly stonger smile. She wanted to hold his hand, but was too weak to go for it. But Niko's smile, even though it was small, Irene felt strength coming back. "You're welcome, and don't worry. 'Cause I'm always going to care about you."
A few seconds later, the kitchen got unusually quiet. Then followed by a, "Whew! Finished. Just one final tweak..." The old man was still in the kitchen, it would take about a minute for his final tweak.
((Finals and stuff here too! xd Thank god it'll all be over in three weeks here. Three... Long... Painful... Weeks. burning_eyes ))

His own smile strengthened slightly at her words. He looked up when he heard the old man speak from in the kitchen, then relaxed slightly. He scooted a bit closer to the bed, resting his head against the side tiredly, his hand not leaving hers. Shadows transformation had drained all his energy as well as Shadows, and if it weren't for his concern over Irene he probably would have fallen asleep already.

Irene's heart skipped a beat. Irene was then overcome by an emotion she couldn't name. It was like, she felt it before, but differently. And not for a long time. Whatever the feeling was, it caused her strength to come quicker. At first she was glad, but realised she wasn't wearing her necklace. She prepared to hold her powers in again as long as she could. Irene closed her eyes tight, but the rest of her body she kept relaxed. Then she suddenly realised that, for some reason, her powers weren't as out of wac. She opened her eyes. 'What's going on? Is it the old man's doing? Or possibly... Niko's?'
The old man walked in with a brand new necklace. It looked just like the old one, but polished and not scratched. He put it over Irene's neck. "It's okay now Irene, you're good as new. And I might also add, even better. I put a spell on your necklace. You can use your more powerful spells without as much energy."
Irene smiled and sat up a bit, making sure not to disturb Niko. She still didn't move her hand, but she did have enough energy now to hold his hand. The emotions o the old man and Niko came to her in a rush, and what she recieved made her smile. But Niko was tired. "See Niko, I'm good as new, and improved. Nothing to worry about."

"Ya, momma always said 'that the dead were better friends than the living cause they'll never eatcha' or something like that" Bana said tilting head and squinting trying to remember the exact words. "But I'm not so sure momma was right anymore. Cause you guys have so far been much better friends than the deadies I've been around before" Bana said smiling up at Yuki

Niko smiled slightly and looked up at her. "That's good to hear," He said quietly, standing up. He looked from her to the old man, wondering just who he was. He was still tired, but ignored it. He had never let his weariness from Shadows control interfere before, he wasn't about to now. "Maybe you should still stay in bed for a while though?" He suggested, not wanting her to tire herself out.
Yuki looked down at Bana in surprise, then smiled. "Well, thank you." She wondered about Bana's mother. "Bana, where's your family? Are you alone?" She asked. No child she had ever met before could talk about the dead in such a fashion, Yuki had to wonder how Bana had been raised.

Irene smiled and shook her head. "I don't know what happened, but something while I was reviving sped up the process. I couldn't sleep if I wanted to." Irene looked outside. "Although... Now that I have another necklace I know Mariah is going to try and take it. She wants my powermore than anything, but I know she'd only use it to kill innocent lives like her father did. I should go outside to make sure we're not being watched." Irene looked back at Niko and the old man and smiled. "Don't worry, I'll be fine. You should rest here though, you must be exausted after... Our journey." Irene knew the old man knew by now, but she wasn't gonna take the chance if someone was eavesdropping.
The old man smiled kindly while Irene waved and headed for the door. "Be careful child." The old man then looked at Niko. "I'm sure this boy and I will find plenty to talk about." Irene left out of earshot, then the old man spoke softly and kindly. "So, Niko, I'm sure you're wondering about now on who I am."
((That must mean... I'm post 201! blaugh ))

Niko watched as she left. "Be careful," He said, echoing the old man. At his words, he glanced over at him, then after a moments pause nodded slightly. "I won't press the question should you not wish to answer it," He said quietly.

The old man sighed. "No, it's time I told the truth. I won't be around much longer, my thousand old lifespan is coming to a close. And if I'm gone before Irene can control her powers on her own, you're going to have to help her. She seems to care for you immensly, so I'll follow her example and trust you. Because otherwise, she could die and it would be all my fault."

"Well, I'm not sure where my family is. But I'm not alone. Theres always some person or creature around. And curently I'm traveling with all of you people." Bana said as looked around wondering which way would be the best way to walk.

Mariah was back at the hideout, the bigger bandit on his knees. "Please have mercy!" He cried. Mariah snapped back. "Do you have any idea what you could have done?! The whole plan could have been ruined by you!"
The crowd of bandits sat with these two in the middle. Mariah called a meeting to 'set an example.' The bandit cried. "I swear, It'll never happen again!" Mariah laughed. "You're right, and I'll make sure it won't." Mariah quickly took out her sword and in a flash swung it at the bandit. A few seconds of silence, the bandit with a stunned face, until his head finally fell and rolled to the floor. The whole heap fell after that, blood everywhere.
Mariah announced to the stunned crowd. "Let that be a lesson to you! Under no circumstances are you to harm Irene! Or more importantly, the necklace she wears. Both are crucial to my plan! But now, she travells with three others. And we can't touch her what with the old man too. Above all, there must be no bloodshed near the one called 'Niko.' He is a danger to us all. Even Irene was no match for whatever creature posesses him. So this question remains, how do we get to Irene?"
The second bandit that was there before, now had a bandage over his cheek, grumbled. Mariah read his mind, and realised he was thinking about the little girl Bana. "Of course! The child, Bana. She just might be Irene's weak point. We just have to... Convince her somehow." Another bandit spoke from the crowd. "Ya want us to get her?"
Mariah shook her head. "No, I think this is something I have to do. This job is for my female parenting instinct... And of course, mind reading always helps." Mariah laughed, and the others followed their laughter nervously. Mariah stopped laughing, and immediately so did everyone else. "This meeting is over! Get to work." Mariah looked down before leaving. "And somebody clean this mess up." Mariah spit at te corpse, grinned, and left.

Yuki smiled sadly, one hand resting on Bana's shoulder. "That's right. We'll take care of you, alright?" Then she looked around. "Well, where should we start? It could be a while before we leave, so we can look around as much as we want."
Niko listened intently to what he said, surprised at how long this man had lived. A thousand years was a very long time. When he said that Irene cold die, his eyes widened slightly in concern. "What can I do to help?"

The old man sighed wearily. "Irene's powers are hard to control. Mariah was a strong-willed girl, she was able to find a way. But Irene and Mariah have a big difference, and that's while Mariah has the power to see one's mind... Irene could see through one's heart. Having the feelings of those around her interfering with her own made it harder for her than Mariah. At the time they were so young, they were best friends. But then something in Mariah changed and she became evil. When Irene was seven the bandits, Mariah's father being the boss, killed this whole town. I cared for Irene for a few years, strengthening her power and giving her the tool to control them. ut there is one thing I never told her."
The old man sighed and bowed his head. "I gave them both their powers. Mariah was supposed to rule this town after her father, and Mariah's family and the rest of the bandits were supposed to be the future guards. I though I was helping her, when really..."
The old man looked at Niko seriously. "Her powers work like mine, her powers react with her feelings. Her whole life she has been fighting her power because figting and bloodsed and hate was all she knew. But if you can show her love, then she could control her power.
If she had just one person that cared for her deeper than even I do. She cares for you Niko, all you need to do to save her life is to care back. Irene held her power not too long ago, she had complete control before I put the necklace on and it was because she was glad you were okay and happy."
((Ah! So much. gonk sweatdrop ))

Niko was still having trouble accepting that Irene cared about him, but if he thought about it, he and Irene were alike in many ways. And if Irene was anything like him, she would be finding it hard to see that he cared for her as well. He was sure that he did; there was no one he could connect to better than her.
He felt a tinge of anger as the old man talked about giving her her powers. So she hadn't had any say in the matter? It was alot like the situation he was in with Shadow; she might not have a completely seperate entity inside her, but there was something that didn't belong there and was ruining her life. This man couldn't have had any idea it would do this when he gave her the powers, but this didn't stop the hint of anger that had appeared in his eyes. Of course he would help her though, after all he cared about what happened to her. There was no way he could just leave her at this point.
And Shadow had spared her. That must count for something.
He looked up at the old man again. "I'll take care of her," He said, vioce quiet but determined.

The old man sighed in relief. "Thank you. And I know what I did was wrong. I really thought, that things would have turned out the way I planned. What a fool I was. And now that my life span has almost ended, it's a relief to this old wizard that little Irene is safe in new hands. It also seems to me Irene has learned a valuable lesson while she was gone. To rid yourself of the demon inside you, you must find strength to fight it yourself. Because when it comes down to it, only you weild the power. That goes for anyone, magical or not. Irene truly has grown, and I owe it all to you and her other friends. She is blossoming into a truly wonderful young lady." The old man showed a hapiness in his eyes as he spoke. He really did feel bad for cursing Irene, and at the same time was at peace knowing Irene was safe with people who cared about her. Even her parents had doubts before.
