"That's not possible," protested Peter. It was finally starting to work; he was beginning to feel guilty. "You should know better," he said kindly, rubbing her arms gently. "I just feel like the best place for me to be right now is a stable job."

"I know...I understand that work and money are important for all of us...I really do." Jess looked up at him with her big eyes again, knowing that he was about to crack. "I just feel that right now our own little family is important too. Do you know how much the babies would kick every time I talked about you to them? Or how excited they were when they felt me get up from bed because they knew it meant you were coming home?" She took his free hand, interlacing her fingers. "They love you so much, you have no idea. Even if they don't remember it, I think having daddy home with them for their first few days is going to mean a lot to them."

Peter looked troubled. "Well...I never said that our family doesn't matter..." He was quieting. "I suppose I might as well not go in again today...though I'm not sure about tomorrow..."

Jess allowed her expression to brighten, though not enough to arouse suspicion. "Really? Oh thank you Peter!" She dried her eyes and gave him one of those kisses that got men into a lot of trouble when they were in public. "You're the best husband ever."

This was encouraging. Peter smiled. "...I don't see why it means so much to you." He kissed Jess lightly, on the cheek. "But if it does, why not?"

Jess stretched her arms over her head, yawning a bit. "I suppose. I want to talk to the medi-witch once more though. I have a question for her." She pulled the covers off and swung her legs over the side of the bed. "I can see my feet again..." She chuckled a little at the sight, forgetting that her legs still existed. At least they hadn't gotten too fat. "Where are the twins?"

"Asleep. The assistant took her into another room." Peter stood up. "What's your question?" he asked curiously. It hadn't occurred to him that the parenting was just beginning.

"Oh...it's just something silly." Jess waved her hand dismissively, looking around. "Where are my robes? They changed me into this silly thing and just took off with them." She frowned, not liking the very unflattering hospital gown.

"What is it, though?" asked Peter. He found Jess's robes lying in a heap atop some blankets. "You have to tell me before I give these to you."

Jess frowned. "You're mean. You know I can't stand going around in something like this." She sighed and lowered her voice. "I want to know if there's something I can take to get rid of all this lard I have now." She poked at her stomach, disgusted. "Without a baby in there, I'm just fat."

Peter raised his eyebrows. "You're not fat, Jess. You're small, considering you've just now given birth to twins. He handed her the garments. "You can ask if you'd like. I just don't think you should feel like you need to."
