 Running. He liked running, too. He added more twigs to his false little shelter, and sweet, edible berries. They looked succulent even to him, although he was not certain that geese preferred them. Then he went looking for mud.

Seven geese was definitely too many to be running around under without rest, Wherewithal decided. At least they kept his back warm as he heaved to catch his breath.

Glossbones was bloody but he found a nice stash of mushrooms. Harvesting them, he carried them back to his prizes. Perhaps one of the last geese will notice and follow him.

He found it, a little far from where he'd placed his twigs. He rolled in the mud to ensure his white bits were covered, and for one more thing... Leaves, now. Green, sap-leaking ones.
