Leif was abandoned by his parents when they accidentally woke his stone during October. Unable to handle his mutation, they figured it would be better to place him in the care of the orphanage rather than hold onto him. So, Leif grew up in the care of the orphanage caretakers, surrounded by other children his age, both mutated and "normal."
While Leif was never actively picked on, he did get the occasional double take or gasp from his peers and occasionally new caretakers. Leif knew he was different, but he didn't really understand why. He developed a habit of avoiding eye-contact to lessen the amount of strange looks, which helped in the end.
Leif is not particularly bad at speaking to people, he's just very shy. He has a small stammer that crops up every so often, so he tends to let others do most of the talking, even though he does like to socialize. It's something that, along with his eyes, he's self-conscious about.
At 9, Leif was adopted by Corben Datura, an Asphodel Academy teacher who frequently volunteered at the orphanage. He'd always liked Corben's weekly "outdoor adventures," and viewed him as a sort of "favorite volunteer," even though he'd never quite worked up the courage to talk to him at length. Corben's energy was quite overwhelming!
Now that he has a home of his own and is attending the academy, he's starting to have to try to reorient himself to the new social order of the academy. It's leaving him feeling a little lost and unsure, but he does like it so far. It helps to have a designated person to come home to and talk with at the end of the day.

Leif has a very active imagination, he likes to tell stories to those who would listen. Since he spends a lot of time just observing the world, he comes up with a lot of mental short stories about what he's seeing, but he's never really written them down.

If he thinks someone is having a bad day (based off of observations) Leif does his absolute best to accommodate them in every way he can. On occasion, with people he knows, he'll reach out of them first to see if they're alright or if he can do anything for them.

Leif is fundamentally a fairly optimistic person. He does have bouts of negativity, but for the most part, he tries to look at the bright side of life and come up with positive suggestions for how things could turn out in the end.

It's not necessarily anxiety, but Leif is a little reluctant to try new things at first, or get heavily involved with new people, primarily on account of his mutation. As he grows older he'll become more confident.

When he's decided he doesn't like something, or definitely likes someone,, it's like pulling teeth to get him to change his mind. Leif will ignore reason if it doesn't fit into his perception of something or someone if he likes it enough.

Leif tends to find one thing, or one person, and latch onto it. It becomes everything in his life until he fizzles out and moves onto the next thing. The obsessions can last anywhere between a few days or years.
