Brooke stared at Rellick.
'You want... Jay... to come with us...?' She was about to protest, but decided against it and made her way back. Amaree had woken. 'Aygra's sister appeared in the night, and they want a drink. There's hyenas. Rellick went after them, and...' She hesitated. 'I think he wants Jay to come with us and take the cubs for some water.' She almost choked on the words. God, how that Jay got on her nerves.

Brooke paused at the mouth of the den. 'Whoa, ey...' She said, suddenly, looking over at Amaree. She knew, instinctively, that she was no longer a little cub. She had grown. She smiled over at the brown lioness. 'Lookit.' She said.

Amaree laughed and nudged Brooke. "You look like an oversized Blueberry Muffin, m'dear..." Amaree winked at Brooke and continued to round up all the cubs.

Brooke threw her nose in the air with mock indignance.
'Huh, oversized bluberry muffin indeed!' She huffed, shooting a quick teasing glance at Amaree. She butted the lioness playfully with her nose. 'And what are you supposed to be, huh? A sunburnt piece of the savanna?'

"Huh?" The Dark Prince blinked when he was told to accompany Rellick. "But I..."
It was hard to say no when the lioness who had requested it disappeared. Grumbling under his breath, the male continued to follow the Scarlet King's trail. He was a bit nervous and a little anticipatory. Never having been in a fight before, he wasn't sure if he wanted to be in one.

'Come on, little cubs, let's go get a drink, huh?' Brooke said softly, shooting a glance at the sleeping Jax. She stopped. 'Wait, whe... Where's Jay?' She looked out into the darkness. He must have gone after Rellick. 'Oh great...' She muttered. 'Just what we needed.' She would very much have liked having a lion with them with the hyenas around, but she didn't want to waste time looking for the black lion. The cubs wanted water, and she wanted sleep.

Amaree glanced at Brooke and giggled. "Sunburnt Savanna works..." She nudged Brooke and looked off in the distance. Jayvn had seemed to take up the trail and was heading off after where Rellick had gone. She looked and saw the worried looks that Brooke was giving. "It's okay, we can handle this without him." Amaree got on one side of the cubs and nudged to Areli to get on the other. "Now Brooke, you get in front, and..." She looked back and thought. "We'll just have to stay together so that no one gets behind us, now won't we?" She counted each of the cubs to make sure that they were all there one final time. Then she looked in the direction of the water hole. "Come on, quickly, let's go."

Brooke shrugged. 'You never know...' She muttered. She moved to take up lead, and then stopped. 'You lead, Rhee, I'm better taking the back.' She said.

Aygra glanced between the lionesses. "I'll take one of the sides..." The now older cub nodded and assumed the forth side of the weird box around Dolsia. He knew how to kill, had killed a mongoose not long before coming to Scarlet Shadows.

Dolsia, now grown aswell, was a quiet young girl. She blended into the shadows around her, cast my the other lions, and her purple eyes shined as she watched them. Her right ear would sometimes flicker backwards and twitch -- an odd uncontrollable habit perhaps, though twas quite funny, for anyone that happened to be watching.

Brooke shook her head. 'I know we're all grown up a bit now, but despite everything.' She tried reasoning with the cubs. 'You're both the same age, and still cubs. Sure, you're not babies anymore, but please, just for tonight, stick together in the middle? Rellick would be really mad if anything happened to you guys.'

The Scarlet King crouched over a whimpering Hyena, his new bulk making it all too easy for him to fight and pin the young dog. It laughed and whined, wriggling uncomfortably beneath the weight of his paw on its chest.
"Never come near my lands again.. Nor any of your kin." He snarled, golden mane glinting in the dying light. "If I catch scent of you.. I will kill you, and any you happen to be with. These lands are mine, as are those who live here.. Prey and Lion alike."
He sent it yipping apologies into the night, marked with claws and teeth. With a sigh and a shake of his head, the now adult turned back toward his den, eager to see his Pride again.

The far off sound of shrill yelps caught Brooke's attention. Her ears perked forward. 'Sounds like the 'yena's gone.' She commented. A sudden snuffle behind her made her head turn. Jax's ears were pitched forward, and his eyes were half open. He was tense. Brooke held her breath. If that little baby woke up...
A moment passed, and the brown infant relaxed again. His ears drooped and he snuggled back into the warmth of Areli's fur with a quiet sigh. Brooke let out her breath slowly. She stared at Jax with wonderment. How had he heard...? Was he all that attuned to his surroundings? What might his life have been like before now?

Amaree also heard the yelp and jumped down from her perch. The water trip had been a success and all cubs had returned without much trouble. Amaree went to the mouth of the cave and let out a loud growling roar as if asking the Scarlet King if everything was alright. She let out a second roar to tell Jayvn to come back if he was out there already. She was surprised that the yelp of the hyena had awakened young Jax, and glanced over at Brooke as if to say "Don't worry about him." Amaree sighed and sat down at the mouth of the cave to wait for the King to return.

Brooke shrugged. It was oddly unsettling, seeing the cub's reaction. He was even more alert, all his senses even more sharp and well-worn than her own. She didn't want to know what he had gone through with his own family. Whatever had happened to her, it must have been so much worse for him.
