"Yes, Susan?" The Doctor was walking back outside the TARDIS. He was going up onto the top of the hill. Susan was following him, and he sat down on the top of the hill, looking out to the ocean.
It was inky black from the night... he could see the faint reflection of stars on th sea swimming across its surface. In these years of the earth, before there was electricity, the stars were plentiful. He watched them, thinking of his life and his travels, subconsciously naming the galaxy of each sparkle his eye rested upon.
The moon was full. He thought of Martha. Then he thought of Rose. He sighed, and remembered Susan. He looked at her, his eyes full of care.
~~~
"Tag, you're it!"
"Hey, Irene! Without fair warning? What is this?"
Irene ran giggling from the red TARDIS onto the field. Sam chased after her. It felt good, venting off the day with a good old fashioned game of tag. He was laughing, brandishing his baseball bat. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the Doctor and Susan just sitting and talking.
He was taken by surprise when Irene tackled him from behind.
"Hey! You slowpoke, you can't catch me!"
She ran in a little circle, then back into the TARDIS. Sam ran after her.
He chased her around the consul, then noticed she had stopped and was panting in front of the Captain.
"Do you... want to... play... tag?" She gasped.
He looked surprised.
Sam saw Sorvad, looking out of the TARDIS door, with an expression of longing on his face.
"Dude, do you wanna play? Maybe it'll take your mind off of things." He looked out, to the Doctor's TARDIS. Where Eddie was. He had an erie feeling that Sorvad inherited the human feeling of attraction. He wasn't sure if Daleks had it, too. By the sound of it, Daleks didn't know love.
Irene was laughing and running away from the Captain, who still was wearing a shocked expression.
"I say!" The Captain called after her.
"Dude." Sam said slowly to Sorvad. "Just... join us when you're ready."
Sam ran after Irene, catching up and tagging her.
It was so very cold and the stars were dancing. Time and Space dancing with the stars, entangling around each other in some embrace, twisting and turning out of sync. She could smell the shifts in the air. The disturbances in time, the ripples in space.
Always shifting, always changing, never ever satisfied.
She was so very hungry.
The previous night had served her well. She had taken two homeless men and a pet cat. She was walking down sixth street towards Pershing Square, passing by an alleyway where the dead men she left lay. Police had by then taken notice and were gathering up the bodies. It would be found they died of natural causes, and there'd be no trace of her.
Despite this however, she was still so very hungry. Her belly ached for a Time Lord, but she had a suspicion her diet would consist of humans for perhaps the rest of her life. The hunger would never leave.
It was 2008, the weather was warm.
She was returning three books to the Los Angeles Library, journeying into the depths of the great Library for more reading material. Humanity's imagination is far more fascinating than their realities.
Her name was Renfield and on that particular day she noticed a strange smell in the air. Distant yet familiar.
The smell of a TARDIS.
The Doctor looked at the moon, then back at Susan.
"So long I've believed I was the last Time Lord left. I've had so many companions... friends... but they were human, and eventually they all had to leave me. I was afraid I would loose them, so I left them. I..." The Doctor couldn't say any more, so he took a deep breath.
"You were in love, Susan." He sighed.
"What happened to him?" He bit his lip. "Did he die?"
~~~
Irene ran in circles around the Captain, and tagged him. She trotted over to Sam who seemed to be thinking about something.
Whispering, she said to him "Do you think Time Lords know how to play?"
Sam looked edgy. "Irene... are you ok? A man died to save you. Why are you... playing?"
Irene looked shocked for a moment. She felt the rush of tears to her face, at the bitterness of the words. "I don't know... I'm just... I don't want to think about it right now. I..." She gasped, trying to hold back tears. Sam hugged her briefly.
"I'm sorry... I didn't mean to sound like that." Sam said. "It's ok, we all had a rough day."
"I sort of just want to go home." Irene muttered into Sam's shoulder.
"Okay, we'll tell the Doctor once he's done talking with Susan." Sam looked back at the Doctor and his granddaughter. "For now, let's see if this Time Lord can play tag."
Sam patted Irene on the back, and ran towards the Captain who looked very confused. Irene laughed at the spectacle, and ran after Sam.

She swung her legs over the ledge. Somehow she'd found her way to the wardrobe closet which had hidden itself deep within the TARDIS after its initial use. She had her legs between the stairwell and was holding up a black suit jacket she had found lying on the floor.
Eddie looked around, enjoying the echoes the TARDIS made simply on its own. TARDISes, she designed some of them, or helped anyway. She loved them. Absolutely loved them. Knew them inside and out. The TARDIS echoed and she smiled, it was talking to her.
She then looked at the coat she held in her hands. Looked left then right, to see if anyone was there. Then dug her head into the coat and sniffed the distant smell of the Doctor.
"You may be a crazy geezer, but damn it you smell nice." She was silent for a moment, but then she began laughing. Really laughing for the first time it was would seem years. She was just laughing at herself, at the silliness of what she'd just done. It was just all so funny.
"Like a freaking ocean!" She laughed. "You smell like an ocean!" She laughed.
The TARDIS echoed something and it seemed, they laughed together.
"Oh geeze! I should go mess around with the bedroom or something." She looked around. "Maybe this is the bedroom." She couldn't tell, it was all so messy in it's own neatness.
