Richie put Greg's arm over his shoulder. "Wait up! We can only hobble so fast!"

Suddenly, bullets whizzed by Richie and Greg. Richie instinctively threw himself to the ground, pulling Greg on top of him to cushion his fall, then rolled him off to his good side and pulling him to a fallen tree to use as some mild cover.

"Maryse! We're taking fire! Keep running to GTA! We'll catch up!" Richie said as he pulled a pistol from an ankle holster, handing it to Greg.

"Do you know how to use this?!" Richie shouted at greg, not waiting for an answer as he handed him a 9mm. He prayed Greg knew how to use it as he set his pack down, aiming his SPAS at the nearest soldier. There were seven of them. They all had what seemed like M4 carbines, although one had something much heavier. After firing off a couple more shots, he saw one of the men with a SAW.

"**** this," Richie shouted, loading his last eight shots into his SPAS, Greg shouting that he had run out of ammo. Richie looked through his bag for a white hankerchief.

"Gimme that," Richie said, pointing to the splint on Greg's leg, "Now!"

Greg did as he was asked, carefully but quickly taking off his wooden splint. Richie tied the hankerchief around it, waving it from behind the log.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Richie shouted, the bullets dying down.

"Come out with your hands up! Drop any weapons! come slowly!" One of the men, presumably the "leader" of the men, shouted in response.

Richie helped Greg stand up. "He has a screwed up ankle. I have to hold him up. I ain't gonna do anything stupid though."

Richie stood there as four soldiers made their way over to the two of them, guns aimed right at them. Two took Greg from Richie and supported him, the other two zip-tying Greg and Richie, then aiming their M4's at them.

"Are there any more of you?" The same man asked.

Richie paused, thinking. He looked at the man in the eyes.

"No, we're it." He lied, not knowing if the soldiers were taking them somewhere safe or to a bad place. He didn't want to take the chance of Maryse getting caught by these guys in case something bad happened. He knew she could make it, and he hoped that somehow she would find it in her heart to at leat try to save them.

"Good, call the truck, tell them where we are. Hurry, I want to get out of this place before the entire forest is ablaze," the leader said.

One of the soldiers talked into a radio, and a moment later the other supply truck appeared from the darkness. The soldiers threw Richie and Greg inside the back, getting in after them. After they started driving, he thought he saw the slight movement of camo as the truck drove by some bushes.

"So, where we headed?" Richie asked in a mad but up serious tone.

"We're heading to GTA." One of the men said.

"No way, we were jsut on our way there! we heard it was zombie-safe." Greg said in response, almost extatic.

"Yeah, they're getting hit pretty hard over there." The man responded.

"Where you guys from?" Richie asked.

"We came from New York ourselves," the man replied, "We heard on the radio that GTA was a safehaven, but there were constant attacks by Zack,"

"Where are the rest of your unit?" Richie asked.

"We seperated from our unit when the unit leader went rogue. We high tailed it out of there with what we could grab. We were under self-given orders to pick up survivors. We saw movement in that store back there, so we went in. Suddenly we were attacked. we withdrew from the building, but then it exploded form the inside. We were the only ones that got out. all the supplies were in the other truck that exploded. Hopefully we have enough gas to get to GTA. Otherwise, we're hoofin it."

Maryse ran as fast as she could, confident that Richie and Greg would be right behind her, until she remembered that Greg's leg was injured. Damn that leg, she thought, and turned back. She was beginning to wonder whether or not it would be more beneficial for them to leave Greg behind, but she shook the thought off almost as soon as she'd thought it. She could never do something so heartless. Suddenly, she heard the sound of gunfire. She stopped in her tracks and hid in the bushes. Peering through the bushes, she saw Richie and Greg lying on the ground. Richie had removed Greg's splint and was using it as a white flag of surrender. The soldiers had caught them. The soldiers had surrounded them and stood there, aiming their M4s at them. They were speaking, but she was too far away to hear what they were saying. She hoped Richie wouldn't tell them about her. Somehow, she knew he wouldn't. She didn't know how she knew, but she did. She knew.

She also knew that she couldn't abandon them. No matter what, she couldn't abandon them.

Maryse watched as the soldiers helped Richie and Greg to their feet and forced them into a supply truck. Within minutes, the supply truck was rolling and the convoy, or what was left of it, was on the move again. She followed them quickly and quietly. The woodland BDUs that Richie had given her were coming in handy. They allowed her to follow the soldiers unnoticed, so long as she stayed in the forest and stepped softly. Only her pale face could give her away. She stopped to consider this, then reached down, picked up a handful of mud, and smeared it across her face. She hated the feel of it, but she did it, anyway.

Perfectly camouflaged, she tailed the military convoy, keeping her eyes on Richie and Greg as they sat in the back of the supply truck talking to the soldiers. They hadn't killed them, so maybe they weren't so bad, after all. She'd have to find some way to communicate with Richie in order to find out.

(They don't necessarily have to, so no, probably not. Besides, too many characters in one place at one time might make things overly complicated.)

(No, this RP and my Shanty Town RP won't link up. It would be too complicated just like NoLifeKing said.)

Richie made light conversation with the soldiers. They apologized for the handcuffs, explaining that it was procedure for hostiles captured. Richie knew he didn't have a point to argue with the manm, so he didn't. He did, after all, shoot at them. The convoy was consisting of two humvees, the APC and the truck. They were moving slowly, almost a crawl. Every now and then Richie would glance out the back of the truck and see some forest camo BDU's. He knew Maryse was following them. He just hoped she didn't do anything irrational. After all, he didn't know if she knew the soldiers were friendlies or not. Suddenly, the APC, which was behind tha supply truck, started to swerve violently. through the slits in the front, so the driver could see, Richie saw commotion, then chaos. Two of the soldiers in the back were attacking the rest, biting at them and clawing at them. The soldier in the passenger seat leaned back with his pistol to shoot, but one of the soldiers grabbed his wrist and ripped it off.

"Jesus ******" One of the soldiers sitting across from Richie said.

"What the **** is going on back there?" one of the men shouted into the radio.

"Collins and Sterling...they're infected. They turned," There was a scream as four zombies attacked the driver, the APC swerving into a river the convoy was driving parallel to.

"Keep going! There's nothing we can do for them," a voice over the radio said, who came off as being the leader of the soldiers.

Richie stared at the APC as it shok violently in its unbalanced position, then got still. He hoped they were almost to GTA, he was tired of seeing nothing but death and destruction...

"Jesus Christ". Greg commented as he watched the truck swerve off of the road, he watched as the dead steeped out of the downed vehicle bits of them hanging off and the moonlight dancing off of the streams of blood on their uniforms and faces. He rubbed his face displaying his fatigue and desperate need to shave. After a groan errupted from his mouth he looked at one of the soldiers, who looked back at him.
"I really hate zombies". He said, the soldier laughed.
"Really? I honestly always thought they where man's best friend". The soldier siad through the laughter rubbing his face in a similair way to Greg.
Greg smiled and shook his head, the laughter slowly disapating, as the seriousness of what had just happened sunk in.

After 45 minutes of driving, Richie still saw the camo moving behind them. Richie pulled out a piece of paper from his notebook he took from his pack as Greg entertained the soldiers with stories, and vice versa. Richie scribbled as best he could, tearing it out, putting the notebook in his bag again, and dropping his right hand with the paper in it to his side, letting it go, and watched as it settled gently onto the dirt road they were traveling on. He didn't know how much farther they had to go to GTA, but he didn't want Maryse following them if she knew how to get there faster. He then resumed his conversation with the soldiers, exchanging stories as they continued to creep along the backroads and dirt roads of the countryside.

Maryse had been following the convoy for what seemed like forever, but was in reality only forty-five minutes, give or take. She was fortunate that they were driving so slow. Otherwise, it would have been impossible. The convoy hadn't stopped since they'd starting moving, not even when their APC swerved off the road and into the forest, and she was getting tired, so very tired. She wasn't sure how much farther she could go without a rest. Just then, a small piece of paper flitted out of the supply truck and onto the road. If it hadn't been white, Maryse would never have seen it. She stopped for a much needed moment, allowing the convoy to pull away from her, then sneaked out onto the road and picked up the paper. She couldn't read it in the dark, so she pulled out her flashlight and switched it on.

It was a note from Richie! His handwriting is terrible, she thought. The note said that the soldiers were heading to the GTA and that if she new a faster way to get there, she should go. Maryse considered this. The soldiers seemed to be sticking to the back roads, no doubt because the main roads and the highways were obstructed by thousands of abandoned cars. There was no way their convoy could get through. One person on foot, on the other hand, was a different story.

Maryse slipped the note into her bag and set off in her own direction. She'd traveled to Toronto before, so she had a general idea of where she was. She'd make her way through the forest and onto the highway, then continue on to Toronto from there. With any luck, she'd make it before the convoy did.

Guided by her memory of Richie's map, as well as her own previous experiences, and her flashlight, Maryse worked her way through the forest. The black trees stood up in random directions, at angles to the earth. As a Canadian, she knew why that was. She knew very well. It was the permafrost. In Canada, some parts of the ground, the shadowy parts, stayed frozen all year. Other parts thawed out and turned to mud, which sagged. The earth became fluid, like water. If you could stay still long enough to watch it, say over the course of a year, you would see waves rolling through it, like on the surface of the ocean. It was kind of cool. Unfortunately, it was hell on her feet. They kept catching on exposed roots and broken rocks. She tripped many times, but she never fell. Slowly, carefully, Maryse worked her way through the forest, and the forest watched. The forest watched, content to observe her as she struggled through the dense underbrush just as the slender crescent moon struggled through thickening patches of dark clouds overhead. The forest watched, but it didn't care.

Allen Price walked down a route that he knew well as he walked he thought about how things were at home. A teenager with an automatic shotgun and a bad limp. the kid turned around and opened up. allen instantly took cover "Cease fire! Cease fire!" he sceamed. "I'll take'em down from behind!" th kid understood and stopped shooting. Allen then opened up with his assault Rifle aiming at their heads. the horde was REdead in a couple seconds. he ran over to the kid he was on the ground holding his ankle, face twisted in pain."Whats your name Kid" he asked."he looked up eyes wide."Ry-Ryu" he stammered. "captain Allen Price Marine Recon"Allen replied Can you walk?"
"N-No...".

Maryse kept walking until she came to a clearing, a place where the moonlight could actually reach the forest floor. Then she stopped. She leaned up against a tree. She was exhausted. She could barely walk any farther, not after days walking for so long with no time to eat or sleep for more than a few hours at a time, and no shelter except the lining of the BDUs Richie had given her to keep her warm and dry. Her ankles ached and burned. Every muscle in her body felt stiff and unresponsive. She'd hardly rested for more than a few moments when she heard a twig snap somewhere in the darkness. She looked up. Between two of the trees, a pair of amber eyes flickered into glowing life. They caught the silvery moonlight and speared her with it, froze her in place. Slowly, languorously, they closed again and were gone, like embers flickering out at the bottom of a dead campfire.

"Merde," she breathed, and scratched at her prickling armpits. Slowly, she turned around in a circle.

Were there more of them? Was there a pack nearby?

She heard them howl, then. She'd heard dogs howl at the moon before but not like this. The howling went on and on and on with new voices jumping in and following, a sound almost mournful in tone. They were talking amongst themselves and she figured they were telling each other where to find her. She knew that Ontario had a healthy wolf population, but she'd never expected to see one so far south, or for one to see her, or for more than one to see her.

Maryse considered her options. She lacked the energy to walk another step, but her instincts told her to run, to dig deep inside of herself, deeper than she'd ever been before, and run. She shook her head forcefully, dispelling the thought. She knew it was foolish, knew that running was the worst thing she could do, the worst thing she could possibly do. Like all predators, wolves perceived flight as weakness. The sight of prey turning tail and trying to run from them only serves to make them more voracious. Besides, she couldn't outrun a wolf, let alone a pack of them. They knew this rough land by instinct.

The wilderness belonged to them. Not to humans. Not even to zombies.

Instead, she raised her arms and screamed like a banshee. She screamed and screamed and screamed until she was out of breath, and then she screamed some more. She put all of her pent-up emotions into her screaming. All of her fear, all of her hatred, all of her anger, all of her sorrow. She screamed, and it worked. The wolves scattered, disappearing into the darkness as if they'd been candles and they’d been snuffed out.

Some predators were confused and even spooked by aggressive behavior.

Maryse felt something wet dribble across the side of her mouth. She reached up and found that she was weeping copiously.

Noel smashed the lock on the door off with the butt of his M16 and walked in. He spoke slowly into a mic linked to his ipod, which was doubling as a voice recorder. "Day One of house sweeps, nothing so far, I've swept two small houses, Collin swept three detached and Bobby is leading the rest of the crew through a apartment building..Starting on my third house now." Noel looked around, keeping his M16 in a stable stance, he swept the beam of the flashlight attached to his rifle over the living room and cushion, blood, but no infected yet. He swept the basement over a few times, he founds some canned food and ammo, but nothing else. He flicked the shotgun barrel at the end of his M16 on as he walked up the stairs, he tested the wood with one foot. Satisfied with the strength in the wood, he walked up the stairs...

After hours of driving, there night filled with howls. Richie looked out into the distant woods. Then there were shrill screams from what he assumed was a woman. Richie shuddered at the thought of someone surviving all of this just to be taken out by some hungry wolves.
"Looks like the wolves found somebody, poor soul," one of the soldiers said, looking at the woods too.
"Are there many wolves around here? I didn't think there were any down this far south," Greg said.
"Not originally. But survivors up north drove them south 'cuz they were killing the precious few livestock tat were up there. They stuck around these parts because the people are either up north or trapped in the city with the zombies. Every now and then some people wander off into the woods trying to get away, but the wolves get them," the soldier said, "We heard it over the radio as we entered the area. GTA was broadcasting on all frequencies with the hazards of coming north."
Richie's heart sank. He hadn't seen Maryse since he dropped the paper, so he assumed that she knew a shorter way. But the whole area was covered in wilderness, and she would have to cut through it if she knew a shortcut. Richie realized that Maryse was in trouble, and she needed his help.
"I have to check out those screams," Richie said to the soldiers, who looked at him with surprise.
"Whoever was screaming is probably dead, you can't do anything for them," One of the soldiers said.
"Listen. I have a friend out there. She was with us when you picked us up, ut she was hiding in the woods. We didn't tell you about he because we didn't know if you were going to kill us or not. If she's okay, I'll bring her to GTA. If not, then you'll have one less pack of wolves to worry about out here," Richie said.
"Alright, get her if you can. Don't get yourself killed. Here, take this," the soldier said, reaching into a box in the truck, pulling out an M4 carbine out and handing it to Richie, along with four sets of 2 clips taped together for faster reloading, resulting in a total of 8 extra clips, plus the 2 already in the weapon.
"You know how to shoot one of these?" the soldier asked, half serious.
"The end with the hole points away from me, got it," Richie said jokingly, puting the extra clips in his pockets. Another soldier handed Richie his bag that had been taken when they joined the oldiers.
"Good luck out there, GTA is four miles north, through some dense woods, be careful," the soldier said.
"Greg, you stay here, you're in no condition to come with me," Richie said.
"Man, I had no plans to go out there," Greg said, smiling at Richie, who returned the smile and hopped out of the slow moving truck.
He watched the truck for a few seconds, one f the soldiers saluting him. Richie returned the salute, turning and running towards the direction of the screams praying that if it was Maryse that she was okay.
