To remedy this, she continued making absolutely absurd attempts, just to keep herself grounded. This was sort of the opposite of reasonable grounding, which made it entirely reasonable for her.
The spider simply looked at her and flicked off the dummy's flower crown.

Spiderweb wings weren't effective either.

Puella huffed. Okay, focusing for real this time. The problem was that Puella wasn't much for the consumption of media: she didn't even really have an idea of what armor was supposed to look like. Much less armor made out of cloth.
"I wish you could talk," Puella said mournfully to her spider companion. "And give me help!"
But everyone else was getting along just fine without help. She made a careful bodice and arranged it pleasingly on the dummy, holding her breath as the spider attacked it again.
Nope. It'd struggled a little more this time, and Puella gave it a thumbs up. "Sorry you have to do so much work," she told it wistfully. "I'll get it; I swear!"

Puella could do this! She wasn't going to be a helpless little burden.
She did the exact same thing as she'd done with her previous piece of armor, watching carefully to see whether it grew in effectiveness as she grew in experience. Or something.
It looked like the answer was 'not quite': the spider, too, was learning. And it was a much faster learner than Puella was. Or it was better at attacking than Puella was at building things. Well!

Nor were spiderweb buttwings, though they looked so hilarious that Maysy choked on her own spit.
Three times.

Hacking and coughing up all that spit might have damaged the integrity of what she was working on, because it fell right apart without the spider even touching it.

A more traditional breastplate was created this time, with a few standard holes left in it for tool pockets. Tool pockets also made excellent entry points for spider fangs.

Tool pockets were obviously not a good idea. Maysy tried just making a spiderweb toolbelt. She didn't actually expect that one to work, and it didn't.

Piling on giant tangled globs of spider silk was ineffective as well.

The same method was no more effective when one stood on their head and tried applying it with their tail.

Puella's next attempt was a bit more of a cursory one: she mummy-wrapped the dummy, watching with interest as the spider attacked it again.
Well, that hadn't really worked out for her, but then again: she hadn't expected it too. It'd been fun to see it struggle through the layers, though! Heh.

Just because she'd tried all of the other directions, Maysy tried laying on her other side to fling the spider silk on this time.

"Every time I do something new, you somehow already know how to counter it!" Puella whined, bopping her spider friend on one of its many knees. "But that's okay!"
Someday, she'd be good at things like this, she vowed. Then, carefully, she bent to complete her task again. No dice, she was saddened to learn at the end of it.

Direction of application was clearly not a vital variable.
