"Bah," Radi said, annoyed at the cub's peppy nature. "I'm Radi'Utengo. Now come on. We're going." He shot the lioness a look of hate and walked deeper into the savanna. Whether the cub was following did not matter. He sound found a fallen tree that had been struck by lightening. It had, once hitting the ground, split in three. The middle was hollow from termites (like most of the tree, hence why it fell down) and thus accessible from both ends. It looked rather useful and thus he stood there waiting for the voice of the cub to tell him that the cub was here.

He had been pulled out all this way, away from his waiting spot. What if they came again while he was gone? What if he missed them? A mean-spirited voice in the back of his mind told him that was never going to happen. He grunted and narrowed his eyes in anger ...and waited.

"Okay... Radi!" he said as if he had to let the name register first. "Let's go!" It didn't matter that Radi had already said it. It just sounded cool to Ori for himself to be saying it ...so he did. Ori trotted behind silently because that seemed like the thing to be doing. But his mind was not as silent. He watched everything that they passed, each with interest as if he had never seen them before, the way they moved, the sound they made, what they were doing. All there really was were bugs but that didn't matter to Ori.

Radi sat down next to the tree and looked rather bored. Ori took that to mean there was something about the tree to be concerned about. Orifiel hopped onto the middle piece and began to slowly walked down it, one paw in front of the other like a tight-roper. "I don't see what's so bad about it," he chimed and hopped off the other end when he reached it.

Radi jerked his head to face Ori. "That's the point, you ninny. Now stop messing around!" he snapped. Realizing that this was not the best way to go about things, especially if the cub thus ran to his mother and tattled, Radi wouldn't be in the most pleasant of situations. Rather, it'd be a rerun. And, gods forbid, he didn't want that. "What I mean is," he said in a pleasant tone this time, "we're going to use it." Radi lowered his head and pushed the middle part of the tree so that one end was pushed firmly against a different section of the tree, leaving only one opening for the middle rather than two. "I want you to crawl in there and hide at the other end. I'm going to chase something into it and you have to kill it. Got it?"

He looked around for life. Finding something small enough to fit int there might be hard. He didn't even know how well the cub could fit, much less.

"Got it!" Ori replied eagerly and shoved himself into the hollow log. Finding there was barely enough room to even sit in it, he was forced to crawl back out and go in backwards so that he would be facing the opening. He was pretty excited about the whole thing. Not so much about the killing part but he had practically blocked that part out of his mind and forgotten that was what he was supposed to be doing, that that was the whole point.

Radi "harrrumph"ed again at the cub's excitement, feeling the child's under-appreciation of this event. Quite sure, however, that the cub would not be leaving the log any time soon, he picked a direction and followed it, giving a haughty gaze over his shoulder in case the lioness was watching. He soon came across a hare half-frightened but half-curious of the hoof-beats created by Radi's trot. Radi looked down at the creature and mustered up a sympathetic, sad look.

"Silly Hare, what are you doing so far from your hole? There is a lion in the distance sure to make you into a nice little snack."

"oh lions do not eat me. No they do not. I am not tasty, no I am not." the hare replied with a nod.

Radi tried not to look upset about the hare's annoying speech pattern. "Oh you silly hare, this lion delights in killing hares and listening to mournful squeals. And he will surely find you because he has picked up my scent. But if you hurry and come to your senses, Hare, I will show you a nice place to hide."

Something in his voice must have convinced the hare for it barely surpressed a shiver. "I do not want to die, no I do not. Show me the way?"

With a nod, Radi led the hare to the log and gestured at it with an extended hoof. "In there he cannot get to you. Too small for one of his size."

"Oh thank you!" said the hare. "Death is not friendly, no it is not."

Ori began to get bored waiting in the log. His excitement died and there wasn't much to do. There wasn't any room to move or anything to stare at. If there were bugs, none could crawl on him for there was no space between the inside of the log walls and him. He pouted and crossing his paws, placed his head on them to rest. It was too cramped to be comfortable but it would have to do.

Once he began to doze, a dark shape appeared at the entrance and then he heard the scrape of claws as it came in. Its breathing was fast and it seemed to be twitching. This was for him. In his dozed state, his hunger and animalistic nature came to life. He wanted to eat it.

Radi smiled with satisfaction as the hare ran into the hole and looking up at the sky with an almost innocent expression, he plopped his bum right into the opening of the log so that it was successfully blocked off. If the cub couldn't kill it, then he was hopeless.

Ori licked his lips and was so used to the darkness inside the log that when its entrance was blocked off, he was not daunted. The creature squealed and moved to try to get out but Ori was not going to let that happen. He reached forward and with a swift stroke, claimed it.

After successfully killing the creature, Ori and Radi returned to Laini in triumph. "Lookit, lookit!" Ori exclaimed after dropping the bloody hare at her feet. "I got it all by myself!" He didn't notice the look from Radi nor the consciousness in this moment to remember that Radi had helped him.
"I'm a hunter now!"

After waiting patiently, the fruits of her labors paid off. Ori and the waterbuck returned successfully. She smiled down at her son as he triumphantly presented his first kill. "Yes, my son. You are a hunter."

There were unspoken words that hung in the air then that both the waterbuck and she understood. That he might never be a hunter by himself. But she didn't have the guts to tell him that. No, he would have to find out for himself. ...or not at all.
