As Memory stepped up to nuzzle Draven, Trev stood as he was; he wasn't an overly demonstrative stallion, after all...except maybe where his mother and sister were concerned. If anything, he was quite certain that Draven would die of shock if he attempted to nuzzle him in greeting; he hadn't done that since before the first run-in with JC. But as he stood there, there was a look of quiet happiness in Trev's dark eyes, a happiness that said more than any gesture ever could.
Though he had to quit with such thoughts, otherwise he'd get maudlin. "It sure seems to look that way, doesn't it? Though if what I've seen is all the world has to offer, I think that somewhere along the line I was grossly mislead." With that and a grin, Trev turned his attention briefly towards the direction of their cave, then looked back at Draven. If he was here, then... "Is Mother in the cave? Or did we manage to make it back when she's out on one of her wanderings?"

"The world has just as many bads as it has goods, Trev... Never forget that." He nodded slowly, facial features taking on their usual somber expression once more as he addressed the tan stallion, momentarily letting Trev's question slide. "... Did either your mother or I ever tell you the story of how our paths came to cross?"
"I... Remember bits and pieces, I think. From mother... When I asked her how she made her first friends." She nodded slowly, feeling very young once again.

...Ok then. Trev couldn't help but frown slightly at Draven's question, feeling that there was something a little bit strange about Draven's sudden foray into the realm of nostalgia. Trev had never known Draven to voluntarily bring up such stories...unless there was a lesson to be learned.
That knowledge automatically made Trev warily. Why were they being taught a lesson so soon after coming home? That seemed rather odd.
Then again, maybe he was just being paranoid. It had been a while since they'd been home, so maybe it was just the time lapsed that made him think such things. Draven probably had a reason, that should be enough for him.
Still, he was a little bit guarded when he replied, "Actually...I'm not sure if I ever did. I suppose I always took your friendship as an established thing." After all, Draven had been around as long as HE could remember.

"I first met your mother on a dark night not far from here... There was something about her; something I couldn't quite put my hoof on." He paused for a moment, a slight smile curving his lips as he closed his eyes. "That difference made her a radiant light in the darkness; her own darkness, my darkness, the darkness of the night... She was, at that moment, where she was needed to be, just as she has been every moment since then... Including this moment."
Her brow furrowed slightly as she glanced towards the cave, expecting her mother to emerge just as if she were waiting for Draven to introduce her. Where else would she be needed other than here with her family?
When she didn't come out at that instant she turned her head back towards the dark stallion. "... Draven, where is Mother?"

Trev wasn't sure what he was supposed to say. How did one respond to a statement as cryptic as Draven's account of his first meeting with Nostalgia? It made no sense on it's own, and he couldn't place the relevance of it to save his soul.
Well, not until Memory's question and his own earlier question set the statement in context. No, something wasn't right here, something at all.
Stepping up beside Memory, Trev looked square into the older stallion's eyes. "Draven, what are you saying? Why are you telling us this?"

He tilted his head up as he listened to their questions, opening his eyes to look up at the sky. He had always found answers of some sort in the sky... Would they be there now as they always had been?
Taking a deep breath he lowered his gaze, looking first to Memory and then to Trevalyn. "I am telling you this because your Mother asked me to... I don't know where she is; where she went or where she could be going... Only that she went there because she was needed, as she has always done."
She stepped back, finding herself uncertain as if the ground was shifting beneath her. She shook her head. No... That wasn't something that Mother would d-- No, it was. It truly was. "She'll... Come back. With stories to tell us... Just like the stories she's always told. She'll come back and, when she does, we'll be here waiting for her... Because we need her too; not as much as we did when we were little and maybe a little less now that we're grown up... But we still do, Draven. Others can't keep her forever."

At first, Draven's words took a moment to actually register. He was expecting something unpleasant to have happened just from the way that Draven was acting, but to hear that unpleasant news delivered in such a mild and matter-of-fact way...his mind was literally reeling.
He knew of his mother's 'uniqueness', had known of it before he was old enough to even know what that uniqueness meant, but he still couldn't believe this, couldn't process this. She'd left them; his mother, his rock, the one who had been there for he and Memory through thick and thin in spite of facing numerous hardships along the way...she was gone? She'd just left, without any personal word?
He was vaguely aware that Memory was speaking, but what those words were was beyond him. Trev had turned slightly, looking intently out into the trees without seeing a single one as he tried very, very hard to accept one single fact: his mother was gone.

"She will come back... Won't she, Draven?" She knew that her mother wasn't gone for good. She couldn't be... Not when things were finally starting to look up; not when she'd made friends and met her sister. "... Won't she?"
He stepped up, brushing his nose against Memory's cheek before looking towards the younger stallion. "She'll be back... The Past never leaves us. It lingers in our hearts and it finds ways to visit us again. She'll be back."

It all made sense. What Draven was saying, the circumstances, Nostalgia's behavior...it all made sense, fitting in with what Trev had always known about his mother. And Memory was right; they were grown adults now, off living their own lives; they weren't even around the homeplace all the time, after all. Still, knowing that she'd be home, that's she'd be there...that had always been a qiet, comforting thought. The sort of thing that you'd look forward to coming home for.
Sighing, Trev turned to look at his sister and Draven, his expression somber as he tried not to feel too discouraged. Draven was right, it wasn't like a final parting or anything. "Well...I hope that whereever she is, those she is helping are appreciative. And that she's ok."

She stepped closer to her brother, giving his shoulder a light nudge with her nose. "It'll be all right, Trev. You still have me... And Draven... And whatever adventures you've been having outside of this little glen. When Mother comes back we'll have all sorts of stories to tell!"
He took a deep breath, releasing it slowly as he closed his eyes to listen to Memory chatter on. Stories... Yes, there would be many stories to tell and, wherever she was, he hoped that Nostalgia knew she would always be welcomed back home.

Having Memory be the 'strong one' was a strange state of affairs, but Trev wasn't so caught up in the idea of always being the strong one that he couldn't let memory be tough for both of them this time. Honestly, he didn't feel that cheerful about this whole thing...
But she was right. Managing to return the nudge with a half-grin, Trev gave his sister a nod. "You're right, Mems; this way, we'll ALL have something to tell next time we get together, right? Who knows, maybe we'll even be able to one-up Mom and Draven for once!"

"That's the spirit." She grinned, giving her head a light toss. "We'll go off and have our great adventures and we'll be able to tell Mother the best stories ever... Stories that'll go right up there next to all of the ones that she and Draven have told us."
