Dahlia listened to him speak, a strange feeling in her tummy like butterflies flying around in there. “Wow, you talk real nice,” she said, then regretted it because it sounded pretty dumb once she did. “Erm, I mean....trust you?” She swallowed, “You seem capable.” She smiled, her body rubbing ever-so-slightly against his as they walked close together, “Should I, or shouldn't I?”

Aureate chuckled softly, bowing his head faintly. "I speak as I feel, lovely Lady... There is much music in my family, Song is one of my delights... I adore singing, and exploring... And I will lead and protect you, never fear... Yes, I like to think you would trust me..." He nosed her again and gently brushed her with a big black and gold wing, rumbling happily in his chest. "This way..." Winding amongst the darker of the trees, Aureate sighed. Soon they would be too close for he and Dahlia to walk side by side, and he would be forced to fold his wings and lead rather than escourt her through the maze of trees... But the cave at the end... That he hoped she would enjoy.

Dahlia was beginning to really enjoy the feel of his soft feathers on her back, but the trees got thicker as they approached the foot of the mountains. “My dad Xandir likes to sing,” she said with a smile. “But he's not... very good. Not like you.” She stayed close to him, so even when he was forced to fold his wings, she was still able to feel them against her side as she walked by him. “Maybe one day after the caves I can show you where I like, way up on the mountain. Its hard to get up there sometimes, but you shouldn't have any problems since you can fly.”

Aureate considered her with a smile. "You've never even heard me sing, My Lady Dahlia... But I thank you for the sentiment... Perhaps, when you show me this place, I shall sing to you..." He sighed as the trees narrowed more. "It gets tight for a bit, but then we'll be able to walk side by side again..." He nosed her cheek with a soft sigh, and then pranced forward, bowing his head to pass under a low-hanging branch. "Watch your head..."

“I look forward to it,” she said at his invitation of a serenade. She nodded, somehow disappointed when she help back to let him walk ahead. The low-hanging branches were beginning to get caught in her long mane and she tossed her head to and fro trying to tame it once again.
Though she preferred walking side by side, Dahlia really couldn’t complain much about the view following behind Aureate. She noticed her eyes lingering on the muscles of his legs as he maneuvered on the increasingly rocky ground. So much so, that her head connected hard with one of the low hanging branches he had tried to warn her about. She gave a cry of surprise, backpedaling, before sinking her head down in embarrassment.

Spinning in such a tight place should have been impossible for a winged stallion, but some how Aureate managed it. Nearly sitting on his hindquarters, he stepped back toward Dahlia, whickering in concern. "Are you alright?" He asked softly, nuzzling her. "I am so sorry..."

Dahlia flinched away from his touch, her whole face aflame with embarrassment. That, coupled with the sting of the conk of her head made her eyes water. “I'm okay,” she squeaked out, her voice cracking. “I'm sorry, that was so clumsy of me.”

"Come on, just a little bit farther, and there's water... You can wash your face..." Aureate murmured. "And it was just an accident... Are you alright?"

Dahlia shook her head, trying to clear it. She gave a small nod, her face still burning from embarrassment. “Okay,” she mumbled. She took several deep breaths, centering herself and trying to hold her head up high, brushing it off. “I’ll be fine,” she said in the most convincing voice she could muster.

Aureate smiled gently at her, lifing a wing to raise the branches. "Here... Try this way, hmmm?" Perhaps he should see if there was a way to move them all out of the path, he certainly didn't want Dahlia hurting herself... And she was far to pretty to cry. Aureate was a firm believer that no mare should EVER have a reason to cry.. Unless -maybe- they were tears of joy... But to see the expression on Dahlia's face pained him, and he nuzzled her again, singing a soft song as sweetly as he could. "In the springtime of the year, When the trees are crowned with leaves, When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew, Are dressed in ribbons fair.
When owls call the breathless moon, in the blue veil of the night When shadows of the trees appear, amidst the lantern's light.
We've been rambling all the night, and sometime of this day Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay.
Who will go down to those shady groves, and summon the shadows there? And tie a ribbon on those sheltering arms, in the springtime of the year.
The sounds of birds seem to fill the wood, and when the fiddler plays All their voices can be heard, long past their woodland days.
We've been rambling all the night, and sometime of this day Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay.
And so they linked their hands and danced, 'round in circles and in rows And so the journey of the night descends, when all the shades are gone.
A garland gay we bring you here, And at your door we stand Here's a sprout, well budded out, The work of our Lord's hand.
We've been rambling all the night, and sometime of this day Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay."

The throbbing in Dahlia’s ears melted away as she listened to his song, the feel of his muzzle nuzzling against her face made her knees weak, but this time it was certainly not from pain. The pain ebbed quickly away as she listened to his song, fading into the back of her mind as a slight discomfort. She found herself for the first time nuzzling back, leaning into his touch as she followed his lead through the trees.

Aureate continued to sing softly as he led her on through the woods, content to shield her with a wing and keep her close to his side. The markings of feathers around her eyes were like her own mask, and he wondered faintly what thoughts she hid behind it... And what secrets the masks on his family hid. "Here we are..." He murmured as they returned to a wider path, the branches far overhead no longer a danger... "Just around the corner up here..."

Dahlia began to relax again, her spirits lifted and some again looking forward to exploring the cave. She kept close by his side and began to hum along softly to his song. “See, I was right about your voice,” she finally spoke when she had confidence in her voice again, “it is beautiful.”

Winding the melody into a final trill of notes, Aureate finished his song with a shy smile. He was blushing beneath his dark coat, glad she couldn't see it. "I thank you, Lady Dahlia.. I am, glad it pleases you..." He murmured, almost sad when they reached the cave's entrance... "Would you like to go first? The entry is rather narrow, but it turns a corner and widens, and then we may walk abreast once more..." And then she would see the crystals in the cave, and he hoped she would be impressed.

“Yes yes!” she said excitedly, slipping ahead of Aureate and cautiously, but quickly, heading towards the entrance. She was extra mindful of her head, looking over her shoulder just to confirm he was right behind her right before she started in. She was still skinny, so she slipped in fairly easily, and as soon as the cave widened she waited for Aure. A glimmer in the dark caught her eye, and her curiosity perked, but she made herself wait.
