Blue OctoberTonight was the night. This would be the great solution to all my waiting and all my suffering. It was the night of the October harvest dance, and though it was not called the Halloween dance, as it rightfully should have been, it was in fact a costume dance.
I had been adorning myself and my already fabulous costume since six o'clock, and I was sure that tonight I would finally win the affections of my long-beloved hero, Josh Johansen. Now, at five-after-nine, surely beautiful and fashionably late, I entered through the doors of my school and prepared to dazzle the audience. I was immediately greeted by my closest friend, Karen.
"Wow, Andy," she started, "you look amazing! I love what you did with your hair!"
"I just straightened it, Karen. I do it all the time at school. Thank you, though." I ran over her appearance to find something to say back. She wore midnight-wash blue jeans under a blue and white "Swiss-miss" costume. Her wavy corn-yellow hair was in matching braids. "Good job with your hair. It really matches the costume."
"Oh my god!" Someone shrieked from the staircase to my left. "Andy, I love your dress!"
I whirled to see who had been speaking, but I could already tell by her voice that it was Clarice. She came bounding from the foot of the taped-off stairs, followed by Harriot. Thier fairy-wings glittered in the dim light.
"Thank you."
"You really dressed up!"
"Well, you know how I love Halloween..." I sang. "Hey, where's everyone else?"
"Bianca and Ariana are on the dance floor, but the boys are behind the curtain."
She was referring to Kent, Conner, and of course, Josh. "Elaine isn't here?"
"She never comes to these things, Andy. You know that. Oh, and Christian's here, too." Harriot blushed at the sound of his name comming from her mouth. "I love when he visits. He's so funny. I wish you could have gotten to know him a little better while he was here."
"Yeah, alright," I sighed, wanting to get away, and with that I went back to talk to Josh.
* * *
It was 11:30, and time for another slow song.
Everyone sat around a table behind the black curtain. Everybody came back here when they weren't asked to dance. We were all here, the ten of us all squeezed around this lunch table.
"Isn't anybody going to dance?" Bianca inquired. Nobody answered.
Clarice sighed. "Nobody wants to."
Then, as if in defiance to Clarice, Josh stood. "I do."
It was the moment I had waited for: Josh was about to ask me to dance. Me, who had never so much as had anybody express any true interest in me, was about to alltogether win the greatest prize in the universe: the love of my love. I was sure of it. Hadn't it been me who he seemed to always want to sit next to at lunch, who he constantly teased in all our shared classes? Surely, he was about t ask me.
Time seemed to slow down to about one half of its normal speed. I saw Josh pivot and stare right at me. His lips parted, and his sleek glasses fogged up only a little. Then, he spoke those fatal words. "Would you like to dance with me?"
It was better than I could have ever imagined it, the sweet sound of his deep voice echoing my greatest dream. I opened my mouth to answer, when Ariana answered in my place. "Sure!"
I sat there, screaming in my mind,
Tell her you were talking to me! You had to be! Weren't you?But he didn't say it. He took her thick-fingered hand and smiled that enchanting smile. He hadn't asked me, he had asked Ariana, and I had been dumb enough to make that mistake. Within an instant, they were on the other side of the black curtain, embracing. I wanted to cry, but I couldn't not here.
"I'll be back," I croaked, and I ran.
I ran as fast as my tired, shuddering legs would allow, every few feet stumbling, but getting right back up again. I had to make it to where I was going. The restroom door flapped open before me, and slammed shut behind me. Only here, in complete privacy, could I let out my true feelings.
I sobbed. Hot, salty tears flowed freely down my face, staining my gown. "O-o-of c-course he didn't ask m-m-me," I stuttered. "How c-c-could I ever compete with Ariana? She's just what he wants." What had once been a magical night had in only a minute become a horrible nightmare.
