This is probably a horribly stupid question, but I feel I must ask, anyway. In some fansubs my friend sent me, when a character goes "Hai" (spelling? sweatdrop ) it *usually* says" Yes" in the English subtitles, but sometimes, the character will put more emphasis on the "Hai" or make it sound more, er, serious (is having trouble explaining...) and in the English subtitles it'll say "Of course," or "Yes, sir." I was just wondering--am I just not hearing what's after/before the "Hai" (I haven't exactly seen a lot of fansubs and I've only just noticed this) or does the meaning of "Hai" just depend on the way it's being said? OMG, I feel so stupid. I could probably just go and look it up, but I saw this thread and figured, "Why not just ask someone who actually knows Japanese?" Anyway, thanks in advance! (Or should I be saying "Arigatou" here? Ehehe? sweatdrop )

It's just a nuance, I suppose. Hai does mean "yes", but sometimes it's more appropriate to use other, similar phrases.

"Hai" just means yes. They put extra stuff in the subtitles to make it sound more smooth sounding (If you get what I'm saying.) I think it might depend on the way they say it also, and what they're responding to.

'Kimi no koto ga suki desu' works, too. ^^
Basically, lots of ways of saying it. Depends on whether you're confessing, or you're just saying 'I love you' to your significant other. ^_^
