She sighed, nodding. Paradise. The jungle was a paradise, it was where a leopard belonged! This flat, empty land was not beautiful enough for a leopard, offered them no chance to sleep in a tree, fearless of what was going on around them.
She noticed that Mezi seemed to have cheered up a lot since she had first bumped into him and felt happier for it. If their meting had brought him a smile then she was thankful they had met. She looked at him, at his purple fur, the dash of white fur on his neck. He certainly was a handsome hybrid even if he didn't think so himself.
"You'll probably find me around the same place when we met before. I adopted that as my home for a long time. Do you remember the place? With the stream?" A stream wasn't the best indicator, but a leopard was a good navigator, she was sure Mezi would remember. "It'd be good if we could meet up. One thing about the trees is that they hide potential friends." She flicked her tail. "It's horrible to be lonely, so you must visit me!" She leaned forward, buffeted her head against his shoulder. "Okay?"

The Jungle was beyond paradise for Mezi. It was like a paradise sanctuary. He felt like he had been away from it for a century and a half, and it was slowly eating him away. He and his siblings needed to get this business with their dad over, and soon. He wanted to get back home more than anything. He was a bit concerned about seeing Mleli again once he got back, but he was also sure that somewhere down in that leopardess's heart was the motherly feelings that she must have. Or, maybe he was just telling himself that so going back would be easier.
Mezi nodded and smiled, closing his eyes. He could picture the stream perfectly. So many flowers grew by it. The fact that Hera was now calling it home made it sound prettier. "You live near the flowers, then. Fitting." He winked. Then the fact that he didn't have his own tree hit him very hard. His eyes widened a little, and his expression went blank for a few seconds. He quickly got over it and went back to smiling at Hera, but it was going to be nagging at him until he got home, that was certain. He needed to stake out his own tree. Someplace near a lot of flowers... "It'll be the first place I go when I get back." That'd be a lot better than going straight back to his mom. "And I'll make sure you aren't lonely." He smiled at her, figuring he could drop by more than once when he got back to the jungle.

She smiled, overjoyed. Here was her best friend and here he was telling her that he'd be sure to come and visit her. She purred, loudly, deeply, let the warmth of those words touch her heart, linger in her soul.
This was the reason why she had left her home. To find friends, new and old. And here one was. Her wish had been answered.
She stood, swivvelled around to face him, looking at him with her golden eyes. The imprint of the white heart on her forehead was as clean and pure as her own. She would never be tainted, this one, too caring, too lovingly.
"Thank you Mezi. I don't think you'll ever realise how much that means to me." She leaned forwards, almost as if she intended touching noses with him. Then, thinking better of it, she lowered her head, brushed it up beneath his chin.
She knew their meeting was coming to an end and after a breath she took a few steps back. "But promise me something Mezi. When I'm gone, keep that smile, okay? Keep it in your heart even if it isn't worn on your face."

Mezi really didn't realise how much such a thing as visiting could mean to her. Having a completed shot self esteem at the time, he didn't think he was worth much to anyone, and he didn't think his friendship was anything to be valued. Especially for a leopardess like Hera. She was so caring and sweet. She really did remind Mezi of his sister, which he actually liked, since his sister was the sibling he felt closest to. He felt different about Hera, though. There were differences between his sister and the red female, besides the fact that Kafiri was half lion. There were a few personality differences, and then there was the biggie that Hera quite obviously liked living in the jungle. Mezi wasn't exactly sure if he could say the same for his sister.
For a moment, his eyes widened awkwardly and he stiffened slightly at Hera's touch. He wasn't used to any form of affection. Sure, his sister could get like this, but he just shrugged it off as his sister needing comfort because of their mother. Hera had other choices in the world for if she needed a gentle nudge or something similar. He got over the initial shock, though, and leaned into it. "No problem, Hera." He paused before promising, since life was such a drag at the time. Seeing her made things better, sure, but she was leaving. The fact that she was talking about it made it more real. Not that he had really expected her to stay in the savannah. "I promise."

Those two little words eased the aprehension in her heart. She could leave now - though she didn't want to - knowing that he'd be okay. That he'd try his best not to let things get too worked up in his mind.
She saw him now, not as a hybrid, not as a lion or a leopard or a god. He was simply Mezi, her friend and someone she cared deeply about. The tuft of fur on his neck meant nothing, besides he was a leopard at heart and Hera, who used her heart more than her mind, knew that this was the most important thing.
With a small purr of joy, Hera took a few steps back, hesitating, not sure whether now would be the right time. She could stay here with him, but no, he had things to do and so did she. She couldn't cling to something that was familiar all her life.
Besides, she'd meet him again in the jungle.
"Goodbye Mezi." She whispered and with a blink of her golden eyes she turned and loped off, not daring to look back in case she lost her nerve and returned to his side.
