Wyrsa savored the scent of her son's fear. It permeated the area and was so incredibly sweet. The mare cocked her head and studied the boy yet again. A tiny scrap of maternal instinct argued against attacking her own son, but dark gods of hell, she was a Skinwalker. Attacking her own flesh and blood was something that was second-nature to her. No little thing like instinct, no soft emotion like "love", was going to get in her way!

She was almost behind him when she finally struck. Somnium had just enough time to flinch before she hit him just beneath his left wing joint. One or more bones split with a satisfyingly sickening crack beneath her weight, and her fangs tore open a sufficiently large strip of flesh to insure that the boy would be some time in healing.

The mare chewed the hunk of flesh, considering the flavor. It did indeed have overtones of Tlocatl's flavor, yet another piece of proof. She largely ignored Somnium's painful whinnies as he sank to his knees.

Swallowing her mouthful, Wyrsa knelt down next to her son, who winced and tried to shift away from her. "I suggest," she told him, "that you go home now, or you may not be able to make it on your own. And do tell your father that Wyrsa hasn't forgotten what she told him last time, and that he should remember it as well." A nasty laugh followed her words as she rose.

Turning to leave, the Skinwalker looked back at her shaking, shivering Kalona son still kneeling on the forest floor. It was too much for her to resist. Wyrsa went back over, squarely behind him, and delivered a powerful kick that surprised him up and onto his feet. A calculated shove forced him forward, and Wyrsa shifted to her coyote form and melted away into the darkness of the night.

The tension beneath the trees was building to an almost unbearable level. And the absolute worst part was that Somnium knew there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. He could only stand there and keep an eye on his terrifying, circling mother.

When she did attack, it was still unexpected. A large part of the surprise was because the young Kalona had had no idea of how fast Skinwalkers were. The shock of the attack lasted a few seconds before being totally overwhelmed by the sheer pain. He had heard his own bones break, for gods' sakes! And, on top of that, she'd bitten off a chunk of his flesh from the same area!

The stallion had never before appreciated just how painful a wound could be. It was so intense that he felt he couldn't stand anymore. The shock and bloodloss forced him to his knees. And then she knelt down beside him! He whinnied his fear aloud, no longer trying to maintain appearances, and tried to move further away. And, dear gods above, she was still chewing on his flesh!

Then she swallowed and knelt so that her voice sounded right in his ear. The caressing tone, with its icy encasement, hurt his ear. He was embarrassingly relieved that she was actually letting him go, though the message didn't make as much sense to him as he assumed it would make to Tlocatl.

A flash of memory - when he'd been a foal, Tloc had had trouble with one of his wings. It had been stiff - healing from some injury. Somnium wondered if his mother had been the cause. With a force of will he wrenched his wandering attention back to the here-and-now where a Skinwalker was still in menacing distance of him. Though she was backing off now. The Kalona allowed himself a sigh of relief.

Just as he was releasing his breath, a well-aimed kick jolted the stallion back to his feet where he wobbled for a moment before regaining his equilibrium. Before he could react to that, a powerful shove forced him forward a few steps. After spending another few moments catching his balance once more, Somnium craned his neck around to look for his mother, but she had already vanished into the blackness of the forest.

Shaking his head at his earlier impetuous ideas, Somnium began the trip home, trying to ignore the pain in his wing and side, the fear-sweat that still coated him and the sheer amount of punishment he'd be in for when he got back to Sanika's teepee.
