"'Course he is," Diablerie put in with a very fake-sounding smile, almost simultaneously as Sanguine answered the question himself. "Scared of what, though?" Coming into the conversation, she didn't understand immediately what the centerpiece of the topic was- at least, not until she caught that goofy look on her brother's face, as he stared cross-eyed at the insect that was invading his personal space. And, if she wasn't mistaken, adoring it.

She didn't know whether to laugh, stare, or spit at the thing she was related to; torn between the three, she was forced to a disbelieving sigh. It could have almost have been mistaken for some odd form of affection, that sort of "oh, dear" expression between siblings.

Any mistaken suspicions of sisterly kindness were quickly dispelled when the filly reached out with those oh-so-busy teeth, grabbed the butterfly's wing, and violently thrashed her head to the side, treating the innocent insect like she considered herself to have been treated just moments before. She swung her head around once and then spat the thing on the ground, wing mangled and body dashed on the ground.

"There, see? I saved you!" Diablerie really should have been too young for sarcasm, shouldn't she have been?

Had Paroxysm not already made his Wind half very, very petulant, there probably would have been a loud outburst going on in his head. As it was, there seemed to be this shocked silence, and a sound, peculiarly like hmph. The stallion was sure he would hear more about it later, but for now, he looked, rather expressionlessly at the dead butterfly.

"Well, now it cannot eat you." That seemed to brighten him a bit, and he smiled at the filly. "Good job. I suppose you were not afraid."

Underneath all of Harbinger's young pompousness and puffed-up disdain, was a small affectionate feeling towards his strange and well-suited parents. Brushing his wings lightly along his mother's side, as close as he would get to such an affectionate gesture, he trotted over to see what his sister was doing to agitate his brother so much.

"Awwa, why'd you have to kill it so fast?!"

Staring at the mangled body of the butterfly in horrified dismay, Sanguine brought his nose down to it, nudging it slightly in the hopes that it would revive. It did not. "%#$@," he said tentatively, trying out one of mommy's special healing words. Nothing happened. "Oh no!" Apparently he wasn't enough of a unicorn that he could heal things like his momma did, and the bug would be dead forever. Drooping, feeling a pang of terrible guilt, the colt stood there in shocked shame as the butterfly slowly stopped moving entirely. "It died!" He was a complete and total failure as an alicorn, but maybe that was because he was so little. Nudging at the still body of the insect pathetically, the foal continued to try. Maybe, just maybe he'd be able to heal it if he kept on going. Maybe it took longer, if you were smaller.

With a snort of amusement, Vexation crossed over to her ma- to Paroxysm's side, and observed her three foals with a raised eyebrow. "Hmm... next time, we'll have to try a rabbit, Diablerie. I think you may just be large enough for one, yet." She couldn't quite figure out why Sanguine was making a fuss. Had he wanted to kill the butterfly? Clearly, Harbringer had wanted a hoof in the fun himself... which she approved of. That sort of hunting instinct would serve them well later on. They might be better off learning early. She vaguely recalled that her parents had started her at a young age, whether accidental or intentional.

"'Cause," the filly retorted to Harbinger, "I wouldn't want for you to come over and get spooked off by it, too!" She tapped one hoof against the ground soundly, counting off on her imaginary tally against her brother. She was on a roll today!

Smug in her father's praise and mother's attention, and twice as bolstered by the imagined envy of her brother (singular, since Sanguine was too busy being a baby to be properly jealous of his sister's hunting prowess), Diablerie felt well avenged for her indignity of moments before. Any dampening effect that Vexation's discipline had managed on her pride was quite neutralized, and she might have even found a small bit of forgiveness for her mother as she grinned up at her parents and picked up her front hooves excitedly. This had the unfortunate side effect of her stamping dangerously near Sanguine's face next to the butterfly, but for once, it seemed that this threat was wholly incidental. Her focus was only on her mother, and the excitement of her suggestion.

"When can we do that? I wanna go now!" Puffing her chest and tossing her head, she finally stopped dancing around on her hooves to stand straight and tall, hoping to demonstrate for her parents what a well-grown and capable individual she was. Persuasively, she suggested, "Y'don't have to worry 'bout Sang and Harbi, we can leave them behind!"

Rolling his eyes, Harbinger simply couldn't think of a snappy comeback. Honestly, sisters were SUCH trouble! And she got all the stupid attention too, which was ridiculous. Showy little..."#$@%^!!" He said, succinctly and firmly, calling her one of those words his mother was so fond of when hurt or annoyed. It seemed to get her attention so maybe...not like he cared.

Really.

Snorting a bit, he tried the same thing Vexation had earlier, snapping his tail and trying to lash it at Die at the same time. "As if! I run faster than you do, and one day, Imma fly away and leave you here by yourself!"

Paroxysm took this all rather in stride, by staying totally silent. He would, however, have to say at least something. If even the harmless little boy was using those words, it was perhaps time to head it off. Though he found it slightly charming and adorable...HAH! "Did I ask you?" You never ask, it is my job to give unsolicited commentary. You used to quite often, when *I* was in control. "Yes, pity that I am now. Shut UP."

The 'harmless little boy' would not object to being left out of a hunt. After all, even the butterfly's death would have had him in tears if he were a human. As it was, he was snuffling slightly, his tail dragging on the ground a little as he sat down in the soft moss that his mother had tossed his sister into. "I didn't mean to killed it..." he said pitifully, very sad that he had failed so terribly in his attempt to befriend the affectionate creature. Crestfallen, he put his head down to rest on his leg, ears drooping. Every now and again, they would twitch and swivel forward at something Habringer or Diablerie said, but for the most part they remained flat against his skull.

"Hmmn. I think it would be good for Habringer to come along as well, Diablerie. But I believe we will leave Sanguine at home for this one. I don't think he's ready yet." Perhaps she could leave him with Paro for awhile, or something, if Paro was up to it. Giving him a sidelong glance, she checked to make sure that the idea was alright with him. It was always best to check with one's other half before forging forward. Not that that had stopped a great many Kalona in the past, but she prided herself on being an individual. And for planning ahead. "I believe you will both be well suited to the pouncing involved with catching rabbits, and perhaps mice as well... though they are quite fast." Pursing her lips, she considered her daughter's question. "We could go today, if all are agreed."

"Today!" She agreed in happy exclaim. There was no hiding her excitement; Diablerie exploded into action once more, straining her neck eagerly to bump up against her mother's chin. This was a bit of a difficult maneuver, and somewhat clumsy as well for the young filly; however, she carried it off as gracefully as she could manage, then settled for a lower target to bump her head against. She wasn't being a little suck-up at all, nooo....

Harbi spared a glance at his brother, who seemed to be snuffling in the weeds, over the dead bug. He rolled his eyes, snorted, and lashed his tail out again, trying to trip Little Miss Suck Up as she rammed into their poor mother over and over.

"No wonder how you got such a funny-lookin' head. All that ramming it up against mom made you dumb AND ugly!" It was a baby insult, for a baby colt, but it was really the best he could do. He was not one for witty repartee, and was content to simply roll his eyes, grimace, sneer, and glare.

Like a real stallion!

"I wanna go today, mother, please take me!"

"Very well... if you father will remain here to watch Sanguine, I will take you both hunting. How does that sound?" Just to see her little ones get all giddy, she would very happily take them hunting. "What shall we try first? Mice or rabbits... if Paroxysm says yes?" He deserved to have the children whining and generally being energetic in his direction for once. She had had to deal with a number of their exploits so far, and she felt it fair that he take up a little more of the parental burden for a bit given that she was the one who was going to give them hunting lessons. Really, they were utterly adorable, the two troublemakers falling all over themselves at the idea of a field trip.

Perking up very slightly at the thought of getting to spend even more time with his daddy, Sanguine raised his head, innocent red eyes focusing on his mother. It didn't hurt his feelings that she didn't want to take him along. Not really. He probably just wasn't big enough to go hunting, like he wasn't big enough to heal the bug. Maybe someday, he could come along, and even get some grass! That was an exciting thought, for, after all grass was what they ate. Right?

The filly stumbled over the tail, butting her head into her mother's forelegs a good deal harder than she'd really intended. "Hey! Watch it, buttface!" Making a sour face in the direction of her brother, Diablerie aimed a lazy kick back in his direction. But she was far too excited about the potential of their first real hunting trip to be bothered by his taunting. Pulling her head up haughtily, she radiated airs of being far too mature to be taken in by him, and swiveled her sharp red gaze around to address the person who really mattered at that instant- her father.

"Daaaaaddy," she began, her voice turning sugar sweet as if with the flick of a switch. "We can go hunting, right? I'll make sure that Harbinger doesn't get into trouble, promise!" In what she was convinced must be a subtle gesture, her own tail went out to try and slap at her brother's flank.

Chuckling, he raised one eyebrow at his daughter's quickly changing expressions and mannerisms. He was two-faced enough himself to understand that under the sweetness was a girl laced with vituperation. He was not blind, and had seen the strike. It amused him, and he leaned down to nudge at both with his velvety nose.

"I do not mind, I enjoy Sanguine's company. Perhaps we can find a good place to rest, when you return from the hunt, and a fair place to eat quietly." That was important, as there were many small predators who would steal a meal from under your jaws, if you were not lucky. It was not such a problem for the larger Soquili, but the younger ones would lose their meals.

Snarling, Harbinger finally gave in and closed his teeth around the air next to his sister's ear. "Next time I won't miss!" he threatened, the red splatters around his mouth glowing in the midafternoon sun. Turning his back on his father and siblings, he waited eagerly. "Now we go?"

"Alright, children, now... settle down. We'll need to be quiet if we're hunting prey," Vexation said in a conspiratorial tone. "Be very, very quiet. Rabbits have excellent hearing, as good as ours if not better. Come along now." Stalking as gracefully as a four footed, heavy animal could, she led her two enthusiastic children off into the brush. "Now, it would be best if you remained hidden by something, the grass perhaps, or a bush or tree." Or even a rock, if they were lucky enough. "Since you're both small, you will find it easier to hide." But fortunately, the grass was tall enough in places that she herself could find cover. Kneeling down, and putting an ear to the ground, she listened for the sound of the burrowing creatures. "There. Up ahead... there's a warren there, or should be. Hush now."

Daddy liked to be around him? Perking up even more at his father's words, Sanguine picked himself up, his tail flagging, and pranced about Paroxysm. "Yeah, we can find somewhere to rest!" That would be great! Then mama might be happy with them, and even Diablerie and Habringer couldn't really complain. Could they? Indeed not! Very seriously, he pranced off in the direction of shade, or at least where he remembered shade had been last time. Somewhere nice, somewhere quiet. "Daddy, what about the ones with the pools?" Nice and quiet, with water, too.

As they were led off to their first hunt, Diablerie was full of vigor and anticipation. "Bet I'll catch a bigger rabbit than you!" she teased her brother in a hiss, running ahead of him flicking her tail playfully in his face before giggling and bounding ahead. Tossing her head over her shoulder, she gave him a sharp-toothed grin and added with a loud whisper, "If you can even catch one."

Playtime was abruptly ended, however, and Diablerie quieted down almost instantly to listen to her mother's explanation. The filly might be nearly impossible to control at most times, but this was business, and she intended to get it right; she already had a dream of the creature she meant to catch, a hulking, fatty white rabbit nearly half her size, as heavy as she could carry, more than she could eat! Which wasn't to say that she'd share, of course; oh, no, not when her brother came back from the hunt empty-handed. She'd eat her fill, and then take the rest back to the brother left behind, to watch his reaction to her momentous kill, soak in the praise from her father for being such a good hunter--

Ack! She was getting ahead of herself, though. First, she had to find and kill her rabbit. Dropping as close to the ground as she could manage, Diablerie licked at her lips and watched her mother closely, waiting for some signal for what they should do next.
