Rowan inclines his head. "Thank you, I'm rather proud of him myself. I keep him around to be a second pair of eyes when I hunt... And to talk. I picked him because he's a good talker, for a Mus. And he's rather patient, so that fits me great. He's playful..."

Oblivious to Rowan's praise, the Mus is overjoyed at the attention he's getting from the small white flyer. He pats a bit of Rowan's feathers and says. "Moth! Sit! He nice! Won't eat."

"... And he's generous." Rowan concludes. And hangs his head a little in defeat, he doesn't think the Chirop will take the Mus' invitation, but if it does, he won't resist. And he's not even hungry.

As Rowan had expected, Moth did not accept Berr's generous invitation. Instead, she flits about the pair again, prods the mus playfully with a wing, then darts back towards her Master. He was her responsibility, so to speak, and she took that very seriously for a companion.

Odd chuckled softly. "So I see. If you do decide to become a breeder, he'd be a very nice stud." He preened his chestfeathers again carefully as Moth landed against his side. Her dark beady eyes fell back on the mus and she gave him another playful squeak.

"They seem to get along quite nicely, eh?"

The Mus batted his paws playfully at the pale Chirop as she poked him and stared with wide-eyed wonder at it, she was awesome! And if she didn't want to sit, then it's her loss.

Rowan shook his head, unconciously mimicking the gesture Odd had made a moment ago. "Hmm... Well... That's a good point. How about it, Berr? Would you like to be a stud?" The Mus puffed it's chest out and looked proud. "I'll take that as a yes."

"Yeah, they do seem to get along well. That's good." Rowan preens his chest a little before continuing.

"How would I go about Keeping, then?" Berr is stepping around on Rowan's head and waving at the chirop, lightly jumping on his masters head. Who doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

"Well... I just sort of jumped in." Odd gave a slight grin and a nod.

"Not exactly the best method for beginning, but then again, I had a good bit of trouble finding a mentor in the area. Your best bet would be to head into Deep Woods. See if you can find another keeper in the area, or at least word of one by speaking to other sentinels. Maybe you can find a mus keeper that could teach you the ropes?" It was the best thing the aberrant could think of, although he could not take his own offered advice.

Moth tilted her head as she observed the funny little mus's antics on Rowan's head. She lifted a wing and waved a little claw at the mus, mimicking him, before squeaking again.

"Mmm... Fair enough." Rowan pauses for a bit as his Mus accidentaly steps a bit too close to his eye and he closes it until the small companion moves away. He continues like nothing happened.

"I'll definately consider it. As I said, having a constant source of food must be practical." Rowan forgets to mention 'the good of the clan' this time.

"And I suppose I wouldn't mind having a few more of the small tykes running about." His voice is laced with a bit of affection for the Mus currently running from one shoulder to the other, peeking out at Odd and Moth on the right side of Rowan's head, the left... The right... "I really need the energy he rubs off." Rowan sighs lightly.

"It'd be more than just a few little ones." Odd laughed heartily in response to Rowan and seemed to be in a much better mood. He was glad his luck was taking a small turn for the good this evening. He did seem compassionate enough towards his own mus to be a keeper. Most sentinels observed their mus as nothing more than tools.

"I think we could all use a little of that... With the exception of fledglings. The little ones are rambunctious enough as it is!"

"Heh, yeah. You're right." Rowan cranes his head and preens his Mus behind the ear a bit, and Berr is very, very still while this happens. Then he runs up on Rowan's head again and snuggles into his feathers.

"Maybe I could raise energetic Mus companions for lonely Sentinels... I need to give this serious thought." Rowan looks thoughtful. "I'd need to seek out another Mus Keeper and get myself another one of these." He indicates his companion. "But I'll consider it, definately."

"I'm also considering being a Minder, I can see myself raising young ones and teaching them to fly, definately."

"That's a lot of work, too, I bet." Odd Winter hooted quietly after Rowan had finished speaking. "There are a lot of choices out there, but don't choose too quickly. You'll end up task hopping, like me." He sounded slightly amused as he spoke.

"So it might be good if you take Watching seriously and continue with asking around. I'm sure the Minder's Enclave will gladly accept you, if you chose to mind. There are many good sentinels there, especially Typhoon. He's not at the main Enclave, though. He's a little ways off. Swell old guy. I bet you'd like him." The aberrant advised sincerely. The Enclave was full of rather good minders, though he in particular did not like many of them due to circumstances in his youth.

Rowan remained quiet as Odd spoke, paying attention to what he was saying. His Mus sits on his head, snuggled up into his feathers and looking very pleased.

"Task hopping?" He asks. "What were you before?"

"Typhoon, Typhoon..." Rowan looks to the side a bit and thinks. "It sounds familiar... But I've met a lot of Minders in my days. I... I'm not sure I know who he is. Not from the top of my feathers, at least."

"Besides, maybe task hopping is not such a bad idea? I could find out what I'm best suited for that way. Though you're too right, there are many choices... I just want to help the clan." Rowan's voice remains rather neutral and few emotions are betrayed by his body language. Now that he's lightened the mood, he's relaxing a bit.

"Medic." He responded simply and to the point. He didin't really wish to elaborate on the fact and he actually sort of regretted bringing it up. He had been a fool to think that sick and injured sentinels would want to seek him, of all others, out for help.

He hesitated before speaking and was relieved as Rowan continued to talk. He hoped he would not have to talk about why he was no longer a medic, for that would seem rather obvious and he did not want to talk about it.

"Typhoon is a swell old guy. Mayhap you should seek him out some night. He might have you watch some fluffs with him, if he's got his talons full. It'd be good experience." He suggested in earnest as he ran his pale beak through his white feathers.

"And most tasks will help the clan, especially if you put your whole into it... There are always fluffs to be watched, platforms to be filled, fledglings to teach. You have a bright future, I think."

Again, Rowan stayed quiet and listened, then spoke up.

"Bright future? You mean that? Thanks." He smiles at Odd warmly and relaxes even more, settling down on his perch conently.

"You're alright, Winter." He says earnestly. "And I guess you have a point. The thing is deciding what I want to do, that won't be too easy. So much to do..."

Berr, still lying on his masters head perks up and looks at Odd with happy eyes. But then he is distracted by the pale Chirop and tries to get it's attention again, standing on his hind legs and looking intently at her.

"You're alright, Winter."

Odd was slightly taken aback by this. It was extremely rare that he met this much hospitality, especially from a Wildtype. While he appeared to be relaxed, he worried that there was something different running through the other sentinel's mind. Maybe Rowan really hated him, that seemed like it would be more likely. Suddenly the aberrant wanted to be far gone, away from the situation.

Thoughts of past encounters, particularly with Wildtypes and Deep Woods sentinels, haunted the large, white aberrant.

"You're different... It doesn't bother you? Me, I mean."

"I... Umm..." Rowan tenses up and seems to be at a loss for words for a bit and, mirroring his master, Berr lies down and cowers. This was new and he did not know how Rowan would react. A few moments pass before the Wildtype finds his tongue again.

"No... Or at least I try to not let it bother me." More to himself then to Odd, he then adds under his breath but loudly enough to be heard. "I swore to myself I'd not judge people based on the colour of their feathers..." Looking directly ay Odd again, he continues in his normal tone. "You're an alright guy and you're a good member of the clan, I have no reason to dislike you... and honestly, have you ever 'infected' anyone?"

"That being said, This may not be the most comfortable moment of my life. But it's not so bad."

Rowan stays put, afraid that to get any closer would be interpreted as threatening and that is not what he is trying to be.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 13, 2008 10:11 am

"Well... No, not really. There is only one other with the white sickness, and I've only seen glimpses of her. Never even been close." The Keeper replied sheepishly and lowered his pale eyes to his talons.

"Despite that, rumors run rampant. Fear of the unknown runs high in most sentinels." He found himself at a loss for words. The sheer fact that Rowan seemed more understanding than most was at least a little bit comforting, but this Wildtype was a rarity in the forest.

"You are a good sentinel, Rowan. You are braver than most."

"Uh... Thanks." Rowan replies and looks a little embarrassed for a few moments. "I don't know if I'm brave, it's just that... It's always your grandmothers cousin's friend's acquaintance's son or something who were 'infected' with an 'aberrant disease', never actually anyone you've ever met or seen."

He pauses and preens his wing for a moment before opening his beak again. "I ..." He seems to change his mind however and falls silent for a moment before speaking up. "It just seems like tall tales, something without proof probably doesn't exist, you know. Still, I have to admit I feel a lot better after your reassurance."

Berr climbs down from Rowan's back and begins to move towards Odd slowly, Rowan notices this, but makes no move to stop him. Silently he wishes he had his Mus's bravery, but he finds himself rooted to his perch, too afraid to move closer, too determined to turn back.
