“Alright...” he is beginning to sound a little pathetic. “... that's fine.” he says feebly. In his mind, what should have been a peaceful night at home to talk and re-engage with each other, has so far only served to broaden the recent silence between them. His frustration at his own display of pettiness, and Fi's... well, to be fair, she hadn't really done anything wrong... this felt familiar. Gah! Listening to his own thoughts, he'd only annoy himself further.

Stretching wide a creamy wing, he takes a deep breath before letting the Will-held trinket fall. “I'll... uh, should I come with you?” he asks, leaning over in front of her to catch her gaze.

Fiercefire paused, taking a moment to consider before she spoke this time. This was what their neighbors would want - the tension, the almost-fighting. They were just waiting for the pairing to break; she would not give them what they wanted. Her bright eyes softened, and she nodded. "I'd like that."

Basil offers little more then a weak smile in reply, though inwardly he's quite relieved. The rest of the evening would have been... rather uncomfortable, if they had shown up at Fi's Great Uncle's home apart from each other. It would take some time, granted, but they'd eventually have some space to talk... some time to move on.

Leaning back upright, he folds his outstretched wing before speaking quietly. “Mm. Shall we be off then?”

~~~And with that, the newly-mated pair are off to see Fiercefire's distant uncle, the Builder. A new roleplay will begin in this thread once the players of the supporting cast are announced!~~~
Blackbirch may have been a distant relative to the fiery-tempered Mist, though it certainly wasn't because of proximity. After the building boom of Noctua had subsided, the builder decided to move closer to his family, though the decision was always a perplexing one: it's not as though he ever went out of his way to ever really interact with the family closely, and usually kept to his own affairs. He has visited with Fiercefire and her parents in her youth, though she probably wouldn't remember the occasion very well, as it wasn't extraordinary in any way, aside from the fact that he was there to begin with.
The truth of the matter is, Birch isn't the sort of sentinel who enjoys idle chatter, though he does care about his family enough to listen to the forest if he catches a stray rumor about them.
Which is how he managed to hear about his niece's situation, and her relationship with a newly budding crafter. This set of news was bittersweet to his eartufts: while he loathed that she was losing business and moral because of stuck-up, pure-bred [and potentially inbred, in his own opinion] snobs, he was very, very curious and interested in her pick of a mate. It had been years since his last failed attempt at a good apprentice, and though he told himself he was done with the entire disappointing process, he couldn't help but think that perhaps, it was time to set aside his vow and start looking. Times are rapidly changing, and he's not what he used to be, unfortunately.
And so, he waits. It wouldn't take long for the couple to spy the group of massive, ancient oak trees that mark the beginning of his own secluded territory. Venturing in, they'd notice only two trees with added woodwork: the largest of the group, wrapped around in a platform that vaguely resembled a sort of fence-less, wrap-around porch, and then a smaller tree, with just a few planks and platforms outside of a hollow to better accommodate perching arrangements. The large wrap-around platform houses scrap wood too large to fit in a hollow, and various crudely made tools that are organized in a small shelving unit attached to the outside of the tree besides the hollow. Blackbirch would be seen perched on the platform from the smaller of the two trees, with more than a few consoling words on his mind.
[omg I promise the rest of my posts aren't going to be this long, I just wanted him to have a good intro X_X;; ]
Though still somewhat anxious, Fiercefire was feeling much better than she had just earlier - even if it was mostly all still there, in the back of her mind. She'd forced it back by repeating to herself that taking it out on Basil wasn't going to help, not to mention very unseemly if she did it while they were visiting.
She hadn't had time to do an exhaustive check of her traps, but a quick one had turned up a hare...not a bad gift at all, really. It wasn't something stunning, but it would do well enough, she hoped.
The gift for their host clutched in her talons, she winged her way into her Great Uncle's territory with her mate.
Over the course of their flight, Basil has been silently fretting over his current social predicament. It's less to do with recent gossip and more with the accompanying jitters one can experience when meeting a “Great Uncle-in-law” for the first time... that, and the thought that he hadn't actually brought a gift of his own. As the modest-looking territory comes into view, Basil is visibly surprised for a moment. For being such an old fellow, Basil hadn't expected Fi's Great Uncle to be quite so... well established. Go figure, huh? He is a builder.
Trailing into the territory after Fiercefire, Basil unconsciously adopts an almost dignified expression as he lands; an old holdover from days gone by. Those who knew him well, would also know it's true meaning. A practiced veil for unease.
Oh mother, if he isn't anxious... ... why is he thinking of Mother at a time like this?
Now if he could just recall the Great Uncle's name?... looks like he might have to settle with 'sir' for now...
He first saw a pair of pale wings in the distance, slowly becoming larger at a considerable amount of speed. At the sight of the second pair, darker in color but still bright enough to spy, the builder let out a low hoot to welcome his niece and perhaps even a new nephew in, and to also lead them to the right tree to perch.
When they finally landed by his platform to his 'cozy little home', he took a quick glance-over for the both of them: Fi appeared to be tired, almost strained, though certainly not from the flight itself. Mus-brains, he thought to himself, thinking of the sentinels that were giving her grief for her new-found happiness. After looking over Basil, he decided that the poor youngin' was actually a bit too nervous to really give him a good examination, so instead of staying quiet for a little while longer, he began to speak.
"Welcome, welcome," he rumbled in his low voice, "Look at you, Fiercefire, all grown up. I feel like it's been just yesterday that you were still a feisty little hatchling." Typical non-sense chatter was his aim to potentially relax the pair, even though it's not what he'd considered something to make good with time. "And...you," he starts as he turned his attention to the wildtype, "Welcome to the family. I am Blackbirch, and you are?"
Fiercefire first set down the hare's carcass before landing herself, settling next to her mate. She was all set for at least a few moments of awkward silence when the Builder spoke - he had a deep, pleasant voice that reminded her a little of her grandfather. It was a very soothing sound, even applied to idle chatter about a time in her life she really didn't remember.
"Uncle," she greeted, with a warmth she didn't have to dig far to find, thanks to his friendly welcome. It had been quite some time since they'd been welcome anywhere. "This is my mate, Basil." There was definite pride there, with no need to be tempered in their current company.
"We brought you a gift."
As he lands next to Fiercefire, Basil passes a cursory glance over the surroundings before focusing on their host. Yup, Fi certainly hadn't exaggerated when she'd told him just how “mixed” her family was. Not that it really phased him right now... well, not that much anyhow. He had kinda figured they would bare a little more resemblance then this though... but that was probably just more of his supposed “good breeding” talking.
At Blackbirch's forthright greeting, Basil's calm facade slips a bit as a more genuine grin moves to take it's place. Fi as a child... he'd never really pictured her as such. Cute. “I'm...” he falters as Fi answers the question for him. “... heh, very pleased to meet you!” he adds with a slight bow. Always with the formalities, even now.
"Oh?" Eyebrow ridges raised slightly as the body limply lands by his claws. "So you did, thank you." It was certainly a good gesture of the two, though he really wasn't expecting any gifts to be given for tonight. The exchange was too formal for what he had in mind, though he's not about to pass up a perfectly delicious rabbit. He reached his left talons and pulled the carcass closer to himself as a way to show his acceptance of their gift. "It's been a while since I've had a rabbit, myself, so this will be very much enjoyed."
It seems that his plan was beginning to work: just a few nostalgic words and already he can tell the pair of them visibly relax in his company. Good. There's no sense in having them here if they can't enjoy themselves, and therefore, give him a better look at...Basil? What kind of a sodding name is that, after an herb? How silly, he mused to himself. Luckily for Basil, he won't be judging him over his parents' mistakes.
"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you as well, Basil," he begins, "Would you two care to come inside? The benefits of living in older trees is the larger space for hollows. The three of us would have no problem fitting in, though if a fourth were to come in, then it might be a little snug." The invitation is open: they can either come inside the hollow, or if the two would prefer, they could stay just outside in their current perching arrangements.
"Lucky there aren't four of us then," Fi noted, then hesitated and added with a touch of mischief, "Yet." It was a silly sort of tease, but she'd been over-harsh with Basil while they worked on their nest, and she was still looking to smooth it over. It was a small, subtle affirmation that even though she was irritable, she wasn't second-guessing her choice.
She left it for her mate to answer whether or not they'd be going inside - she certainly wouldn't mind, but maybe he was feeling a little awkward still?
Basil's eyes have just started to wander around the platform when Fi speaks, snapping him back into the conversation. “..ah, heh..” he chuckles. “... that'd be fine.” he replies to Blackbirch. Honestly, he didn't really feel inclined to move just yet, his curiousity presently absorbed with their structured surrondings... but this is Fi's uncle. They've likely a lot to catch up on, save his own questions for another night.
This was a family visit after all, not some crafter's faire.
It wasn't hard to observe that the wildtype was distracted; perhaps inviting them into his hollow was not the best course of action - yet. He had noticed Basil stealing glimpses of his territory as Fi ventured into her playful joke, which really, was another good sign as well. They're becoming more and more comfortable around him, and it shouldn't take too long to finally get the answers he needed aside from having some good old fashioned company. Noctus knows he'd been needing some in the last few years.
And then, an idea struck him. ".....Or," he starts, glancing over at Basil, "perhaps you'd like to take a quick tour of my territory? Before we settle down and catch up, of course." Yes, yes, if Basil showed any interest in his architecture, things will go very well for him. "I couldn't help but notice you looking at my platforms. Tell me, is woodwork something you're interested in?"
He'll play oblivious for now. After all, there really is no reason he should even KNOW that Basil is a crafter, let alone any of the strains they've been experiencing in these last few days.
Fi had to remind herself to shut her beak and not continue to answer for Basil - he was perfectly capable of getting to know her Great Uncle without her interrupting. It was just so hard to contain herself! Finally, there was someone genuinely interested in her mate. She'd had no one to talk to about the wonderful male who'd come into her life, and was positively bursting with pent-up pride and the want to talk about it.
Instead of bragging, the trapper settled for watching and listening, curious how things would go. So far, things were looking good for any future visits to - or from - family. Besides, how could anyone not like Basil?
