I think Hachi had her faults, too. She expected Shouji to make all the effort in the relationship.

Well, it's true that Hachi does have faults.
That was obvious from the beginning.
But if Shouji really loved her and was actually serious -for- those faults, he wouldn't have done what he did.
It's was most likely in Hachi's nature to expect there was another woman, also, not just the fact that she doesn't trust Shouji.
