Joshua smiled as he walked into the room. It was a bit too pink for his liking, but the gold was certainly nice. For a girl's room, that is. He looked around the room. There was a girl, a little older than him sitting at the pink sugar desk.
"Where's the princess?" He asked the lady. He couldn't understand why she was laughing.

"Thats the princess, silly!" Galleai whispered at him, nudging him and indicating the girl. There was something unusual about her that Galleai couldn't quite place until they got a little closer. The princess, humming sweetly, was also made out of sugar!

Joshua blushed, and went towards the princess. "Hello," He said, giving her an awkward bow. "I'm Joshua. Would you like to be friends?" He asked shyly. The princess was beautiful, her sugar skin sparkled in the light of the room. Her gown seemed to be made out of pink cherry frosting. She had blue sugar eyes, and lemon colored hair.
Joshua paused for a moment, he'd never been friends with a princess before. Would the princess want to be his friend? Maybe she only liked princes. "This is my friend, she's traveled with me." He said, gestering to Galleai. Then, he remembered that he didn't know the cat's name. "What's your name, kitty?" He whispered.

"My name is Galleai." She tried to do a little bow, which was marginally awkward as a cat. But she kind of managed. "Will you accept our humble offer of friendship, highness?"
But while the princess smiled prettily at them, she didn't say a thing.

Joshua smiled, "Galleai's a pretty name." He said, then looked to the princess. "What's your name?" He asked. He didn't feel right just calling her princess. The princess didn't answer.
"Maybe she's shy," Joshua suggested, looking at Galleai. "Or can't talk." He smiled at the princess. "Can you talk?" He asked.

The princess smiled her vacant, saccharine smile at them but didn't respond. Galleai walked around her chair, peering up at the princess and then returning to Joshua.
"I think she's hollow!" She thought about this for a second. "I'll bet she's cursed and we have to find out how to un-curse her and then maybe she'll talk!"

Joshua frowned, a cursed princess? "How do we uncurse her?" He asked. "Do we have to fight trolls? Or goblins?" He asked, a little frightened. His Mommy had only told him one story about a cursed princess.
"I'm not going to kiss her," He said, making a disgusted face. "Mommy says when Sleeping Beauty was cursed, a prince had to kiss her or she'd sleep forever! Maybe we have to find the Prince?"

"I dont know." Galleai twitched her tail. "But you're a magic boy or a knight or a prince, I'm sure. And I'm a talking cat. So between the two of us, we can break her enchantment." She grinned a toothy little feline grin. "But I dont think you have to kiss her if you dont want to. Maybe the lady in the shining gown can tell us what happened to her. Maybe it's a magic word or something..."

Joshua nodded, "A magic word sounds right." The lady in the sparkling dress was at the door. "What happened to the Princess? Do you know?" He asked. "Is she cursed? Do we have to say a magic word? Or... does she need kissed?" He made a face at this idea.

The lady smiled and began to tell them the tale of the princess. "Once upon a time there was a beautiful little princess. Everyone thought that she was just as sweet as could be. And when she was born, she was blessed by three good fairies, just like all little princesses are. They gave her hair of spun gold, eyes like sapphires and lips like cherries. They gave her a sweet nature, a sweet voice and a sweet smile.
But of course, there was also the wicked fairy who came at her christening and cursed her. The wicked fairy said that the princess was so very sweet that she simply couldn't fit any more sweetness in her! And so if she ever let anything that wasn't bitter or sour cross her lips, she would turn to sugar, as would the whole castle and everyone in it!
And so the princess grew up eating nothing but bitter things. And then one day the wicked fairy in a fit of mischief dressed up like an old woman and tricked the princess into tasting a cookie! And.. well.." The shining lady gestured around her. "Everything turned to sugar."

Joshua liked the story, but he didn't like that it didn't tell them how to save the Princess from the curse. "Do we just give her something sour to eat?" He asked. "Or bring her veggies?" He still didn't know how to break the curse. "Do you know how to fix it?" He asked Galleai. Maybe the cat knew, she was smart.
"Maybe kill the mean fairy?" He was a little frightened, if that was their task. If one fairy could turn the entire castle into sugar... what could it do to a little boy and a cat?

Galleai shook her head slowly. "I dont know. Sometimes these things are like riddles and we have to discover what the trick is ourselves." She paced around the room thoughtfully. "The witch didn't like the princess being all sweet. So that means the witch is probably a bitter person. Maybe we have to make her be sweet? Or maybe you're right and we just have to feed her something really sour or really bitter."

Joshua frowned. "Maybe the mean fairy was jealous?" He asked. "Maybe she just needs a friend!" He paused. Maybe mean people all needed friends. Then they wouldn't be mean! "Or maybe she needs something sweet to eat, like cookies."

"Thats a good idea!" Galleai said, purring. "Maybe it's not the princess who needs something to break the curse, but the wicked witch! Lets find something sweet to bring her and then we can see if she wants to be friends!"

Joshua smiled, glad his friend liked his idea. "Do you know where the witch is?" He asked the Lady. "We can make her something sweet and--"
Suddenly the lady started to change. Her shining gown turned black. Joshua gasped, and backed away. She was the witch!
