Definitely a homebody but she had the sense in her to grasp the emotions that a nomadic soquili genuinely had within them. She'd never be able to empathise with them, but at the very least she could respect where they were coming from. It caused the stallion to smile a little more in gratitude - he'd certainly been graced with pleasant company despite the critical musings that had come from some of his herd on his return. Apparently as the years had progressed the lowlands had become less pleasant, Biscuit had yet to see this but then again he'd always had an insane amount of luck! The fates had always blessed him and as such, they had merely presented him with a very pleasant mare.
"Although in answer to yer question me cousin an I have nae crossed paths in quite a few years," he shook his head slowly. His brow furrowed briefly as he recalled the chatter, disapproval and the occasional ranting that certain members of the herd had done in mention of the cousin's recent excursion. Apparently they hadn't heard from him in months and his aunt was at the point of sending his father off to locate him. Had it not been for Biscuit's soothing words it was highly likely that the winds would have been dispatched in a repeat of Fenghuang's last excursion to the lowlands.
"Last I be 'earin he set of fer the north about six months ago and me aunt and uncle have nae heard head nor hide of him since," he shrugged loosely at this, frankly he respect Fenghuang's right to silence. His own family would go years or more without note of Biscuit's whereabouts and then he would simply saunter back into their lives filled to the brim with tales. Yes, the brown stallion was certain that his cousin would return whenever he was ready. "I nae be followin' 'im as I 'ad only jest come home and it be fittin' that I stay and catch up on the latest news... 'sides, I nae really be interested in the frozen wastes at tha' time o' the year. It be even worse than te desert," he pointed out.
"I nae be pullin' an awful lot o' pranks though... see us Islagiatt tend te do things fer a reason - may seem like a prank but we 'ave our motives. Well... Most of the time anyway. Why de ye ask?"

For all of her pride in her manners and polish, Anelisse really wasn't that good at dissembling. Anger, irritation, pleasure, sorrow...the slightest change of emotion, any sort of intense feeling, and she was broadcasting it to everyone in viewing distance. Had she known that fact she likely would have been exceedingly irate; after all, she was supposed to be collected and regal, not transparent and childish!
It had to make it easier for those around her, however, like now.
The brown stallion's intelligence had not been the clarification she hoped for. Instead, her brow creased and her mouth curled in pronounced confusion, confusion and frustration. So Fenghuang hadn't been seen by his family for upwards of six months? That had to be nearly as long as it had been since she'd last seen him, only since then she'd seen him what, three days ago? And furthermore, he had smelled and made comments about not being able to bathe because the water was frozen...hadn't he said that he was in the wastes before? So he'd up and gone to the wastes and then come right back to harass her before even touching base with his family?
Her frown deepened and took on a more thoughtful tilt as she mulled, trying to sort out the confusing behavior of the red stallion at the expense of the brown one she was currently talking to. A pity, too, because the brown stallion was being so very nice and talkative and mannerly and admiring, he really deserved more attention than she was giving him now. Not that she was thinking about anything like that at the moment, though, being too preoccupied with other thoughts.
Still, it was almost too frustrating. It was a beautiful romantic picture, the devoted swain going on a perilous journey to parts unknown and inhospitable and then charging back to the gorgeous mare who had captured his heart and haunted his dreams, laying his admiration and profusions of loyalty and unworthiness at her beautifully manicured hoof. THAT picture was beautiful and the way things SHOULD be, but it made no sense why anyone would hurry anywhere just to be a grouch. An angry grouch, even, who yelled and sulked and pulled hair.
No light, merely more confusion. Sighing, Anelisse shook her head again, then huffed with no real notice of the brown stallion. "Not at all reasonable or logical, and he said I had issues!." Harrumph indeed!

The pieces of the puzzle were quick to click together at the mention of Fenghuang. No sooner had Biscuit explained his cousin's preferences than the mare had shot off on a tangent. Ever the patience soquili, he was content to wait for her to recover her composure but he hadn't expected his cousin to have known her. Well that certainly explained some of the odder questions and the general interest in his family - combine that with her queries regarding 'pranks' and Biscuit was fairly certain she had been subject to his cousin's attentions. Biscuit could have assumed that most of these roguish activities had been there to express affection but it didn't take a genius for this particular soquili to recognise that this probably wouldn't have slotted into this mare's lifestyle.
...But, Fenghuang was back already?
"So ye know him!" Biscuit announced with a bemused smile. Her muttering hadn't gone unnoticed and he gave a soft chuckle of affection. Her words didn't make a lot of sense to him, but he could assume that whatever had occured had ruffled her feathers. Perhaps it wasn't a prank but Fenghuang's methods of showing creatures the 'light' was far different than Biscuit's. While the brown stallion opted to be patient, Feng was more inclined towards the more questionnable methods. Ah - but it wasn't his duty to pry.
"Well tha' certainly be explainin' yer interest in 'im even if fer a lil bit," he nodded at this. "I be apologisin' if ye found 'is behaviour wierd, me family 'ave rather unconventional methods o' dealin' with other folk sometimes," he explained softly. It wasn't an apology and it wasn't his place to apologise on behalf of Fenghuang, but he could apologise on behalf of his family just in case she had encountered a number of them - consider it prior warning as well.
"Though I dinnae realise 'e be back so soon, maybe 'e be aimin' te head off again pretty soon so 'e be avoidin' his family until 'e be more settled. Wanderlust is a terrible thing, dinnae make much sense to those who be lackin' it - " he paused for a few moments and rolled his shoulders in what could be seen as a loose shrug.
"Well, perhaps I be bumpin' inte him on te' way out - catch up if 'e be havin' the time te speak, ye know?"
Clearly, Biscuit wasn't terribly concerned with his cousins decision not to reunite with his family just yet. Then again, Biscuit was an individual with wanderlust and also knew of the sheer amount of time it took to climb the slopes. If Feng was in a hurry then he simply wouldn't have time to spend a week or more trekking up to the peaks - better to wait until later...or something.

The look that Biscuit was awarded for all his trouble was one of simple aggravation. The very idea, him being amused at her. Even more, the very idea that she was 'interested' in anything, ESPECIALLY Fenghuang. She was not interested in anyone, just wanting information to try and decipher strange and convoluted behavior was NOT the same as having an interest of even the most casual sense. She only had interest in things that were worthy of being interested in, thank you kindly!
So it was with a very profound tone of self-mortification and 'you should know better than that' that she corrected the brown stallion. "I am NOT interested in anything, I simply wanted to know. And yes, I do know him as a matter of fact, if you can count two short, muddy, and unkind encounters as a basis for 'knowing' someone. But I can assure you, that is the extreme end of ANYTHING, though if he had any sort of decency he would make another appearance and try to explain his crazy behavior." By the end of her speech, it was obvious that her words weren't so much meant for Biscuit as his absent cousin, the narrowed eyes and absent expression an indication of her opinions in that regard. But after a moment, she straightened up as though brushing that topic off entirely.
"However, I am not going to be one of those mares that holds other people responsible for the actions of someone that happens to be their friend or relative; rest assured that just because your cousin doesn't know how to treat a mare I am going to give YOU a kick meant for him." That ought to set his mind at ease; to be sure, he hadn't shown any indication that his mind was unsettled on that score; she was just setting the record straight in advance, something that he HAD to appreciate. "Whether or not you see him, there is no reason to indulge any whims on his account."

Oho she was a young one and a firey one. Biscuit had made an observation which she had totally denied despite it's accuracy. Still, it brought back memories of his childhood and consequently he released a small smile and bowed his head as an apology. He would humour her for the time being, he'd long since figured out that life was too short to attempt to educate everyone around you. If she wanted to learn and mature then she would do so when she was inclined to, he by no means had the right to force her or to rage over her naivity. He had better things to do - he was an avid explorer and fully embraced the idea of moving along when the wilds called to him. If he left on unpleasant terms then this was unfortunate, if he left on pleasant terms then all the better - he wasn't one to dwell on the past when there was so much to be grasped and enjoyed in the future.
Tomorrow was another day, as they said...
"Well hang on jes' one wee minute..." he cleared his throat and released a soft sigh. He wasn't going to lecture her or spend hours discussing the matter but to avoid further confusion and fury on her part he would explain something. She might have been young and confusion was all part of the 'growing up' process but sometimes a little nudge in the right direction never hurt. "Consider it a lil now," he continued at last once he'd gathered his thoughts and could formulate them into sentence that wouldn't get him decapitated.
"Ye are obviously mighty angry with me cousin," he shook his head. "Nae if I be knowin' me family, if they really are nae wanted aroun' then they'll respect ye and disappear..." he explained patiently. "Ye give off the air o' wanted te smite 'im and I be sayin' 'e be takin' the 'ighroad and leavin' ye be..." He shrugged loosely and clucked his tongue. He wasn't goint to excuse his cousin's behaviour or mentioned anythign relating to that fact as it had been taken poorly last time. "If ye be wantin' an explanation ye may be needin' te find 'im instead... since ye dinnae wan' 'im nearby I dinnae expect 'im te invade on yer privacy any more..."
"I know I be makin' it sound like ye be doin' the legwork but we all got manners te a point and if ye really dinnae like 'im then 'e not gonna plague ye no more, see where I be comin' from?"

A fine bit of reasoning, but one that would have held a lot more water if she'd never seen Fenghuang again after their first meeting. She was quite sure that she'd been more than adamant THAT time that she didn't want to deal with him, but he'd had to go and show up again, be all maddening and rude and unreasonable again, raise some actual QUESTIONS...and then he decides to be all mannerly and respect her wishes from the last time? Insufferable stallion.
Not that she was going to share that bit of intelligence with the brown one, to be sure. She had no reason to share her dirty laundry with the general public, especially general public who were related to and attempting to justify irrational behaviors in a MOST unhelpful way, especially because he was being amused. He might be a pleasant enough stallion on his own, but that hardly gave him the right to be amused by this unfortunate situation or by her in general.
On top of that, she didn't DO legwork. Gentleman always did the legwork, and even though he was no gentleman he at least had the anatomy to attempt it, dash it all!
And she did NOT give off any airs, thank you much, especially of the smiting sort. "I'm sure you mean well with your explanations, but I really don't think that it matters anyway. I'm sure that he has flittered off to new parts unknown, undoubtedly to harrass the next mare on his list."

"Ye could be right abou' tha'..." Biscuit agreed with the same infuriating smile that he had maintained throughout the conversation. He had the sneaking suspicion that regardless of the words that came out of his mouth she would be in a permanent state of disagreement with him. Frankly if his cousin had taken his leave to 'harass' another mare then the older stallion was not going to question him on the decision. There were other females in the world and they were decidedly less awkward and far more amiable than the mare he now had the pleasure of keeping company. Fenghuang was young and perhaps he had already mastered the art of moving on to more desirable territories. If he had then Biscuit was deeply impressed and would hope that in the course of his own travels he would bump into him to offer his congratulations.
"World's a big place an' 'e as the wanderlust bug so ye nae be knowin' where 'e be off til next - if I be seein' 'im I'll send ye regards te 'im though," he added wistfully. Tossing his curls away from his eyes, he allowed his attention to drift towards the river. It was only then that he saw the sun beyond his shoulders and the considerable distance it had wandered across the horizon. Huh, apparently he still had the ability to occupy himself for extended periods of time even if the conversation wasn't the most comfortable or enjoyable... after all, it wasn't everyday he conversed with a mare who seemed infuriated to the brink of obssession with his cousin.
...Well maybe not obssession, but he still had to wonder what the hell the red stallion had done. Surely mud throwing didn't cause this severe a reaction?
On second thought, perhaps it did.
"But if tha' be the case and 'e 'as wandered off inte the unknown there be no reason te be so wound up abou' 'is behaviour. I'd say ye'll be safe from this point on and can enjoy yerself til the fullest, aye?"

"No regards, no messages, no nothing. If he wishes to take accountability, then it had better be his own choice, not because of any suggestions on the part of you or anyone else." However, after almost snapping out that response Anelisse rethought herself, then offered majestically, "But thank you for the offer, as misguided as it is. You really are a very nice stallion." High words of praise indeed, considering that Fenghuang's adjective of choice was 'insufferable'.
Still, this cousin was also at least a hair insufferable in his own right, him and his suspiciously smug and knowing smiles. In spite of her denials, she had the distinct impression that he didn't believe her and that he suspected her of things that were DEFINITELY not true, thanks much. Humph.
"I assure you, I am NOT wound up. I haven't been well lately, as you can no doubt see," That much was definitely the truth, though her period of 'unwellness' was less from a standard illness than from self-mutilation of the mental sort...but unwell was unwell. "And I've only recently started to get my strength back. I assure you, being wound up is not even on the horizon, and if I were to get wound up it would be on a reasonable subject. If your cousin happened to be a common topic for us, that hardly suggests more than a means of conversation, nothing more."
There, that was very convincing.

"Tis nae polite te be commentin' on a mare's outward appearance. If ye be feelin' under te weather it is nae my place te say," Biscuit replied smoothly. Ever the practised gentleman, he was always more than capable of brushing off such topics. He had noticed from the outset that the mare had been through a rough patch, her haggard appearance shouted it out for all to hear. However he was well versed in regarding those around him with 'respect' and often ignored such things. If they decided to bring the subject up then he would briefly respond to it but make no attempt to further the topic. Unfortunately if she was looking for sympathy he wasn't the best stallion to get it from, besides...he suspected sympathy may simply stoke the fire and one wrong word could have her lecturing him again.
She had a habit of that apparently. She spoke endlessly about what she wasn't doing and seemed obssessed with defending herself in that regard. No matter what he said it apparently all harked back to the same topic, it felt like he was going around in circles. Perhaps this was why the minutes had been wittled away so swiftly, disappearing into a sea of totally irrelevant nonsense. Well he supposed he was providing a service to the mare in the form of a listening ear but this didn't make it any less jarring. If she wasn't wound up by his cousin's behaviour then she wouldn't be so incredibly defensive about it!
"But if ye be sure ye dinnae want anythin' of note passed on then I be sure te keep me words te meself," he agreed. He could respect another's request and since she had opted to decline his offer as a messenger then that made his work much more easy. If he bumped into his cousin then he suspected his conversation would be significantly more airy and enjoyable, if the mare was anything to go by it would simply make the younger stallion groan. "Huang an' 'is travels will be me only discussions with 'im - ye 'ave no need te worry abou' comin' up in te conversation - aye?"
"Now..." he cleared his throat and tilted his head to the side thoughtfully. "Ye say tha' me cousin be a common topic fer us and tha' be true, but tha' dinnae mean 'e 'as te be mentioned all te time. If ye 'ave a more enjoyable topic te discuss then I be all ears!"

Well, that was a bit of a challenge. Having thrown down the proverbial gauntlet in the form of a plausible subject change, Anelisse now found herself having to scramble for a topic; always a much harder task than one would first suspect. However, she had always prided herself (among other things) on her flexibility, therefore after only a few moments' worth of struggle she was able to say with extreme dignity, "I don't believe that you've introduced yourself, actually. I know that I haven't either, but good etiquette leaves the first introduction to the stallion and I'm quite sure you go by something more charming than 'brown stallion'." Perhaps less informative, but hey, she was making conversation!
And soon to be getting another aid, in the form of the ever loyal Raccoon. Since she had first observed Biscuit, Raccoon had been filling the role of silent observer, giving Mistress time to chat and cheer. By now, though, she was of the opinion that Anelisse had been suitably cheered and was now ready to share their new guest, whose curly hair was something of fascination for the hair obsessed familiar. She had learned her lesson, though; rather than pull off some of Biscuit's hair, she had merely slithered up to him and given it a light tug by way of getting his attention. "Chirrup!"

Ooooh, she had him there and he could admit to defeat in that regard. He had been inclined towards conversing as opposed to introductions and for good reason. Generally he only encountered an individual once and was therefore forgettable. As a result conversation was key and introductions were not. Common etiquette in the Kawani was of course different from that of the travelling community and apparently he needed to remember that. Ah, perhaps he had been away for a little too long if he had slipped completely into the life of the traveller...embracing only it's expectations and mannerism.
"Aye, fer that I be apologisin'," he replied softly and gave a slight bow, "Me name be Biscuit, it be a pleasure te meet ye, Miss." he continued. "However if ye be wantin' te refer te me as 'Brown Stallion' then ye may, it nae be botherin' me te be honest," he pointed out. A typical traveller if there ever was one, completely content to be referred to as 'you' if necessary - frankly it made consorting with females much easier as they couldn't send head hunters after him if he happened to put a hoof out of line and push his luck. Luckily for him that generally didn't happen much but it never hurt one to consider such things.
However, he wasn't granted much more time to converse directly towards the mare as her companion gave a gentle tug of his tail. Glancing round he was greeted with what seemed to be an oddly coloured raccoon, an albino, perhaps? He had no means to confirm this but he released a chuckle and gave the creature his attention. "Well hello there, Miss Raccoon - and what can I be doin' fer ye today, eh?"

Biscuit? Well, it certainly was no 'brown stallion', but it was handy to have a name to latch onto, whether for sentiment, convenience, or vengeance. Making a mental note of the name, Anelisse nodded her thanks for his offer, though she was quick to dismiss it. "In my family, we use proper names. You might be the only brown stallion about now, but it's very possible that another will appear and make things confusing. My name is Anelisse, by the way."
Having exhausted that topic of conversation a great deal faster than she'd thought possible, Raccoon's appearance was extremely fortuitous and she gave her a smile as Biscuit's attention was drawn that way. "You can drop the 'Miss', too much formality makes her uncomfortable."
And indeed, at the greeting Raccoon had first blinked, then laughed gaily while shaking her head and making dismissive motions with her paws. 'Raccoon' was good enough for her, seeing as how it was her name and all! But at his kind question, she was quick to grin, pointing at his long curly tail with an impish smile.

No guarantees he'd remember the name in due course, there was a good chance she would slip his mind the further he drifted from the Kawani but he would amuse her for now. Everyone around here was always so obssessed with names, he on the other hand was not. Still; if it ensured that she would be placated and he wouldn't be receiving any lectures any time soon then he was happy enough. Introductions aside, he now had his fully attention upon the raccoon and it appeared that he was significantly better at translating her chittering and charade than his cousin was. With age came wisdom, with travel came the ability to interpret even the wierdest of languages. In certain regions of the world he had been required to mime to get his point across to soquili who didn't speak his language at all!
"Well then," he chuckled and continued to watch the raccoon carefully before nodding slowly. According to her movements she was expressing an interest in his hair. He was aware that Raccons and squirrels rather enjoyed toying with soquili manes and tails in their spare time but this was an assumption. Not one to go purely upon assumption, he placed this to one side and instead chose to converse a little further with the critter for a better explanation. Sure enough, he adjusted his stance to watch her more closely and raised a brow in a good natured fashion. "A pleasure te meet ye Miss. Raccoon -" he offered before popping his lips.
"Nae ye be eyein' me hair with much interest so I be assumin' ye be inclined towards it - how can I help ye, hm?" In this he hoped that the raccoon woudl further her explanations and as a consequence he would understand her much more fully. Unfortunately, Anelisse had all but been forgotten in the midst of the tiny creature.

Normally, Anelisse would be extremely affronted to be ignored or sidelined, even for as noble a purpose as someone humoring Raccoon. At the moment though, Raccoon's appearance was a godsend; this Biscuit was far too suspicious a character to be healthy and he couldn't be good for her nerves. That made it easier than normal to accept the affront; with the majestic air of one acting completely of her own will (and therefore NOT one that had been marginalized by a miming Raccoon), she announced, "Since you don't seem to be as dense as the rest of the world when it comes to conversing with her, I'll just leave you two to your chatting then. If you'll excuse me."
Without waiting for a response or an acknowledgment (or to see for a fact that she was being ignored, she turned and swept away, making her way down the riverbank to a place nicely out of sight where she could have a soak and a swim in what passed for private in these parts. That ought to relax her.
Raccoon was satisfied with this turn of affairs, for her own part. It was always nice to 'talk' to Soquilis that actually made an effort to understand her, and those were few and far between as a rule. Still, experience had taught her that just because she THOUGHT someone understood her didn't mean that they had. That in mind, she was very deliberate and overly cautious in both her gestures and her slower-than-normal chittering as she pointed to Biscuit's tail again, then his mane, then to the bands of hair that decorated her wrists and waist and neck. Having done that much, she cocked her head at him and offered a querying chirp; had he understood her?

He got it...she was a collector of sorts - well, almost. Her handiwork with Anelisse's mane hadn't gone unnoticed and nor had the detailing upon the braid. Evidently the raccoon was one who gathered up trinkets and jewels that would compliment her mistress. Admittedly he wasn't sure how his mane might compliment the mare but on the other hand, the raccoon could have been equally interested in gathering his hair for other uses. He wasn't as paranoid as his cousin regarding 'voodoo' magicks and as such he released a chuckle and turned round.
Anelisse's exit had not gone unnoticed for the most part, but Biscuit was content enough to leave her be. Her rather unhealthy level of irritation could exhaust even the most patient and as such he revelled in the opportunity to converse with someone considerably more hospitable. He hadn't meant to be rude but Anelisse was certainly a soquili that only the most patient saint could handle permanently - hence why his cousin had taken his leave, right?
"Well now..." he lowered his head as he came to face the raccoon so that his curly locks were within her grasp. "I believe I can help ye with tha, missy..." he assured her and tilted his head to the side. His hair was much shorter than most, bouncing gently against his neck. He had permitted it to be cut on many occasions to keep it out of his eyes and out of the way during his travels so losing a little more hair was of no bother to him either. "But I be askin' ye te take it from me mane, me rump is a bit sensitive an' a tug from there can be a tad painful sometimes, nyah?"
