Ah, the choices: he could give only grains of truth and tease the curious little femme about a past he really didn't want or care to think about; oooor he could just flat out lie, which was almost the same thing really considering how much he evaded the truth to begin with. "Eeeh, it's not that interesting," Axel replied with a slight shrug, nonchalant in his teaser as he tossed his head back, turned, and began to slink away, letting his crimson mane bounce away from his eyes and defy gravity with his back to Nyx. "But I can say for sure that elves are just a weird bunch of people, huh?" Axel's darker coat allowed him to meld quicker with the dappled shadows of the trees, though a split second before he disappeared his thick tail twitched, the fire charm glinting invitingly for a brief moment before it was swallowed whole.

xA slight look of hurt mixed with a bit of shock quickly crossed Nyx’s face. She knew that Axel was not obligated to give her his whole story, but somewhere in her mind she almost expected it in return for her tale. All she knew was that elves must have had something to do with the male’s past also. She stood in her place, just watching Axel with that same hurt face, although he was not looking at her. The pale femme was so absorbed in trying to figure out what happened to the poor fiery hound, that she didn’t even realize he was walking away until the glint of his fire charm caught her lavender eye.
“Wait, where are you going?” She asked a little louder than usual, though it was still not loud at all. She gracefully trotted forward so that she could follow him.

For the second or third time that night his voice rang from the obscurity of nowhere in particular. "No idea." Easily one could hear the grin in his voice, the daring hound that strode through both known and unknown with just enough regard for himself to stay alive through adulthood. Axel was a wanderer, a vagrant with no purpose other than to beguile or berate those he met, and only on rare occassions would he deeply considered a real life. But what was the use of that without real friends, huh?
Not wanting to lose his little aquaintance just yet, he at times made his pawsteps crash just a little more than was neccessary upon the leafy ground, a collection of various sounds reaching Nyx's ears to lead her forward in a strange fashion; was he there, here, somewhere else? The fiery hound's pelt flashed bright in the naked spaces betwixt the trees but otherwise was as much a ghost hound as he had claimed the female to be mere moments before. "I think there's a river near here," his voice reverberated through the foliage with some confidence as he marched over a thick and uprooted stump just now conceeding to the fungi overrunning its surface, one indention of a paw destroying the colony carelessly.

xNyx stopped walking for a moment. “A river…” she thought to herself inquisitively, “I bet he is going to try to drown me or something…I shouldn’t…but I want to…” A guarded expression crossed her face as she hesitantly picked her pace back up. “Hm. A river…sounds nice…” The white hound whispered. She followed Axel through the winding foliage and soon became deeply lost in thought. The femme was willing to be friends with this fiery hound; she liked his company even though he tormented her. It was true; Nyx was a masochist in her own special way. She knew, or at least strongly thought, that Axel would want nothing to do with her after this meeting, especially if he tried to kill her. A frown touched her lips. In the midst of her thinking she failed to notice the leftovers of a tree standing proudly in her way. She staggered forward, loosing track of the male for a brief moment. Listening closely, trying to pick up one of his strong, varied paw steps, Nyx found Axel’s path once more.
“Um…Axel?” Nyx’s diminutive voice rang out sweetly, “Do you have any friends?” She didn’t mean the question as an insult and hoped he wouldn’t take it that way. She just wanted to know if the hound was lonely and she wanted to tell him that he could easily make friends outside of his dark forest. He would have to quit some of his mean jokes, but she was sure that lots of hounds would enjoy his pranks.

"Yeah." There came a soft chuckle that clearly gave his position away in the night's silence. They were coming close now, the trickling of water reaching his ears. Axel slowed and allowed Nyx some catch-up time. "Make them everywhere I go. Thing is, they don't think so. It was a wry smile that adorned his shadow-filled face now. He had seen many faces before, several sticking out more than others in his memory, but none that really hit close to home at the time. It left him free of any restraints, at least.
At last the silvery stretch of water caught his eye, and the fiery hound paused on the bank, tossing a look over his shoulder to see if the ghostly little girl hadn't lost him in the maze-like forest. Somehow, he didn't feel the least bit guilty for tugging her along like this; well, he never did, but the thought did occur to him sometimes when he didn't have better things to think about. And that was rare. "Feeling thirsty?"

xThe sound of Axel’s chuckle brought a smile to Nyx’s face; it was contagious. She followed his laughter and caught a glimpse of him before he had started again. She was relieved to discover that he did not want to leave her behind just yet. She wanted to stay with Axel for at least a few more minutes, his enigmatic behavior fascinated her. The femme had spent her whole life trying to solve mysteries big or small. She often got herself in danger because of it. But they beckoned with a glow about their hands, calling her towards them relentlessly.
Axel was a mystery, too.
She saw him look over his shoulder and nodded towards him. “A little…” She whispered, walking over to the water’s edge. Modestly, the pale hound drank the shimmery liquid. She pulled her head up from the water and gazed forward. “Well...I think so.” She said very delicately in reply to Axel’s statement about friends. Her purple irises became fixated on the spot in the small river where the moon settled pompously.

In a sign of true manhood, Axel dunked his head and revelled in the cooling sensation of the water, taking a small gulp of it before jerking his head back needlessly and shaking it, droplets raining about the immediate area like miniature bursts of light under the pale light. His grin was crooked as a gnarled branch. "Whoops. Broke the moon again," he commented with a bark of laughter, gazing down at the many ripples he had cause that were now accosting the satellite's reflection and tearing off shards of milky white and yellow to carry away with them into the black water. "So, Nyx, got any friends sitting up in the middle of the night wondering where you are? Any family members fidgeting in their dreams? Enemies waiting to gut you with a pair of antlers next time you cross paths?"

xNyx watched the ringlets flutter through the water, savagely pulling the moon into pieces. She frowned a bit as the reflection gradually started to put itself back together. She longed to help the process but knew that any step she took into the ravaging liquid would just pull the pretty image apart once again. She sighed and looked to Axel, focusing on his question. “I don’t believe that anybody cares where I am…” She said in such a way to show Axel that she wasn’t looking for any kind of pity. “I’m not sure that I have friends close enough to miss me. I haven’t seen my family in a while. And maybe I have enemies, but they aren’t blatant about their hatred towards me if they do exist. I’m kind of…a nobody…” She trailed off with a frown, her feminine voice leaving a little resonance in the air.
She took another drink just in case she would have to leave soon. She wasn’t sure how long it would be before she found another place with water so clean and beautiful. A part of her wished to make this forest her home, but she knew that it wouldn’t be safe for her to settle anywhere. She wasn’t meant to have an official place to stay. At least, that’s what she believed so far. Without having a support system of friends or a close family, she wasn’t sure how well she would be able to socialize in a permanent place.

He appeared almost thoughtful at her words despite the constant grin, remnants of the river still drippingfrom his fur as he sat on his haunches, cautious as always of the spiked bangs about each paw as he settled. "Nobody, huh? Funny . . ." Axel chuckled, the slightest hint of true derision appearing for the first time that night. "So am I." That loopy old elf had said as much to him after the branding, cackling his head off. The hound never figured out how exactly he was able to understand that strange guy the few nights they were together and, quite frankly, he was sure he could sniff the culprit out in one of those sackbags he carried with him that reeked of smoke and tar and burnt leaves constantly. Axel snorted quietly at the memory.
