None of her business? Siiiiiigh. When would these new people learn? Everything at the Weyr was her business once she made it so! “But it is my business! Because I’m interested. And most people like talking to people who are genuinely interested in them and their business, you know. You won’t find very many people who will actually pay attention to you, not to mention offer to help you out with any problem and offer you advice.” Honestly, what was he thinking? Getting networked with Nan was exactly what he needed!

“And I wasn’t talking about the really, really young Candidates. That would just be weird on both parts… well, not all the time, but you know, most of the time.” There was the occasional whisper of riders getting together with candidates much younger than themselves (her own parentage was brought up into question sometimes) but if Marko said he wasn’t than he wasn’t. Until she proved him wrong. Coming to the Weyr always opened up doors for people who normally wouldn’t even dream of going through them. But that was Nan’s job. Opening doors and shoving people through before they could have second thoughts.

Ah, so that was what he was asking! She made a face. “The answer is simple: I like it. I like people, I like talking to them, and I like listening to them. Am I not allowed to be interested in you simply because I want to? Are you not a Harper because you like something about the profession?”

While 'most people' may have liked talking to people who were genuinely interested in them, Marko was finding the interest more than a little disconcerting. After all, there was the type of interested that invited people to talk to someone, and there was the type of interested that came off as...more than a little creepy. He wondered vaguely if Nan was aware that speaking so candidly to adults about their love life or preferences would be considered not only rude but completely unacceptable anywhere other than the Weyr (and that this seemed to him to be borderline unacceptable even at the Weyr), and decided she probably was and just didn't care. There was no changing the minds of people like that.

"While I appreciate the offer, I really do think I can get along fine without your help," he said, expression bordering on thoughtful as he answered the girl. When she spoke about Candidates and ages, he wondered if she knew how old he actually was, or that any Candidate age eighteen and under was young enough to be his child. Not that he really made much of a distinction between eighteen and twenty. And if Nan made any attempts to shove Marko through any doors, he was fairly certain she would find herself regretting it. It took a lot to ruffle Marko, but the longer he talked to Nan, the more he was certain she'd be able to manage it.

Her answer to his question was...surprisingly reasonable. It was hard to argue with her logic if you didn't realize that the parts she liked talking to people about were details that Marko, who had spent quite a lot of time in Weyrs since his childhood, found rather inappropriate for conversation. Though he did draw parallels between gossip and other crafts...there had to be a line. "...It makes sense, when you put it like that," he said, "but at the same time, if you aren't just talking and are...arranging," he paused and grimaced, "it might stop being an honourable cause." At least when it comes to me, he added silently.

It would be very challenging to nail Nandeli on a charge of rudeness, especially in Marko’s case. A shady gay Harper trying to convince the authorities that a seventeen turns old girl had cornered him in a dark classroom and proceeded to talk to him about love? There were reasons that she was still at the Weyr, still working on the kitchens, and still a Candidate despite her tendency to pry into people’s lives. Those who didn’t like her tended to avoid her, and those that weren’t fast enough took one for the team. That was just how things worked here at the Weyr.

When Marko said that he thought he could get along fine without her help she simply shrugged her shoulders. “Suit yourself.” He would be back soon enough, she reckoned. Not only did she have the connections, the charisma and the verbal prowess to convince virtually anyone that Marko was worth a shot, she also knew the dark corners of the Lower Caverns like the back of her hand. She was sure that he would be needing her assistance sometime in the near future. It would only be a matter of time (and she would be waiting).

“I’m not really arranging anything, just opening the doors to new possibilities,” Nandeli countered, though she didn’t bother to mention the bit about it being honourable. Who cared if it was honourable? All things were fair in love and war, and the same could be said about gossip. Marko had a lot to learn before he could even begin to understand her ‘craft.’ “But, I suppose I should keep moving.” She hoisted her basket up onto one hip again. “Enjoy your ‘alone time’!” Nan raised her eyebrows at him cheekily before she sauntered back out the way she had come in. Marko was safe… for now.

Marko watched her quietly as she left, shaking his head in something like bewilderment. That was not something that happened particularly frequently, and he rather hoped it wouldn't happen again...but something told him he couldn't count on that. No doubt he'd run into the girl in the future, and no doubt she'd be just as interested in him then. But...that wasn't important right now.

What was important was that she'd left and the classroom was still unoccupied. Marko wasn't going to take that for granted. He could puzzle over the girl some other time. For now, he would get some practice in. Opening the case and removing his flute again, he inspected it briefly, put it to his lips, and started to play.
