"Hey, what the hell?" Lucio galloped over to the shore of the lake, looking for any sign of Xiphi. Her plunge, however, kicked up a lot of mud from the bottom, and the lake was murky. He gave an annoyed snort and moved away from where she had submerged, wary of her jumping out.
"Fine, whatever. Stay down there," he muttered, much like a dejected child. Lucio daintily stuck his front hooves into the water, trying to wash them. He hated soggy bracers, but he hated stained ones even more.

Xiphi's nostrils spouted water as she emerged. She crawled onto shore looking completely revitalized. Mud fell in chunks from her flank as the water seemed to pull away. "Aaahh, so much better." She sighed, hooves sinking in the mud, approaching Lucio cautiously.
"Now... what were you saying about my disgusting race?" She grinned with a sarcastic tone, mud dripping from the fangs of her yellowing skull. "I haven't a clue why you would think that."

The disdain Lucio felt for Xiphi was obvious as he frowned at her, pulling his front hooves from the lake. He shook them free of water then began to slowly back away.
"You're just a case in point," he sniffed, eyeing the mud dripping from her. "I also know deltas lie a lot." At this, Lucio dropped his haughty air, replacing it with an accusing one. "And I hate when others lie to me," Lucio let the statement linger, but hoped Xiphi got the hint.

She got the hint. "Alas... all races are flawed with that characteristic." Xiphi cringed as the statement seemed to claw at her mind. The gray doe turned, encouraging a moment of silence as she lowered her form to relax on the bank. "I know I have wronged you in the past, and for that, I am forever in your debt. I hope you will forgive me." With her muddy tail curling around her frame, Xiphi let out a gentle sigh.

Why isn't she getting angry? Defensive? Something! Lucio glared down at Xiphi, feeling threatened by her calm attitude. He was silent for a moment, apparently thinking, then abruptly kicked mud at her.
"Forgive you?" he spat, baring his teeth, "Hell no! Who do you think you are?" He loomed over Xiphi, bristling, then turned away. Lucio couldn't think of what to say for his sudden outburst and gave a frustrated snarl instead.
He didn't know what to think of Xiphi, or even how to feel about her. He wanted to get to know her more, to befriend her, but couldn't even get past his own paranoia. And of course, such a clash of emotions only infuriated Lucio more.

Xiphi harshly recoiled as the muck hit her face. With intense effort, the snarl in her throat was suppressed. The doe remained silent for an uncomfortable amount of time. She thoughtfully watched the sun's rays dance on the water's surface. The hardening coat of mud she sported protected her from the heat, and the sun interrupted her concentration no longer.
Finally, she recollected from her thoughts and gazed towards Lucio.

The long stretch of silence wasn't what Lucio expected. He continued to look forward, with his head held high as though he was unperturbed and merely watching something in the distance.

In reality, he was incredibly tense, ears pulled back listening for any sign of movement from Xiphi. At any other time he might have admired the warmth of the sun on his fur, but a cold, heavy feeling settled in his stomach like a stone, only serving to keep him weighed down to his spot even more. A thousand thought raced through Lucio's mind, and none of them were good. But for once, he didn't feel angry. It was something different.

...Regret?

Now that made Lucio's temper flare. He looked at Xiphi over his shoulder, almost flinching when he saw that she was looking back. Instead, he spoke through clenched teeth.

"What?"

Lifting herself away from her short rest, Xiphi glanced ahead. "If my presence disgusts you so much... perhaps it would be best if I went home. It would save you much grief." The statement was partially a question as Xiphi tested the buck's interest in her once again. Half looking at Lucio with expectant eyes, and a gentle voice. Her ears idly flicked bugs from her view as she anticipated his reply.

Lucio looked away again, giving a frustrated sigh, before turning completely to look at her. His gaze was intense, voice harsh as ever.
"Good, alright! You've wasted enough of my time already. Hell, I wouldn't be the only one you'd be doing a favor for if you left."
He glowered at her, unmoving, fully expecting her to up and leave. He pushed back his own thoughts, ignoring the feeling that this was not what he wanted.

She shut her eyes, unintentionally mimicking his sigh. "As you wish. Let there be no hard feelings, Lucio." Xiphi turned away, and slowly, she made her way towards the Delta. "I hope our next meeting will be a pleasant one." Xiphi spoke quietly, almost in a whisper, as her travel across the grassland began.
