The white mare spoke truth, more truth than she knew. He had never in his life been to this forest. But the trail led here, and here he would go. He would never be lost as long as he could track the scent.
Truer than truth was her latter sentence. Even Fregit himself could not appreciate how true it was, but he would and could respond to it.
"Unusssual...yessss. But not a ssssslave," the snakelike Soquili almost spat the hissing word as he eyed the white mare's harness with distaste.

"A slave?" Elena was utterly baffled before she managed to follow the strange stallion's gaze to her saddle, her harness, her ribbons and chains and charms. His logic wasn't hard to follow, even if, from her point of view, it was flawed.
"I don't belong to anyone except myself," she told him, firmly.

Fregit watched the white mare as she defended herself and stood up to him. He began to reconsider his earlier evaluation. Clearly she was a more valuable gem than he had anticipated, harder and more resistance to cutting than most.
Even so, her response was ludicrous, while she wore the chains of slavery all over her body. The stallion's only response was a hoarse, hissing laughter that had a nasty knowledge behind it.

"It's true," Elena said, faintly defensive. "Whether or not you believe me. There's no one here who could ever claim to own me."
The topic was, she thought, probably a doomed one, a debate she could not win. She shuffled. "Why are you here?" she asked again.

The mare's stubborn naivete amused him greatly. Truly, she was more precious a gem than he had realized! She would be a worthy addition to his collection...and much easier to obtain than the last mare to interrupt his search.
"I...have lossst a precsssiousss gem. I musssst find it again," he replied. "My treassssure isss here, in thissss foressst."

"A precious gem?" Elena gave this a great deal of thought. There was very little that went on in this forest that she didn't see, or at least, she thought so. "What sort of precious gem? Maybe I've seen it."
She did enjoy being helpful.

The mare's white coat reflected the innocence and purity inside, like a diamond. Fregit knew he had to have her...but he had his priorities.
"My gem issss amethyssst and ruby, with a tiny bit of diamond. It issss adorned by gold and turquoisssse. Itsss lines are filled with gracsse and beauty. Have you ssssseen it?" The snakeline Soquili waxed lyrical and metaphorically about his treasure. It wouldn't do to alarm the mare before he was ready to add her to his collection.

That sounded... well, more like a lot of different gems, to be perfectly honest. A crown, or... or some piece of jewelry. That must be what he meant. "I don't think I've seen anything like that," Elena said, puzzled, and apologetic. "Not here. I mean... I don't leave the forest very much. But I haven't seen anything like that. I think I'd remember."

"Ssssuch a sssshame. I mussst continue to sssseek it, before ssssomeone elssse ssstealsss it away," he told the white mare. "It issss very precsssiousss to me."
He wasn't at all perturbed by her inability to help. He had the scent, and that was all he needed to find his treasure. And then...she would be his and only his. Then he would be free to enlarge his collection and add this diamond white mare to it.

"I hope you find it," Elena said, honestly. This was a bizarre, perplexing encounter, one of the most bizarre of her quiet, retiring life, but she couldn't bring herself to offer any sort of negative feedback, either.

A twisted smile played around Fregit's face. "Thank you for your kind wissshesss," he hissed in his whispery voice. "Perhapsss we sssshall meet again."
With that, he bent his nose back to the trail and returned to the delicate business of sorting through the many scents that lay there to find the one he sought. He was so close...so very close. Soon now. Soon he would reclaim his treasure and all would be right with the world.
And then he would make it better.

"Good luck," Elena said, still puzzled realising belatedly she'd never learned the stranger's name, but she turned and trotted off through the trees, trying to make sense of things, and failing.
