Please, PLEASE believe me when I say...

Okay my little children... time to learn about how to use what could possibly become one of your favorite tools: Dodge/Burn tool.
User Image

Scroll down and select highlight and dodge.
User Image

Hightlight were you think you should.

User Image
the line across her cheek is for the cheekbone... I might add some shading later underneath... I'll have to see. ^.^

Make it BIG!

User Image
Set the rate to 100%. And go back and forth all over the image, multiple times.

NOTE: Blur not working? It wasn't for me when I was blurring Steve's cloak. I had scrolled out too far. Try zooming in.

User Image
Okay, okay... I cheated and changed some things on the skin. I shaded the edge of the nose... but the thing I changed the most is the cheek.

I blurred first before I decided to change it.
I use the Color picking tool:
User Image
And picked a color between the normal skin color and the highlighted area, then made... that shape... >.< and blurred it again.

What do you think, Sefira?

When you're done tweaking it, erase 'excess'.
User Image

Aw Crap! I erased something I shouldn't have... most of the time I would just use the Undo history... but there is something else you can do.

User Image
The Smudge tool!! Just smudge the color onto the uncolored area, and it's done.

Now, I'm sure you noticed the Burn/Shadow option when you learned to Dodge/highlight. And I'm sure you looked at my instructions funny and asked yourself "Well, why didn't we just use the burn/shadow thingy instead of opening up the color option thingy and find two different colors?"
Well my dear friends, this is why:
User Image

Okay, now people, you need to go to make a new layer, title it 'Hair', because that's what we're doing next. If you decide to color it blonde or orange, you'll have to do the shading it like you did with the skin.
User Image

If you wanna be really fancy, add different colored 'strands' to the hair. Make sure you make the shadowed areas darker.
User Image

Use the Dodge/burn tool to hightlight:
User Image
With the top highlight, you may want to do vertical lines though the highlighted curve like the one above.

Then blur like a mad woman (or man) mrgreen :
User Image
(Holy crap that came out good!)

Now erase (and smudge... >.<).
User Image
bigger

Now, I'm doing the lips now... because the hair isn't anywhere near the lips, you can do it on the same layer.... You could make another layer if you want to though.
Now, pick a color and paint the lips.
User Image

Because the lips aren't yellow or orange, we can use the dodge/burn tool to shadow!! YAY!! Just chose Burn and shadow... and then shadow. You might want to go over it a few times (Click, hold down the mouse button when you go over it, reclick and do it again. If you just hold down the button and go over the area, it will not darken more than once per click.. does that make sense?)
User Image

How select Dodge and highlight and, well... highlight.
User Image

BLUR!!
User Image

Erase:
User Image

And this is what you get:
User Image
bigger

Now, I have to figure out how to show you guys how I do eyes... >.< Sefira's eyes are already colored....too small... crying

Okay, time to learn how to do an eye... Or at least the way I do an eye... sweatdrop
Okay, this is a quick sketch, so don't judge it too much... If you make a sketch, remember to make another layer to put the color on.
User Image

With the eye, no matter the color, you'll probably want to burn and shadow.

Okay, now the space... make a new layer for it and begin with the Free Select Tool. Make sure that black (I hesitate to use full black.. I usually use a slightly lighter color that can be darkened and highlighted) is either your Foreground color (the color box in front) or the Background color (the one behind). Use the free select tool to outline the objects in Space:
User Image

Connect the dots so you get a line.. thingy...:
User Image

Right click in the selected area, selected Edit, and fill with whatever color is black... or closest to black... >.< (does that make sense?)
User Image

Now select white and change the opacity of the paintbrush. Go over the dots/stars that Sefira has already drawn. If you want to be fancy (Or at least try like I did...>.> >.<), change the opacity again and chose another color (or more than one) and make small dots on the stars (kind of like to show the difference between different stars...).
User Image

Also!!! -totally just remembered this while she was typing-
There is a brush that you can use for this! It's called the sparks brush! Hold down for bigger sparks....
User Image

Now for the lasers: Make a new layer (you need a layer for each laser) and drag it under the space layer. Leave the layer setting at normal for now.
User Image

User Image
I ended up changing the color to blue at the end, so the next 2 pictures will be purple, but the end one will be blue.

User Image
(I mean Lasers.. Lasers!!! >.<)

User Image

Now change the Layer setting... you can either use:
Addition
User Image
Dodge
User Image

Play around with the layer settings on these. Something might look perfect to you and not so much to me... >.<

Whoa! Intense. Okay, I see how line art works best for this now... because of the overlays. I'll have to remember that, so as not to pencil in so much background and leave room for more color razz

The color of Space isn't dark enough? Or you paint something one color and decide you want it another?
NEVER FEAR!!!
Select by Color tool is here!!
User Image
Click the color you want to change, then either go over it with the desired color using the paintbrush or the bucket!

OKAY!! THE SPACE SHIP!!!
Pick a color... paint it that color.. >.<
User Image

Shadow the areas that Sefira has already indicated...^.^
User Image

Highlight the places the lazers LASERS touch...
User Image

Blur (if desired... If you're really good at shadowing, you might not want to...)
User Image

I recommend that you go to the layer that has 'Space' on it and change the opacity so you can tell the difference between space and the color of the ship:
User Image

Erase around it, change the opacity of space back and tadah!
User Image
You've got an evil looking ship.. ^.^

DRAGON!!!!
TRAGDOR
No.
You don't need to make a new layer because it's not touching the Spaceships.
Paint.
User Image

Shadow. Farther away from the fire, darker.
User Image

Highlight around the flames. I also did a line down his back... to give it more depth...
User Image

Blur
User Image

Clean up... you might want to change the Opacity of Space again...
User Image

Done!
