User Image Aleerna grimaced slightly before giggling at N'mar, "Some days it bothers me and other days it doesnt so I guess it just depends." she thought for a moment as she watched the two dragon's eat, "maybe it bothers me today cos I'm hungry?" she could feel her stomach growling but wasn't sure whether it was her own hunger or Sidheth's. "hmm yeah it must be that seeing as I haven't eaten in a couple of days."

She couldn't help but laugh as Sidheth ate, every now and then the Green would carefully rub her nose clean before diving back into her meal, making even more of a mess.

"I know that some people find it disgusting but I guess it's something that you have to get used to. I surpose that as a dragonrider it's something that shouldn't bother me." she sighed but smiled, "yeah, they do which is the most imprtant thing!"

N'mar barely even heard the rest of what Aleerna was saying, all of his sensory input ceased at the words "haven't eaten in a few days." His mouth dropped open as far as it would go, his shoulders slumped, his hands relaxed and fell open, his head listed slightly to one side. If it had been summer a bug could have flown directly down his throat and he wouldn't have reacted, so great was his shock. N'mar, who ate nearly his own body weight every day, simply couldn't fathom the concept. After Alreth warned him not to start drooling, N'mar snapped out of it and shook his head rapidly - the action vaguely resembled a dog clearing water from its ears.

"I'm sorry, did you say... WHAT?" He was still staring at Aleerna as if he had never seen anything like her. Alreth swooped into the air and brought down another herdbeast, gurgling happily. "Did you say DAYS?! You haven't eaten in DAYS?! By Faranth's great golden egg shell, whyever not?"

User Image Aleerna stared at N'mar, surprised and slightly amused by his reaction. Even Sidheth looked up momentarily before thrusting her head back in to what little was left of her wherry. Aleerna continued to stare at N'mar, her eyes wide as he seemed to go limp.

"Um yeah, I haven't eaten in maybe two or three days I guess." Aleerna said, now somewhat puzzled by N'mar's reaction, "Um I haven't really been hungry. I mean I haven't been very um, well I guess. I was kind of miserable and when I'm unhappy I don't get hungry." she shrugged, not really understanding his shock, "it's not the longest I've been without food so it's not big deal really." next to them Sidheth finally polished off her wherry and settled down to pick clean her claws.

"But - but-" N'mar blinked and rubbed his neck, still confused.

She is like us - she doesn't feel the need to consume food as often as you.

Humans need to eat every day, we aren't built like dragons!

"But Aleerna," he said, his tone as whiney as any child, "You need to eat, it's not healthy to go so long without food! Especially when you're a weyrling! They'll have you on your feet all day, running around here and there... how can you do that on an empty stomach?" He finished in a disbelieving, slightly indignant tone. "Right! Tonight I will personally find you and escort you through dinner and you will have a proper meal with a balance of food groups. Dragonriders," he said, shaking his finger at her, "Do not go hungry in their own weyrs. And as a fully qualified rider I am responsible for you as a weyrling." N'mar grinned, perfectly normal now that he knew the situation was going to be remidied, determined not to accept no for an answer.

What did I just finish telling you about manners? A 'please' would not have gone amiss. Alreth said, cleaning off his face with Zavir's help. Do you wish for any more? He asked, turning to Sidheth.

User Image Aleerna shrugged again, smiling softly at N'mar's confusion, "I've never been one to eat a great deal. I've never been bothered by going without food for a while so it doesn't matter."

So how is it that you have grown tall? Sidheth asked as she sat carefully cleaning her claws, useing the snow to wash them. Aleerna shrugged and grinned as N'mar went on about the trials of being a Weyrling.

An irrational terror suddenly filled Aleerna as she thought about going to dinner. Since the feast she hadn't spoken to any of the other Weyrlings, even Minno. She was still petrified that Fal'n would be mad at her. It was one of her only fears, having people mad at her for something she said. Sidheth crooned softly, butting her now clean head against Aleerna's leg reassuringly.

I am fine now thank you. Sidheth said to Alreth without looking around from where Aleerna stood, frozen by her sudden fear. I ate not long ago so this has filled me up for now.

N'mar tilted his head slightly to one side, a little puzzled. It was clear that Aleerna was suddenly troubled by something; her dragon's behavior not withstanding, she also looked decidedly nervous. What had he done to upset her?

A gust of wind and the sound of leathery wings heralded Alreth's approach, and the dragon landed with a thump in the snow behind N'mar.

Yes, she is very frightened all of a sudden. Sidheth is comforting her.

Did I do something wrong? Alreth had no answer for him. Zavir landed on Sidheth's back and sat down, looking up at Aleerna and chirruping questioningly. Maybe she's just sensitive about her eating habits.

"Umm, hey now," N'mar said, grinning sheepishly and extending a hand to take Aleerna's shoulder. "You don't have to go to dinner with me; I was just worried, that's all."

User Image The sudden rush of air swirling around her as Alreth landed helped to pull Aleerna from her terror. She took a great shuddering breath and crouched next to Sidheth, wrapping her arms around her dragon's neck.

"It's n-not you," Aleerna whispered, reaching one hand up to where Zavir was perched on Sidheth's back and scratching him under the chin, "I just don't want to have people mad at me, and if I go to dinner there might be someone who's mad at me." she could feel tears welling up in her eyes and sniffed, "I-I accidently insulted one of the other Weyrlings at the Hatching feast, I didn't mean to, but I wasn't thinking about what I was saying and I was rude. It's the one thing I've always been scared of, having people mad at me. I know it's silly and childish but I can't help it!" Aleerna couldn't stop the words rushing from her, it just felt so wonderful to be able to tell someone else, she sniffed again.

She is frightened and I do not really understand why. Sidheth's tone was unhappy as she rubbed her head against Aleerna.

"I don't think it's silly. If you're upset this much it's at least serious to you, and that makes it serious in general. Because no matter what anyone else says it's your own perspective on things that makes feelings real or not." N'mar said, trying to both comfort and distract Aleerna. Alreth approved, settling down and burrowing a trench for himself in the snow. "Take me, for example. People say that any reprimands thrown my way simply bounce off my hide," N'mar grinned, "But that's not true - I listen if it comes from the weyrleaders." His grin was impudence in itself.

Zavir hopped forward, curling his tail gently around Sidheth's neck so that he could lean forward and press the side of his face against Aleerna's cheek. Zavir was quite a sweetheart, always ready to lend a hand.

"Look, if you're really worried that much you can just stick by me. I'll protect you," N'mar finished, drawing himself up to his full height and speaking with earnest honesty. "No one on Pern'll hurt you while I'm on duty." He finished, raising a fist proudly.

User Image Aleerna sniffed again and tried to smile, "thanks N'mar. I know I have to do something about it, I can't hide forever, especially seeing as the person I insulted is a Weyrling, I'm going to have to face him eventually. I'm just a coward I guess."

You are not a coward, I chose you to be my rider and I would not have chosen a coward. Sidheth nudged Aleerna and crooned softly. No dragon would ever choose a coward and I am no different.

Aleerna smiled again, this time it was more real. She sat back slightly and rubbed at her eyes. "Thanks Sidheth, and you too Zavir." her eyes widened slightly at N'mar's words, "you would really look out for me?" she whispered, "you would really?" her face brightened slightly, "thank you, thank you N'mar! And thank you for listening to me, It felt so good to be able to tell someone!" she paused then asked tentatively, "and if the offer's still open I wouldn't mind having you escort me at dinner."

"Sure thing! You could take Bitran odds on that bet!" N'mar held out his hand in a silent offer to help Aleerna to her feet. "And of course the offer's open. I wouldn't have made it at all, otherwise." He tilted his head a little to one side. "So no more crying?" Everything seemed to be on either one end of the extremes or the other with this girl, N'mar thought to himself. She was either very upset or very pleased over something inconsiquential. Still... he kind of liked that in her. It was nice to meet someone who felt things so keenly and put so much feeling into everything. It was...

Refreshing?

Perfect. Thanks.

User Image Aleerna smiled and accepted N'mar's hand to her help her to feet. "Thanks, I probably should eat tonight. So it's a good thing that you'll be there to force me to eat!"

No more crying? Sidheth asked at the same time as N'mar.

"Nope no more, all done for now!" Aleerna face was bright again, although her eyes were still slightly bloodshot. She stretched and smiled happily, "and maybe after a while I'll be able to work up the courage to say sorry to Fal'n, he's the one I insulted. Thanks again N'mar for being so nice to me!" she scratched Zavir under his chin and reached her other hand towards Alreth, "thanks Alreth as well, for being nice to me and for hunting for Sidheth." She paused as I sudden though occured to her, "Oh shards, Im going to have to oil you again now aren't I?' she suddenly exclaimed looking at a slightly smug Sidheth.

Of course, I always need oiling after I eat. there was no apology in Sidheth's tone and Aleerna giggled, her unhappiness pushed to one side, though not forgotten.

Alreth obligingly shifted his snout forward slightly and allowed Aleerna to touch him, blinking a little as he regarded her.

You are quite welcome. The pleasure is mine.

N'mar grinned at Aleerna's dismay. "Well, oiling is a very important part of caring for a dragon. Cracked hide can kill between. Besides," He pulled both his arms up above his head and stretched, cracking his neck in the process, "It's a good opportunity to spend time with your dragon, even if your arms feel like they're about to fall off. It's a pity it's winter, now. There's nothing better than swimming with your dragon on a hot day. They love it, and they're easier to oil down afterward." N'mar walked over to Alreth and settled down leaning against the brown's neck. He gestured beside him vaguely, tweaking an eyebrow at both Sidheth and Aleerna in silent invitation. Zavir made a brief flight onto the top of Alreth's head and curled up between his eyeridge and head nob.

User Image I am itching, you should oil me now. Sidheth stated, buttin her head against Aleerna's thigh, iching is bad, I do not like itching.

"No but you sure do like being oiled!" Aleerna said with a good-natured sigh. "I do like oiling her, it makes her so happy and that makes me happy." she said to N'mar as Sidheth nudged her again, "I don't mind so much now, although I'm kind of dreading it as she starts to grow bigger, it'll take forever. I suppose I should be grateful that I dont have a Gold, shards they would take forever to oil when their fully grown!" another nudge almost toppled her over into the snow and she lightly swated Sidheth on the nose, "don't be rude please Sidheth, I know your itching but just be a little patient please?"

But I am itching.

Aleerna sighed again, although she was smiling, "I'm sorry to have to cut short our time together, I've really enjoyed myself, butmy little missy here is anxious to get oiled so I have to be off!" Sidheth began pushing her from behind, making her stumble along in the snow, "do you want to meet somewhere before dinner, or do you want to come to the Weyrling barracks and get me?" she was half yelling as Sidheth pushed her further and further from them.

N'mar burst out laughing at Sidheth's antics, watching the pair of them on their way off. "I'll meet you outside the barracks later tonight. Zavir will find you when I'm there!" He shouted the last few words as Aleerna was shrinking quickly thanks to Sidheth's insistant prodding.

"Now that's an interesting pair," he said to Alreth, leaning back again.

Mmmm-hmm. Was Alreth's only comment as he swiveled his head around to lay it near N'mar. Zavir was much more vocal about his approval, chittering his usual nonsense syllables and looking after the weyrlings.

--------

As the night sky darkened Alreth leapt from his weyr ledge high up along the cliff of the weyr. N'mar, up on his back, was dressed lightly but releished the cold. As a runner he had often delayed switching to heavy clothes until blizzard season, so the winds that pressed against him were exhilarating and not chilling. Alreth did not bother flapping. The pair were high enough that they could simply glide down to the barrack's enterance. N'mar had sent Zavir on ahead with instructions to find Aleerna and tell her that he was on his way. Alreth landed and galloped a few paces forward to ease off the leftover momentum before stopping completly and looking back at N'mar, his eyes glowing blue jewels in the gathering dark.

She comes. Zavir has found her.

N'mar swung one leg casually over Alreth's neck and slid down the dragon's leg on his butt, bending his knees a little on the landing to soften it.

I will go to the heights. The night is clear. Alreth said and took off to find a perch. N'mar relaxed backward onto one foot and waited for Aleerna to appear, his stomach vocalizing in anticipation of dinner.

User Image Aleerna giggled as she watched Sidheth wriggle around on her stone couch, trying to get comfortable, her tail sweeping back and foraward, kicking up dust and making Aleerna realise that she really needed to sweep out her cot.

You have a visitor. Sidheth said as she finally got comfortable. Aleerna glanced around to the entrance of the cot as she finished running her comb through her hair. A second later Zavir darted into the room.

"Looks like it's time for me to head off," she said, reaching out to scratch Zavir's head. She was dressed for dinner in casual clothes with a thick jacket over her shoulders. Coming from the warm weather in Southernboll she was still getting used to the cold.

Have fun. Sidheth replied sleeply, well-fed and olied, all the green wanted now was to sleep.

Aleerna smiled tenderly, stroking the prominate eye-ridges briefly before following Zavir out of the Weyrling barracks and into the cold night. She shivered sightly, pulling her jacket tightly around her.

N'mar was waiting for her and she smiled brightly as she walked up to him, "good evening N'mar," she greeted him, curtseying and giggling.
