Not all divinations work for everyone. It has to do with what you are most comfortable with.
For example some are great at scrying but only certain types of scrying. And tarot with only certain types of decks

AniMajor Love to Paint AniMajor Trying to make sense of random patterns just doesn't work for me. Like flames, tea leaves, or water. I just don't see anything there. But I can use Tarot cards, playing cards, music, or just reading people. How do you use music, please share! I feel a little silly explaining this, because it feels a little silly to use it. It's nothing really spectacular, at least not how I do it. I supposed it depends on the type of music, but I've got a huge collection of mp3s on my computer, so I pick a bunch that I like and some random ones that I haven't listened to at all. I put them on shuffle, press "next" a few times, and then "play" without looking at the list. And then the songs tell me the story of what I asked. It sometimes helps to look up lyrics and meanings. I used to be able to do it with orchestral music, but I don't listen to it that often. It was a slightly different process, where it was trying to see the picture in the music, then finding meaning in that. Most of that, though, was internal stuff, and I haven't used it to ask about other people. I do this with my ipod in the morning on my way to school. It's nice to find someone else who does this.

I used to do something similar with music on the radio when I was a kid (it involved turning the dial on the radio and whatever song was playing on the station I landed on was it). I never thought about trying it with my iPod now..I will have to give that a shot.
I have trouble water scrying on purpose. I can't do it in a bowl by candle light, I have to do it looking into a river or pond.
Runes have never been very effective for me either.

You have just brought it into the digital age!!! I've also tried doing it with books, but I think since my library was so limited it never turned out very well.

Meditation
I know that sounds broad
But the group I work with say they just meditate to help divinate.
I can't, I just can't sit there and meditate and focus I have to do an active divination

Troubleshooting for Valdune:
Sometimes divination don't work for me because I have too much on my mind, or I feel too strongly about a topic and I can't clear my mind enough to focus. Sometimes the best way for me to deal with this is either have someone else do it for me, or give myself some time. (we are talking days)
I feel that sometimes just three days sitting on a topic, or something that bothers you, or something you need an answer about, is enough time for your mind to fully think about something, so your not nervous, raging, upset or biased about something. Then divination's work better. Also, within that time, a lot happens. You discover things about the world around you, more about people's situation, and sometimes the thing that you're doing a divination resolves itself, be a question you wanted to ask or traveling.
