"You're on mine, too," Grayson replied, though he didn't dig the phone out again. Ignacio would just have to trust his word - why wouldn't he? - because Gray was very much occupied with his lunch. They hadn't offered hot dogs, but the burger was pretty decent.

Eating was serious business to the darkest haired member of their trio, so Dani took it upon herself to carry the conversation with Ignacio. She hadn't missed his perusal, however, and she was not impressed by it. "Of course you learn new things, they're just things that have built on the basics, like math, or more detail to things you already knew, like history."

She rolled her eyes as if this was common sense. Dani was a fan of eye-rolling, apparently. "But yeah, school is pretty boring. I mean, I'll get good grades so I can get into a good college, but that doesn't mean it isn't boring."

Ignacio was occupied with his lunch, but for other reasons. He was eating like a shrew at the moment, practically shoving half his food in his mouth. It certainly wasn't helping his attempts to appear attractive, but perhaps he didn't care. He was hungry. The hamburger was gone within less than a minute and he moved on to something else, but he was still managing to keep up conversation.

"Meh, I don't even care about good grades anymore. I'm a second semester senior. What are they going to do to me, flunk me? I figure, as long as I do mediocre, I'll still get out of this semester with a C and then I can go somewhere with dorms." Yes, dorms would be nice. As much as Ignacio was getting used to this whole 'being a bum' idea, he wouldn't mind the idea of having a more permanent roof over his head. It wouldn't be long until the security guards caught on that he was sleeping inside the school.

Ignacio moved on to finishing his apple at this point, taking brief breaks in-between bites to enjoy the juices that ran down his throat. "So. Is there any reason why you kept observing me in the hallway besides for me being a new student?" That question was sudden, but the smirk on his face showed that he really wasn't willing to let go of it that easily. His ego begged for answers.

Because he was pretty attractive. Even a teenage girl with mega doses of 'tude couldn't deny that.

Oh, but she could. Dani so could.

Ignacio was so far from her type that it was almost laughable; while he fit the criteria of older, but not too old, he was too pale, too freckled, too entirely full of himself. A more self-aware person would have realized that she didn't want another rampant ego battling her own for time and attention, but Dani wasn't that self-aware. She simply thought that he wasn't her type and was satisfied with that because she'd found someone she figured was. She just had to convince him of that particular truth and everything would be fine and dandy.

"I was looking at you -- which, you know, you just happened to catch me looking, so if I was staring so were you -- because I didn't recognize you." She took a bite of her apple, chewed a moment, swallowed. "Also, I thought you might be the guy everyone said was dating one of the other new guys, so I was curious."

That was Dani for you. Straightforward and (mostly) honest, except when it served her to be otherwise.

She slanted Gray a look, amused. "I'm thinking you're the guy everyone thought he was dating."

Grayson paused in his careful attention to his burger, eyebrows raised. He didn't sound offended, just puzzled, as he said, "That's silly. We aren't dating; Ignacio isn't my type, and I'm sure I'm not his."

He turned then, knees nearly knocking into Ignacio's, and smiled gently. He figured he was letting his friend off the hook easily by offering an excuse. "Right?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:30 pm

Wait, what?

People thought he was dating Grayson?

Ignacio laughed heartily, setting down his apple so he could laugh without choking. In fact, he almost laughed it off too much, bordering the line of sounding completely and utterly fake. His laughter calmed when Grayson bumped knees with him; it distracted him more than he would have liked, but then again, most contact from attractive people tended to do that, and Ignacio was in no denial that Grayson was attractive.

Even if he was in denial of other factors, and probably would be for a while to come. "Yeah," replied Ignacio, looking at Grayson with amusement. "He's totally not my type." But he couldn't find any way to justify that, and the concept was sour in his mouth. That probably just came from the fact that Grayson was attractive, though. That was it. Anyone who was attractive was Ignacio's type, because Ignacio was rather shallow when it came right down to it. Right? Right. He was a shallow man of simple pleasures and that wasn't deniable.

"Besides," added Ignacio, trying to find reasons to justify why Grayson 'wasn't his type,' "I'm really not up for dating people at the moment. A lot of things have gone down recently, and I need to deal with those first." He assumed Grayson would assume he was referring to Barren Pines. That was fine with him. That was what Ignacio honestly wanted him to assume.

He'd wanted to make things less than awkward for all of them.

He hadn't expected Ignacio to laugh outright at the thought they were dating. It surprised him, and it hurt a little bit, and not just because he found himself physically attracted to Ignacio. He was physically attracted to a lot of people; it was a weak basis for anything, and something that was easily buried, easily put aside. No, it hurt a bit because he really liked Ignacio and considered him a friend.

The outright denial of any interest in him didn't bother him, really, and he thought they could be friends easily enough despite it. It was just that he thought it was so funny. It wheedled away at Grayson's confidence, had the smile on his face faltering just a bit before he tucked it away, closed his eyes with a grin.

"Right," Grayson finally said, shifting so that his knees were straight once more. He brought his fist up, leaned his cheek against it casually. Hid his face from Ignacio? "We're friends, but we'll never be more than that."

Dani eyed them both skeptically, bright green eyes darting from one to the other, then settled on Grayson once again when he added, "And I'm not really looking to date, either. I have... a lot going on right now."

Understatement of the year.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 08, 2010 11:18 pm

"Right, never." And somehow, his mouth felt dry.

So instead, Ignacio would glance over to Grayson and wonder what his a lot going on actually was. It couldn't be Organ Pines. They had suffered Organ Pines, but as painful as it was it was over and new issues had to be surfacing. What were Grayson's? They couldn't be familial problems; Ignacio was the one with familial problems, and the Graves family seemed to be pretty stable and cheerful.

Did Ignacio look honestly worried? It was a bit odd that a man with as large of an ego as his own could go from laughing so heartily at the idea of ever being more-than-just-friends with Grayson to looking at him with the look of a concerned lover. But the glance was gone soon enough, as Ignacio returned to his food, with a silence in the air so awkward he could cut it with a steak knife.

Though steak knives made him think of Saw, and thinking of Saw brought back the dry feeling in his mouth. "Maybe dating will come up after things clear up." That was an odd comment. A really odd comment. Yet, somehow, it made his mouth less dry, so Ignacio went with it. "Things can always change." And that was odder.

Ignacio would let it go for the moment. "Why does everyone think we're dating, anyway? Two men can be close. It's not unusual."

Never was a damning word, a word that could write history and predict the future all at once; they would never, they said, and Grayson's heart believed it. So, he nodded along with what Ignacio said, fought back the hurt and replaced it with calm acceptance. He hadn't felt much for Ignacio, anyhow, beyond friendship; the beginning of attraction, but that was fine. He'd snuffed that in the past, he would ignore it now.

It was worth much more to have a friend than to lose one over something silly like that, anyway.

"I don't know," Gray answered thoughtfully, then stuffed his mouth full of apple to avoid saying any more. The simple answer was, people were suspicious of everything nowadays and so two guys hugging and exchanging meaningful looks generally meant a homosexual relationship, but he really didn't want to get into that.

He also didn't want to make Ignacio burst into hearty laughter at the thought, again.

Thankfully, Dani took control of the conversation, saying breezily, "Well, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. You two know you're not dating, ever, so it's fine. Everyone else will figure it out eventually."
PostPosted: Fri Jan 08, 2010 11:54 pm

"I mean, that's not true. It might not be never. I mean, Grayson's really nice. And attractive. And generous." And WHAT the ******** was he saying now? Ignacio shut himself up by rapidly opening up his breakfast bar and shoving half of it in his mouth, making his cheeks comically puffy as he attempted to chew the massive amount of food.

It gave him time to think.

His mouth tended to go go go before his brain caught up, and this was no exception. What the ******** had he just said? Yes, Grayson was nice. Generous. Attractive. Really attractive. Really generous. Oddly generous. Ignacio started tapping his foot nervously and glancing at the ceiling as if it held some kind of answer to the questions he was asking himself. Maybe he just didn't want to make Grayson feel bad that Ignacio didn't like him. Yeah, that was it. He didn't want to make Grayson feel bad, because Grayson was too generous to ever feel bad about anything. He simply didn't deserve it, never deserved it, Ignacio wanted to block him from what made him feel sour on the inside...

...But that didn't quite sit right either. s**t. Ignacio scrunched his nose in baffled confusion with himself before swallowing hard, glancing over to Grayson once again. And there was the urge to look at him fondly, to take his hand and to tell him to stop shoving food in his mouth so he could stick his lips there WHAT

Oh gawd, this was getting awkward.

"Right. I retract the never. That was... silly. I hate big words like never. Never is... never. It means too much. And too little. And," Ignacio was rambling. Again. Except this time he seemed oddly nervous, like he felt like he was making a mistake of some sort.

But he wasn't sure WHY.

Grayson was confused as to why Ignacio was still going on about the whole scenario, except for maybe his friend felt bad about his obvious and honest reaction, and was now trying to make him feel better. He was grateful for the effort, and he showed it in a short, fond smile when Ignacio happened to look his way.

So they could be friends after all, and easily. If Ignacio was going to this much trouble to attempt to make things right, it meant he at least cared. "Well, thank you, Ignacio. You're being too kind, I think," he said with a light laugh, shaking his head.

Definitely, his friend was going overboard. Grayson knew he was moderately attractive, reasonably generous, kind when he could be. He was also lazy and irresponsible, and he put others first to avoid his own problems. His good traits were not born from simple goodness, but he supposed that was true of almost everyone; he just had different motivations from most.

"It's okay, though." He wiped his mouth with his napkin, took a drink of his milk.

Dani, who had been suspiciously quiet throughout the exchange, finally piped up. "Do either of you do sports?"

Apparently, she'd decided it was time to change the subject. Still, she shot Ignacio a very, very suspicious look as she asked.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 09, 2010 12:19 am

"I'm not being too kind, Gray. I mean it. And I mean that I took the never back," replied the jittery Ignacio, who cut off his rambling in an attempt to recover whatever he had just said. Something about Dani reaffirming that they would never ever date hit him. What had he said? Why did he care? Why did it matter? Why did he suddenly have the urge to sweep Grayson in his arms and say, I'm serious, Gray, my darling? None of it made sense.

Why was he so jittery and nervous all the sudden?

Had he actually screwed something up? Something up that he wasn't even willing to acknowledge? Ignacio looked a little desperate, if anything.

The subject change was, however, welcomed. "Not really," admitted Ignacio. "Nothing regular. I certainly like playing basketball, though. It's a fun sport. Probably should be a little taller so I can actually attempt slam dunks, but it's okay. I'm not that short." Ignacio wasn't really looking at Dani, as much as he was obviously addressing her question. His eyes were elsewhere, searching for something, groping for mental answers or something of the sort...

Groping for some kind of acknowledgement that maybe he hadn't permanently screwed something potential up forever. ...Why did he care? ...Why did it matter that he cared? Maybe he just wanted to see Grayson happy. If he wanted to do that, though, wouldn't have the flailing have been enough?

Ignacio was so utterly baffled. There would be a lot nagging him in the rest of his classes.

Grayson wanted to let the subject drop, because if anything, Ignacio's insistence was making him feel a little bit awkward. So, he simply smiled and nodded, looking for all the world like it didn't mean a thing to him either way. Never, ever, they were just words, his expression seemed to say. Nothing to get worked up about, nothing to worry about.

Except Grayson knew better than anyone it was words that cut the deepest, that went straight for the heart and sliced viciously. It was words that could scar where no one would see, that made wounds bleed long after they should have healed properly.

He welcomed the subject change as well, shifting his focus to Dani and lifting his shoulders in a shrug at the question. After Ignacio spoke, he offered, "I don't really do sports. Too lazy to commit," he added, grinning. "Though I do love football."

Dani brightened then, looking between them, rather excited. "You guys should totally come watch some games with me, then. Hillworth and Meadowview have this fierce rivalry going, it's awesome."

Ignacio knew better too. Wars were won and wars were lost on words. Treaties were made of words. Life was made of words, because they were the only way people knew how to describe things. But sometimes... words weren't stronger than body language. So, quietly, Ignacio patted Grayson's shoulder affectionately and squeezed his shoulder before letting his arm rest back at his side. Maybe, if nothing else, that would get his point across.

And despite Ignacio's inner turmoil, he moved on like nothing had happened.

"That sounds familiar," offered Ignacio, with a slightly easier chuckle than his nervousness was letting him have earlier. This would be fine, right? Grayson understood, right? No, no, no, stop it. Act normal. "I'd love to watch some games with you sometime, Dani. Gray," he turned towards Grayson, attempting a slightly bigger grin, "it'll be fun, right? We could get you some hot dogs from the vendors, I'm sure. On me."

Okay, maybe not quite normal. He had a lot of making up to do.

Grayson was surprised by the pat and the squeeze, but he only showed it in a brief lifting of his eyebrows. He well and truly wanted to put the awkward conversation behind them; as far as he was concerned, they'd made up their minds, and Ignacio was now trying to make amends. He could be a little bit disappointed for the loss of what might have been, but he was glad that he would still have a friend in Ignacio. That was what mattered most, at the end of the day. It was what he struggled for with Jude, Topher, Barnaby. Simple friendship, something so easily caught and held, was his dearest wish.

Because it got awfully lonely inside his head.

"I'd like to watch the games," he agreed, hands braced on the bench at either side of him. His shoulders lifted inward, a passable shrug. "Just text me and let me know when. And then come get me," he added, knowing himself far too well to even pretend that he would make it to a sporting event that wasn't professional of his own accord.

At the mention of hot dogs his eyes brightened, and he slanted Ignacio a grin. "I do love hot dogs. Ballpark ones are the best, loaded."

Thinking of it, he sighed wistfully. What he wouldn't give for a hot dog instead of the tater tots and half an apple that were on his tray just then.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 09, 2010 1:28 am

Grayson looked surprised. Ha! So he had done something. Take that, stupid piece of shitty word Never! That gave Ignacio a point in the favor of body language saying a hell of a lot more than words. Words said never, Ignacio's eyes said forever. And so did his squeeze. Ooh, that sounded romantic. Time to give himself a point or two, but who was keeping track?

...Ignacio was, apparently. And he tacked on another point at Grayson's delight with hot dogs. Who said that food wasn't the way into a man's heart? The way into his heart was a little different, but Grayson was a lazy creature. He also liked food, apparently, with the way he was eating and the way he was sighing so happily at the mention of hot dogs... yes, Ignacio had a way back in here.

He had a way back in. "Great. Then it's a date." A date. Odd choice of words, Ignacio, but he seemed to be ignoring that with the way he went back to eating, humming to himself in a bit of a better mood than before. He could conquer Never. Just wait, Never. Ignacio had a lot in store for Never, and its connvining ways.

It would just have to be seen if his methods worked.

If Grayson thought it was a little mean-spirited to refer to the outing as a date, he didn't show it. If the thought occurred to him, it was dismissed quickly by the logic that it was a common term, and he clearly hadn't meant it, considering it was the three of them who would be going to the event. It was a bit careless for word choice, but Gray could forgive it. He could forgive a lot of things.

The bell chimed, making him look up with some regret. He still hadn't finished his tater tots.

"We'd better get going," Dani said, rising and keeping to herself on the events that had transpired. For now. Who knew what wheels were turning behind those big green eyes?

Grabbing the tots, Grayson wiggled his way out from his sitting position, carefully balancing his tray in the other hand. He smiled at Dani, saying, "See you around." as she flounced away.

To Ignacio, he smiled as well, though it was a bit confused around the edges. "See you in Lit, right?" It was the period after next.
