Nikki pointedly ignored his geekery as they trudged up the trail. The snow only getting deeper, and the wind more intense as they went. It was up to her knees when Hayes decided to speak up.

Not really having any intent on stopping, because she wanted to cover as much ground as possibly as quickly as they could. Annoyed, Nikki turned to look behind her, as she kept going.

"What now?!" she asked in a shout over the wind. Her next step proving to be unfortunate. WHUMP! She suddenly disappeared into the white.

Just great.

Hayes' boots squeaked on the already packed snow as he made use of the trail Nikki had blazed. He couldn't see her, just where she had vanished, and he placed his feet carefully in spots he knew to be stable, i.e. where she had gone before.

He reached the end of Nikki's footprints and, bracing one hand against his knee, offered the other to the fallen girl, or at least the spot where the girl had fallen.

"..I was going to say this looked like a good spot for snowshoes," he called, whether she let him help her up or no. Despite raising his voice to be heard over the wind that bayed like a pack of Houndoom, he managed to sound mildly apologetic - as if his partner's tumble into the snow might be his fault (but not really.)

There was some movement beneath the white and eventually a snow covered head popped out. Along with a hand that indignantly slapped at Hayes' gentlemanly offer to help her out.

"I don't need your help!" she protested. "And you could have said that sooner!"

Her boots were wedged in deep, making it difficult to pull them out. Thus, when she tried to get herself out of the hole she'd made, she ended up falling back again.

A string of curses exiting her mouth at the same time.

Not one to oppose a lady's wishes, Hayes pulled his hand back, though not out of easy reach. Most of his face wasn't visible, but his eyes were creased with concern - or, possibly, amusement - as he watched Nikki flounder in the powdery bank.

A minute passed, during which the air amazingly failed to turn blue from profanity.

Hayes felt compelled to say something at this point.

"You sure?"

"Yes!" Nikki shouted in exasperation as she tried to pull her boots out of the snow. Successfully managing to pull her foot out of a boot instead. Growling in irritation, she pushed her foot back in, but not without some snow getting in. Cold!

Wiggling her feet around, she tried to loosen the snow up before managing to slowly pull them out. The upper part of her body lurching out of the hole, and her arms reaching out to grab a sapling as she pulled and heaved herself out.

Huffing and puffing from the exertion, she lay there for a second, glaring up at Hayes. "Not one word."

With that, she finally got up and dusted the snow off of her. See? She could do it herself. All by herself.

The Rocket didn't press the issue. Instead he straightened up, wrestled out of his pack, and balanced it on the tops of his boots while he unhooked his snowshoes from the side. Leaning the pack against the sapling, he stepped into the snowshoes and tightened the straps.

He only made sidelong glances at what he was doing, since his attention was mostly on Nikki and her ridiculous winter gymnastics. By the time she hauled herself up next to him, out of breath and out of sorts, he'd straightened up and was pulling his gloves back on.

Silence would be sass, so Hayes just slung his pack over his shoulders and aimed a thumb in the direction of the peak.

"I'm ready when you are."

Nikki didn't respond as she regathered her dignity and situated herself. Eventually pulling her own pair of snowshoes off her backpack and putting them on. Thus making Hayes wait for several minutes before she was finally ready.

"Okay, let's go." Acting as if nothing had ever happened, she then trudged through the snow and around the large hole she had created just moments earlier.

Her sights went back to the peak, trying to ignore the fact that one of her feet was now wet and cold. There was still quite a ways to hike yet, and so far there was no sign of the arctic bird.

Hayes took the opportunity to eat a bar of trail mix.

Once Nikki got her snowshoes on, he stuffed the wrapper in his pocket and followed silently in her wake, using his trekking poles to help him maneuver up the slope and avoid the deceptively shallow-looking dips. It would be fruitless to strike up a conversation, absurd to even inquire about the weather. Especially to inquire about the weather.

As so often happens, it had gotten worse.

Halfway up the mountain visibility had decreased to the point that Nikki's form was a blurry shape sliced through with white, and Hayes was feeling for the next step with his poles like a blind man. The snowfall had stayed thick and steady, leaving a powdery cap on his shoulders and hood, but the wind keened, a wailing dirge of increasing clarity and pitch.

It was almost like singing.

This was insane.

She was dedicated, but this was getting to be a bit too much. Her long hair whipped about in the wind, slapping her in the face occasionally and stinging any bits of exposed skin it could find, along with the bits of ice flying through the air.

The weather had turned into white out conditions by this point, and Nikki could hardly see where she was going. They would never find Articuno at this rate.

The girl came to a pause, turning to look behind her and seeing Hayes' outline a few feet away, battling the storm as much as she was.

Taking that moment of pause, she too noticed the pitch of the wind. She heard it too. But wait... it wasn't singing.

Suddenly Nikki looked up as a shrill high pitched scream joined the howling of the wind.

They'd be lucky to find each other if one of them got lost. Hayes was doing his best not to let that happen, but he could barely see five feet in front of him, and was beginning to perspire inside his layers.

This was moving past his danger threshold. It would have been a good idea to bring out the leading rope half an hour ago. As it was, the Rocket came close to stumbling into Nikki when she stopped, but managed to avoid her and come down heavily on one of his poles, awkward but upright.

He was gesturing towards a scraggly clump of pines making one last stand at the treeline - possible shelter - when the scream stilled his hands. Instinctively Hayes looked upward, seeing nothing through the falling snow.

"--- the --- was that?" He had to shout, and the wind still stole half his words.

She couldn't see it either, but Nikki definitely heard something.

Her heart skipped a beat. Could it be what they had come looking for? Could it be Articuno?

Thinking she knew which direction the sound came from, Nikki started to run. Or at least as much as she could with big snow shoes on. More like a fast trudging.

If it was the legendary bird, they had to find it! The sooner they did, the sooner they could leave this Arceus-forsaken mountain.

Completely forgetting about Hayes, Nikki's stubbornness won out on her common sense as she tried to go in pursuit of a bird she couldn't even see.

For a split second it looked to Hayes like Nikki was taking his suggestion to wait out the storm, or at the very least rest and regroup. But she made a beeline past the coppice.

Hayes' patience, worn thinner than he realized by sleep debt, the cold hike and getting smacked with a jacket, went with her.

The blond made a wordless sound of ire and started after her. Being taller by half a foot, his strides were longer, and he pushed himself to close the distance. Complaints from his muscles were ignored as he reached out to grab her by the shoulder, her pack, whatever offered purchase, and pull her around to face him.

She just had to find it. Surely it was close by.

Nikki continued to hurry through the snow, only to be abruptly haulted and yanked back as Hayes grabbed the strap of her backpack and turned her around.

Furious brown eyes glared up at him. "WHAT?!" she barked over the wind. "If you're too scared to go on, then wait here! I can handle this myself!"

She would get that damn bird if it killed her!

"Hr phm FRMFPH-" Hayes started at the same time Nikki began shouting. Instead of waiting for her to finish, he pulled his face mask down to be better heard and raised his voice above hers.

"Are you CRAZY? You're going to get the both of us killed and no, you can't!" He made a sharp movement that twisted her backpack strap once around his hand and yanked. "You don't even know if that was it, you're just running off blind like a damn idiot!"

Trying not to grimace as he yanked at her backpack again, Nikki's eyes remained furious.

"Who are you to be telling me what I can and can't do! You're nothing but a worthless, incompetent geek! What would you know?!"

She then tried to wrestle out of his grip. "NOW LET GO!"
