He'd cut her off, but Josie was too deep in the foot-popping kiss he silenced her with. When he broke away and laughed she was a little breathless and her anger had melted away. She stood looking up at him with a proud smile playing on her lips, showing itself intermittently like the sun through clouds on a windy day. She was still smiling when he let her go and lifted his gaze skyward.
"Josie please drop the tough girl act with me, you have no need to get stubborn with me, I did die for a moment Josie, I truly did... When you turned from my hand at that last moment... I had never felt a fear as I did then, my life being twiddled away by the one who did it to me before, I had truly let go of everything but you, I realized the tragedy in my ways, I never wish to hurt you, or to make you feel sad. I want you by my side forever..."
Josie caught his face in her hands and made him look at her, her pale eyes brimming with joy. "I would never have, Ertai, but that I felt I was being driven away. You seem to have a rough time with letting people know you actually care." He was quick enough to love and be gentle, but his attitude towards driving people the way he wanted them to go was something he himself had told her not to let happen. She wanted him to understand that she was going to stop letting people guide her by the hand and actually stand by her own, following them only because she wanted to and not because she was bidden to. "You do understand?"

"I understand everything... I seen my beginning over and over again... I seen the faces of those who I have killed... I seen your face..."
Ertai smiled as she held his face and quickly moved forward, scooping her up in his arms, holding her up. He would spin with her slightly and fall back into the grain, of course he would break her fall. His pale blue eyes just stared into hers as he looked up at her. A gentle and playful look just lay on his face as he was captivated by her beauty.
He would move his hand, brushing it across the side of her face, the leather glove vanishing as he touched her.
"You're so beautiful."

Though she thought it odd that he blocked her in with his violent origins and the people he'd killed (especially them; she was always put off by how violent Gaian men tended to be) she mentioned nothing of it. Josie chuckled a little when he pulled her down on top of him and held herself up on her elbows, her hair falling in a wonderfully scented veil around them. She closed her eyes when Ertai caressed her cheek and murmured something nonsensical under her breath.
"You're so beautiful."
Not to be immodest or anything, but she quite agreed.

Ertai lay content yet his mind was still on what had happened and what he had missed. He knew something had happened yet he couldn't put a finger on it, he knew he had died and came back once again... Ertai looked at Josie as she closed her eyes and cast another gentle smile. He knew his powers were never fully restored but the ones he had were strengthened. The change in his dynamic was less apparent to the untrained eye, but Ertai had gained a mortal edge, his body couldn't withstand the mass use of his abilities and took serious tolls on him.
"Like a gift sent heaven side, my saving grace..."
He kissed the top of her head and slowly sat up on his elbows as she lay on his chest.
"Josie what happened exactly?"

She lay her head down on his chest and snuggled close. Her nose crinkled like a rabbit's when a wand of straw dipped too close and tickled her across the cheek. Josie swatted it away with a lazy hand.
"What happened when exactly?" She murmured, hearing him but too intent on getting comfortable to answer him entirely.

Ertai didn't bother on pursuing what had happened and felt it wasn't worth knowing and best left as it is. Yet he couldn't help but feel like something was missing, like a familiar force he had known his entire life was gone... This weighed on him as he looked down to Josie and ran his fingers through her hair, brushing over her gently as if he was petting her. He laid down flat and stared up into the canopy of his world, the massive foliage that spread out into the sky, reflecting night and day as if they were nothing but mere ants in the multi-verse, and in many cases they were.
"Never mind my love... It was nothing..."
He wrapped his arms around her and sighed a content sigh, just enjoying the few moments of peace they had together before the next thing that lingered on the horizon came... Ertai was a being that enjoyed a continuous struggle and action, yet these moments of peace he relished more than the greatest victory he had achieved.

"Hrm..." Josie was already almost asleep when a thought occurred to her. She splayed her fingers across Ertai's chest, her nails plucking at him playfully. "Ertai, love," She began, "What do you expect of me?"
It was an innocent enough question on the surface, but there were many things she could mean by it.

Ertai looked down at her and thought for a moment hearing what she had to say, his response would be simple.
"I want you as my wife... My queen... My counter part for the rest of eternity... I want you to give me a legacy that will perhaps amount to something I could never be."
He drew silent after saying that and kissed the top of her head once again. Moving his hand skywards slowly he would turn his fingers and the sky would dim slightly.
"Watch..."
Ertai would close his grasp and all around them small blinking lights came fluttering through the sky. It looked as if they were translucent green butterflies that glew the same colors as the many moons in the dark sky. The fluttered all around Joise, one landing on Ertai's nose. If one would listen closely the soft sound of a violin would echo as they fluttered around in the beautiful twilight of Vexa.

"A legacy?" Her sleepiness vanished. Josie lifted her head and peered at him intently. "You want children?" He'd changed the sky overhead and bid her to watch, so she did, marveling at the green butterflies that fluttered down from the canopy high above them. They moved thickly in a great cloud together that enveloped the two not-yet-lovers (the definition of "lover" being obvious). She smiled as one landed on his nose and blew on it, sending the translucent thing skittering elsewhere. Josie did not hear the violin but nonetheless was moved by its music, swaying from side to side in his arms.
She'd not voiced her opinion on becoming his queen, but having been through so much together Josie didn't have to. He should know her answer to that.

Ertai looked at her and smiled slightly as the butterfly lifted from his nose and back into the air. He nodded in silence as she spoke, his hands coming up to her face gently touching it.
"I have nothing anymore but you and this world. I want another chance at what I have failed to be in the past."
He realized he sounded foolish when he spoke but he couldn't change what he had said even if he wanted to. His pale eyes would glow lightly as if stars from above. He leaned up and placed a kiss upon her lips gently.
"I really do want you as my wife, my equal, the one to balance me out as I will for you."
He looked back towards the sky and laid his head back down into the grain below.

Indecision ate away at her. On the one hand Josie wanted to give him something only she could; on the other, her own failures plagued her (not to mention a strong dislike --hell, a hatred-- of young children stemming from the times she'd been teased as a voiceless orphan). Thoughts of her own two children crept into her head, the two youths she'd abandoned to be cared for by her mute friend while she forgot who she was. Silvara should still have them... should she fetch them? Josie had originally determined to send them to Kenji, but...
Ertai kissed her. "I'm a terrible parent," She spoke as quietly as if the volume of her voice determined the truth of her words, "I would be your wife, Ertai, but as for being a mother again... I don't think I could." Josie was wracked with guilt over her previous children. She could not live to see herself fail. Not again.

Ertai knew why she was feeling the way she felt and understood it whole heartedly. He himself was a horrid father, he seen his children more as pawns and soldiers for his use rather than his own flesh and blood. His grandson was the only one of his blood line that he could see regularly but he himself was unlike Ertai.
"You miss them don't you? Your children, the two you had with Kenji... Josie you made bad decisions much as I have my entire existence... I just wanted a way to redeem myself and to enjoy watching a child grow up... If you're set in your ways than so be it... I just think knowing what you know now you would be a great mother, if you want bring your children here if they're alive that is..."
Ertai didn't really know what say beyond what he had just said, not wanting to touch any sore spots she might not have dealt with yet. He simply smiled and wrapped his arms around her again and this time rolled so he was atop of her. He sat up on her lap and had a foot to either side of her head, being careful not to crush her in anyway, more or less holding himself up.
He flicked her nose and tumbled backwards, standing to his feet quickly, holding a hand to her.

"They are, but... I abandoned them. I could not be a fit mother to them now even if I wanted to." Still, she gazed wistfully into the distance, yearning for her babies. She could almost see them: her shy little boy Desmond and his fierce twin Rebbecca. Rebbecca displayed some of the worst trends in Josie and her father Kenji: she was selfish, aggressive and bad-mouthed. Desmond was a sweet boy: loyal, loving... what little was best in his parents. Just as swiftly as the vision of them overtook her it was gone. Josie started to sigh and was cut off by Ertai rolling her over onto her back. He now sat on top of her, and as opposed to the first time he'd tried that maneuver (she'd freaked out and ordered him off) this time she laughed. She lay back and gave him a coy look from under her long lashes.
"Ertai..."
But before she could say anything more he flicked her nose and got up. Josie spluttered and flushed with embarrassment, "Hey!" He offered a hand to her and Josie took it, pulling herself to her feet.

Ertai pulled her close and brushed the side of her face once again. His eyes traced over her face as if he was looking for something, as if he had seen her for the first time. The color of his eyes shifted into a deeper blue as he kissed her neck gently swaying back and forth with her as he moved his hands to her waist, much like they had danced before.
"What is it my dear?"
He said in response to her calling out his name.
His body was warm as the winds became much cooler, the butterflies danced around in the rays of moonlight. The large tree gave a gentle noise, like the crush of waves on a beach, just a familiar tone to the beauty in the air.

"I... I don't really know now." The color rose in her cheeks as she gazed upward into his eyes. Josie pulled herself closer to him as the air around them grew cooler. It wasn't unpleasant, but he was so warm...
She sighed. "Ertai, I--"
There. Something in her head switched on again. As if her mind had been left dark and a light had just turned on, illuminating even the darkest corners of her thoughts... the memories started again. Josie blinked and moaned, "No, not again..."
