//Entry #1// Dear Diary, she began, and then preceded to scratch out. This was useless. She should be out there gathering intel for her Empress, like a good soldier, but instead her commander had decided she should write about her feelings. How utterly pathetic. There were more important things to do, like study Noir habits and battlefield planning and strategies...not sit here and write about how she was just so sad to be away from home. She did have some solace, though. One of the Noir soldiers, er, pawns she had befriended gave her some little trinket. It was a tiny mechanical bird that could actually fly around and chirp, and was absolutely marvelous. It's body was gold as could be, with eyes of sapphire and wings of turquoise, and the song was beautiful as well. She had decided to name it Kazue, after her grandmother, a fearsome Hong General. She hoped to follow in her footsteps, someday.
Well, down to business. She had no choice, really. Her Minister told her to write down her feelings, and if she ever wanted to be a Minister (or even General!) she had to play along like a good dog. The journal he gave her was bound in purple leather with white accents and was rather a beautiful piece of Noir craftsmanship. Everyone in the unit had gotten the same one, but still.
The paper was crisp, and fresh, and still had the smell a freshly bound book always does. Maybe she ought to name the diary too, to make it easier to write in. She had the perfect name, after a friend from back home that always used to try and get her away from studying and into trouble. Shin, she whispered, and caressed the book like a promise.

//Entry #2// Dear Shin, she began again, writing in the thin, flowery cursive that her mother taught her. She wrote about what she had seen of the Noir, and what she remembered of the Blanc. She supposed her next entry could be a compare and contrast essay, and then maybe she could write about how the Hong were infinitely better. That smelled of promotion to her, and she had been a soldier long enough. By rights she should have been promoted long ago, but she had been shuffled around from Minister to Minister (and even one Horse, much to her dismay). She was hoping to become an Elephant soon, and maybe since her Minister had assigned such a branching assignment it was a sign that she was going to be staying with him for a while. Then again, he could just be a jerk.
She could hear her father yelling at her for calling her superior officer a jerk. Of course, to be a Minister, you kind of have to be. Kiku imagined all of the places she could go as an Elephant, with her own troop of soldiers to boss around and enemy pawns to dodge, gathering intel, impressing the Empress...all of the new clothes she could get! She saw a lot of clothes in the Blanc kingdom that she liked, but she'd rather die than wear their clothes! She liked the richly designed kimono that her mother used to wear at formal occasions. That was completely wrong for battle, but if she became and Elephant she might be rubbing elbows with Generals and Chariots, and she'd need to look her best!

//Entry #3// That imbecile! She screamed in her head. She was back at Hong HQ after a long, grueling battle which she lost. The boy she fought (Jake, was it) was a Noir pawn. But it was hardly a fair battle to begin with! He had that...cactus thing. Then he pulled out that charm! The nerve of some people! A Hong would face battle with dignity and respect. None of that back handedness. Well, actually, a lot of that back handedness. Kiku just hoped this didn't screw up her hopes for promotion. Maybe if she could get a cactus like that...or a carp she saw one of her friends fighting against. She'd be invincible!
Ugh, she was bruised all over and had a few cuts. She hoped they didn't scar over, if there was one thing she was thankful for it was her looks. Well, her mind too, but mostly her looks. They got her places that an ugly girl couldn't go...got her in the Ambassador program when it was already full...heck, it even got her into the army in the first place! She was going to be sore for days, though, and she knew her Minister wouldn't care.
