Indeed, this was a little counter-productive, as the distraction made him collide in the nearest obstacle. At least this one wasn't his fault !
Kind of.
Maybe.
Her attempts to remember the pattern where more distracting to him than it helped, really, and he couldn't help but feel frustrated when she was right where, huddled against him, angry and frustrated ******** hell..." He wasn't giving up. Not yet.

Gently was absolutely dedicated to the game, and she noticed that the more she spoke out loud, the more difficult it was for him. She zipped her lip, wanting to work with him not make things even more infuriating for the both of them.
Soon enough, though not for the two playing maybe, they developed a rhythm. The further they went, the more they learned, the farther they could go. It felt endless, repetitive, and absolutely ridiculous that someone had actually programmed a level like this for children in the 8-bit era to play.
And then a miracle happened. The level ended. It was something Gently had never seen before, and for a long moment she couldn't believe it.
"We beat it?" The screen moved to load the next area. She let out a happy cry and threw her hands into the air, turning toward him and dropping her controller in the chaos of her excitement. "We beat it!"
Her reaction went far beyond finally defeating a childhood nemesis. Just being there, happy and well, despite everything that had happened and everything that could happen in their other job, was not something she could take for granted. And having him there, someone she had missed a surprising amount, someone she looked forward to seeing every day, only added to the rush of emotion. Tie that to the teasing peck she had just given him and was still in her head, and her instincts took over.
She caught his cheek in her hand and kissed him with surprising passion, unable to really put how much that simple little moment meant to her into words. She pulled back and, despite herself, felt a rush of warmth spread over her nose and cheeks. Blushing, she hummed thoughtfully.
"I... uhm... really like winning..."

There was shock all around. First, the shock that they'd beaten the devilish thing. Really, who had designed this for kids to beat, and how high were they when they did it ?!
While she had her very outwardly-focused happy moment, Matthew couldn't do much more but stare in utter and complete disbelief.
Second was, well, the kiss. This wasn't a playful kiss, no, unless her idea of playful and hers were a litttttle different.
For a moment, he could only keep on staring. Until, finally, he grinned.
"Well, I really like winning, too..."
And then he leaned in to kiss her back. ******** the game. The game could wait.

Gently thought he might want to hit the eject button and flee from the sofa after a surprise attack like that, but it seemed she had stunned him fairly well. She smiled when he spoke at last, the very short moment feeling like an eternity for someone holding their breath and daring not to do anything else that might mess things up.
Further, as the case might have been.
"I'm glad to hear th..." she let her words trail off, though, catching his lips for a second time. She grinned into the kiss, though she didn't let herself get too wrapped up in it. Pulling back, she patted him on the chest as she considered him with a curious expression on her face, an enigmatic smile and a bright glint in her eyes. She smiled devilishly at him.
"Well, there are other levels to be played. The game doesn't end there, of course. We'll have to keep playing."

Well that was certainly a nice and fun way to spend an evening.
And it was nice to see he didn't seem to have lost skill in the kissing department, through he couldn't help but be careful and slow, thanks to her bruises. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her.
"Oh." He said, a little dunbfounded, when she mentioned the game. He turned to look at the tv where, of course, the two toads were waiting, clueless as to what had happened right in front of them. "Right. Game."
It was hard to tell if he was faking this one or not.

Gently smiled at him, patting his chest and then settling against him. There was something indescribably comfortable about the whole situation, and she could easily get used to it.
Plus, gaming and kisses? That was a fun, new way to play.
She was very thankful he had stopped by, and she wasn't feeling bad about the camp fiasco, or the injuries she had taken. Bruises healed. Defeats were chances to learn. As long as she had something nice to fall back on, a game to play and a Matthew to cuddle, she couldn't really think how she could ever let herself get down in the dumps.
The rest of the afternoon was spent playing levels of Battletoads she had never seen before, and each time they survived a level she kissed him. It was very much a win, win day all around.
