Molly, honestly, wasn’t quite sure what to make of Gale’s expression. She was…waiting for some kind of response, but she wasn’t sure what exactly. When she was in high school, she often overheard other girls talking to their girlfriends about like-likes, and it often resulted in screaming, squealing, and a lot of ‘ohmaigawds’…but uh…obviously she wouldn’t be expecting that from Gale.

Um…really-really!” Molly replied, the blush spreading down at her neck now. “…Uh…you seem…” She didn’t know how to put it exactly. “…Surprised…? Molly hedged and smiled awkwardly. “I uh…told him he could do better than me but um…” She twirled a curl around her finger. “…Yeah! Um…were you expecting someone else…?”

Molly was very nearly the same color as her hair now. Meanwhile Gale was still attempting to wrap his mind around the fact that Molly liked Bix.

Bix. His best mate. The first person to ever treat him as an equal, and still treat him as an equal, even all this time.

Molly liked Bix?

Some part of his mind immediately went
"well, what about me?" - but he could not, in good conscious, be so selfish as to think that.

At least not in public.

"No," he said, and shook his head, feeling a bit embarrassed. "No, it's not that I expected someone else. Just a little...surprising, yes. I mean...I've known Bix a long time, since I first got here, so..."

He hesitated, then offered Molly a small smile. "You're probably really good for him, come to think of it."

Gale’s hesitation and silence made Molly nervous. It was during that time she couldn’t help but be self-doubting. Did Gale think this was the worst thing ever? Okay, maybe that was a little over dramatic, but the sentiment was still there. She so knew she wasn’t as awesome as Candace or Clarice or Clerise or…other girls on the Island…

She was snapped out of her thoughts as Gale finally spoke up, and she seemed to continue to hang on his every word. “…Um…wh…what makes it surprising?” She ventured. “Um…only if you don’t mind answering…if you do, then forget I said anything…” She waved her hand a bit, and then looked impressed. “That long, huh? It must be really nice to have long time friends like that…” Then cue more blushing.

“…Y…you really think so?”

"No," said Gale, realizing he had made her uncomfortable and feeling quite terrible about it. "No, it's not...it's not a bad thing, I'm just..."

He blew out his breath, his face coloring. "It's just that there's been a lot of girls here," he said finally, and pressed his fingers together, twisting the ring on his left index one. "Candace, Eva, Ju - Clarice, Clerise, Maddie, Cass, Saya, Fini...Bix was my first mate here on the island, and the first person to ever treat me like an adult and not a child. He's a good guy, but I was always waiting for him to find a girlfriend, except he never did. He flirted and acted like a dope, and sometimes I wondered what went on in his head - actually I still do - but he didn't ever ask anyone out."

Gale's eyes flickered back Molly, a hesitant smile on his face.

"So if he says he likes you and wants to go out with you, I think that's a good thing."

A pause.

"A really good thing," Gale amended, and flushed a little, twisting the ring a bit harder than he intended. "Plus, you're, you know...you're funny, and you're nice and you're pretty, so..."

Why was the floor not opening up to swallow him whole right about now?

Molly ended up resting on her elbows, listening and watching Gale intently as he spoke. She was always strangely fascinated with people’s past stories, and these little tidbits the Death Trainee was sharing with her weren’t an exception. Molly was feeling a range of emotions, honestly. Flattered, honored maybe, awed, and always, always humbled. Gale, you were the man, because Molly felt a whole lot better about this whole topic, even if she was apparently stained red from the blush at the moment.

She couldn’t help but laugh at one point, cupping her cheeks. “You know, I really was wondering…’why does Bix like me?’ and I had tried asking, but he told me ‘don’t bother trying to figure it out, that’s for me to know’…so, just the fact that you wonder what’s going on, I’m wondering too!" The Misty paused as well, and as Gale went on to say she was funny, nice and pretty well…she was wishing the floor would swallow her up too, because she wasn’t used to hearing such nice words from someone she respected and admired.

Oh my goodness…” She gasped, and then covered her face for a moment before her hands snapped out to grab onto his once more. “You’re making me blush, Gale!” As if it wasn’t obvious. “I’m so touched by your words! Thank you so much…it really means a lot to me! Especially coming from you! You’re so accomplished and skilled for your age, I think it’s amazing that you have that drive and determination, and I respect you so much!” Molly gushed giving her RPer diabetes because she has to type all this.

Internally, Gale was feeling a bit frustrated. How was it that Bix, with his ridiculous antics, had managed to not only find a girl to like, but find a girl to like that actually liked him back? And a girl who was fun and nice and kindhearted like Molly?

Life was so completely unfair. But Gale tried not to let any of this jealousy show, especially not to Molly when she was being so very nice to him.

Plus he still owed her for that time when she had found him, half beaten to death in the hallway, and had taken him back to his room, cleaned and bandaged him up, and made sure was all right.

He gave a small snort. "He's trying to be cool," said Gale, and shook his head. "Honestly, that guy...but the fact that he said that only proves just how much he does like you, since normally he would go on and on about one thing or another to try and impress you."

His voice softened a little, Gale giving Molly what might have been a slightly rueful look. "So the fact that he's not trying to impress you just means he really does like you."

And then Molly was complimenting him and Gale's face was getting redder by the second and then they both went off to live in Tomatoface Land with all of the other happy vegetables like Onionhair Village and Carrottop Lake and everything was hunky dory happy dandy and oh my gosh what am I even writing anymore I don't even

"No, really, well..." mumumbled Gale, now feeling thoroughly embarrassed and deliberately not looking at Molly. "I'm not that great..."

Do tell, Gale, do tell.

Molly blinked as Gale busted out his bro. “…Well, he doesn’t have to try very hard.” She laughed softly and reached up to rub the back of her neck shyly. Gosh her face and neck felt really warm. He really liked her, huh? She didn’t have a reason to doubt Gale’s words, but still, it made her shy. “…Th…thank you, Gale.” She murmured sincerely. “I…” She scratched her cheek and sighed softly. “…I have a hard time believing in myself.” She smiled at him. “It’s easier to believe in others, but it’s always the hardest to believe in yourself.”

Her smiled widened as the young man looked away and Molly decided then that she was now a polygamist because with Gale acting so cute she couldn’t possibly be limited to just one guy because she had a big heart anyways and could love them all. “Oh but you are!” She replied. “You really made me feel better…and this isn’t even supposed to be about me! We’re talking about you, so let’s get back on topic! Gosh, I’m sorry, bothering you with my worries like that…” Molly’s brows furrowed and she pulled her coffee cup back over to take a sip. “I’m ready to keep listening!”

He looked at her, a bit curiously.

"Why?" he asked, genuinely interested in the answer. "I mean, you seem pretty confident, and you're always so cheerful and giving to everyone else. It shouldn't be that hard to see that you're a good person, should it?"

Though really there was a lot of the pot calling the kettle black here, since Gale really did not see anything good about himself either. He relaxed a little, frowning slightly down at his cold cup of tea, one finger smoothing rubbing along the rim of it again.

"You're not bothering me," he mumbled, with his face still scarlet as he somehow inadvertently became part of Molly's Heart Harem. "You're...sorta helping me still, actually."

"I just worry that I'll never...find anyone else," he blurted out unintentionally, and then flushed even brighter. "That is...I mean, it's not like...we have much opportunity here on the island, and I'm pretty much younger than everyone else..."

Why.

Molly’s expression immediately fell as she stared down at her coffee cup, and much like Gale had been before, her thumbs starting to run along the rim of the cup. She looked like she wanted to say something. As quickly as her eyes had been bright and cheerful before, they were sad and anxious now. It was frightening how fast that topic could change her because of its weight and hold on her. It was the reason she was a Hunter after all. As much as she wanted to seek reaffirmation that she was either a good person or a bad one, there was that extreme hesitation in just dumping her woes onto someone. No one deserved that…

She couldn’t bother others with her problems…especially not when she was supposed to be helping Gale.

Molly bottled it again, and pushed it back, shaking her head a bit as she fought to put the smile back on her face. “Ahh…because I’m a silly girl, that’s why.” She answered after a moment, and sipped her coffee.

Her brows furrowed as she listened to Gale, and she set her cup down, rubbing her chin in thought. “…I think…” She started after a moment, “That when it’s time for you to find that special someone…that it will happen.” Her smile widened as she look at the Death trainee. “You are a good person…no…a great person, and I think…you just keep being that great person and the right one will come along one day…um…” She paused. “…I kind of…live in the present, if that makes sense? I don’t worry about the future too hard because I’ll stress myself out. You get caught in the circles of ‘what ifs’ and that’s no good, and you miss what’s going on in front of you…I take things as they come…and I think the same can be said of waiting for the right one.”

Except Molly was stuck in the past, too. She'd leave that part out, though.

Oh.

He'd said something wrong.

Immediately Gale's faced closed off, his eyes widening, his lips pressing together uncertainly. He could see the shift in Molly's demeanor, see the way she dropped her gaze, staring down at her coffee cup as though it were suddenly the most fascinating thing in the entire world.

"I'm sorry!" he blurted out, horribly embarrassed. He leaned back away from her, his face crimson. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to...to pry, I just..."

Gale blew out his breath in a long gust, ducking his head and pressing his hands to either side, fingers in his hair. "I can't seem to say anything right," he mumbled, pressing the heels of his hands against his temples. "And you're not silly. I'm just...I don't know how to talk to girls."

He felt his head spinning unpleasantly, Gale resisting the urge to just get up and walk away before he could do any more damage, but Molly's voice was quiet and gentle in his ears, and he twisted his head, peering up at her through the pale strands of his hair.

"...I just wish I knew what the future held for me," he said quietly, and sighed. "Other than loneliness and rejection from older women, I mean."

Gale blurted out he was sorry, and then Molly was just as red faced again, waving her hands spastically at him. “Oh, no, no!” She cried, “It’s alright, really! It was all my fault I—“ She paused, “Er…it...it wasn’t yours at all, I mean, it’s only natural to be curious, right? We wouldn’t…learn anything if we didn’t ask, after all. Like…um…maybe I wouldn’t have gotten to know you if I hadn’t ask to sit next to you that one day!” Molly’s lips pulled into a more genuine smile at the memory.

“…No, it’s not that at all…some things are just…um…sad…and it’s not like people can read minds, so they have no idea. It’s okay Gale, I promise!” The young woman stretched across the table, reaching out with her hands to grasp onto Gale’s once more. ‘Mother’ instincts were sensing a ‘flee’ response somewhere, and that needed to be nipped in the bud, her brows furrowing as she pondered that statement. “…Would we be happier or…sad if we knew what the future held for us?” Molly asked, rather seriously. “Oh Gale…I think…well, I hope it will be filled with more than that…and..you’re not alone, I think…because you have your friends! I’ll try my best to…be there for you, my hardest!”

Molly and Gale, TomatoFace Land residents forever

He hated feeling childish, but if there was ever a time that he did - other than Eva telling him no - it was now. Gale rubbed his fingers over his temples, sighing internally, and his gaze flickered over to where Molly sat, his face pink.

"Well," he said. "I'm glad you sat next to me. We're...we're friends, aren't we?"

The question sounded stupid, even to his own ears, but honestly sometimes Gale just did not know what to say or how to say it. Molly's hand closed around his own, and he glanced over at her, pressing his lips together.

"...probably not happier," he admitted, a bit grudgingly. "I don't know how I'd feel about seeing my future, really. I don't think I'd like knowing what exactly is going to happen to me, especially if I can't change it."

Her words made him blush furiously, but he appreciated it nonetheless, and may or may not have even given Molly's fingers a little squeeze in return.

A very little squeeze.

"Yeah, well...I'll...do my best as well."

A pause.

"Also if you and Bix get married, I'd rather not be the flower boy."

Molly just looked absolutely tickled.

We’re friends, aren’t we?

Friends.

YES!” Molly cried, throwing her arms up into the air as if she just scored a touchdown and nodded her head so hard one thought it was going to fall off. “We’re friends! Heeee!” Her hands then immediately flew back to Gale’s as he spoke, and her expression mellowed out, and she nodded her head again, though this time much more calm. “Yes…I feel the same way, actually! I think it’s better to just…take things as they come…”

She beamed, waiting as Gale paused and then spoke his words.

Also if you and Bix get married, I'd rather not be the flower boy

What?

If you and Bix get married

It wasn’t that the thought appalled Molly, no, not one bit. It was just…too soon and too overwhelming. They were just friends for right now! Molly still had no idea what Bix saw in her and why he’d want to even like-like her much less doing something as drastic as mar—

Oh.

The red immediately drained from Molly’s face as it unfroze and she finally blinked, breathing a sigh of relief. “…O…oh!” She got out. “Y-yeah! Of course…!” Cue belated, awkward laughter here. “Don’t worry Gale uh…if there…uh…ever was a we…we…wedding…You’d be the maid of honor!” Yes. Molly could joke to, when given the right opening.
