Her eyes widened and she stepped back slightly. He was the gentleman she had heard many ladies of society ooing over on their walks about town. From what she had heard from snippets of conversation he was the youngest owner of the department store in town, incredibly wealthy and as the ladies said he was very handsome. "I think maybe I shouldn't come for dinner at your house. I'm sure there are many more women from society who are much more beautiful and belong."

He carefully and softly placed his hand on her arm to reassure her. "Please, miss ...".

"Jennings. Elizabeth Jennings." She said softly. She felt the warmth from his hand permeate through the ragged edges of her sleeves. "I shall never forgive myself if rumours were to bring your down."

"Miss Jennings, that will not happen. And I have never given much about rumours, so please, be my guest", he smiled at her warmly and gently pushed her closer to the carriage.

She let herself be pushed towards the carriage and climbed in. "You are quite an extraordinary gentleman Mr Griffiths."

"I will take that as a compliment, Miss Jannings", he said with a slight chuckle as he sat down in the carriage as well. He knocked on the wall to make the coachman move the horses.

"So... why are you doing this?" She asked softly. "I know you said you want to repay me, but certainly most other gentleman I have met wouldn't go so far as to invite me to their house." She said frowning a little.

"I ... well, I don't really know, to be honest", a light shade of red flushed across his face, which made him look really sweet for a moment. "I want to repay you and I can see that you won't bring harm to my home. And ... no offense, Miss Jannings, but I do feel a little sorry for you. I don't think a lady like you should be living on the street. So if a simple hot meal is something to make that beautiful face of yours smile, I shall be a fool for not trying".

She blushed at the compliment and turned away from him to look out the window of the carriage. "I was born on the street." She spoke, just barely louder than a whisper. "I belong there, like all my family. There's nothing about me that makes me better or worse than the others I live around." Her fingers knotted together in nervousness, not knowing what to do with herself.

"What fi you are ...?", he asked just a softly as she did. He put his hand on her, making her look into his face. A soft smile curved his lips. "Some of us may be born in poverty but we're all God's creatures and we all need to work hard to find our way in life. This may have been a sign for you. A possibility to escape the streets ...".

She sighed a little in resignation and nodded. "Ok Mr Griffiths if you so wish." She turned to look out the window again. "It will be nice to have something decent to eat for a change."

He smiled contently for finally having been able to persuade her. "I can also offer you a hot bath, Miss Jennings. It's not much but it may mean a lot more to you than it does to me. And we can surely fix you something new to wear ...", he said and it seemed like he was pondering on what else he could do for her.

"A bath would be lovely. But I can't let you buy me something new to wear. It would be as waste. It would get ruined where I live, or someone would try and steal it from me." She smiled sadly.
