Kadentsu walked down the smaller hallway towards where she had seen the rooms marked on the map. As she turned a corner, she saw a couple of large openings and a few smaller ones. She figured the smaller ones might be storage and decided those would be best looked at last. She looked at the smaller of the two large openings.
"We can go into his room first. It was likely the Queen's room herself. The bigger room next to it was more likely the King's room. These rooms are always interesting to see. The last rooms we will check are likely storage areas."
She slowly turned into the doorway.

"The King and the Queen lived separately from each other?" Stephanie asked, an ear flicking in surprise. "My mother and father always had." Mind, they did not live in a palace such as this. Was she showing herself to be of a lesser class of royalty than her companion? Never before had she reason to doubt the purity of her linage, but it was her parents! Never had she seen since two so desperately in love. The loyalty they shared... she wanted that some day. Wanted someone she could love and be that loyal to, to raise a family with. And to do so living in a place like this.... no. She would not let herself think of her parents or herself as lesser royalty. She deserved to have a family and a loved one and a home such as this. Her parents chose to live that way, she was sure.

Kadenstu nodded at the mare, looking over her shoulder a bit at her.
"It's a long ago custom for the humans. I'm not exactly sure why, but back when they did these things, the two who were here ruling didn't always love each other. The marriage was considered a contract to make things better between two different worlds."
She looked back at Stephanie.
"I'm not sure I've heard of such customs being practiced now, however."
Noticing the slight worry on her face, she smiled at the mare.
"Those who love each other stay together. And they live the way that they want to live. If you love someone there is certainly no reason to make a secret of it."
Kadentsu walked into one of the side rooms, deciding it was a good place to start.

She smiled a bit, moving along side the other, reassured. It wasn't done now, and her parents were no lesser because of their love and dedication to each other. It was what she herself always wanted; to raise foals with one she loved. The gender didn't matter, and as much as she loved looking at beautiful Soqs, she would prefer love than beauty. But... she was finding herself drawn more and more to Kadentsu as they spoke, as they moved through the ruins. Beauty, brains, and royalty, a true peer. What Stephanie had always hoped to find. Not someone who needed saving, not someone trying to save her, but someone she could simply... be with. Who knew things, but also, she was sure, would respect that she knew things too. Someone she could learn from, and teach.
Kadentsu's last sentence struck something in Queen Stephanie, and she walked with her into the side room. If you love someone... no reason to make a secret of it... Did.... Did she love Kadentsu? Already? She wasn't sure... so she held her tongue, but... she realized, they had been through a fair amount of the ruined place... and she'd hardly looked around. Mostly she'd been looking at Kadentsu. And... she had left the metal circle she had wanted so, to follow the other. Stephanie's parents both said they knew from the first... could this... be that? Could she actually be... in love?

Kadenstu smiled at the mare, walking over to a wooden structure long since fallen. She poked her nose around near it a bit and found something silken. Pulling it out, it was a piece of silk cloth. Not a bad looking piece either. No large holes and time seemed to have forgotten about it. Looking at the other she gently placed the silk on a piece of stone.
"This is a fine piece of cloth. A nice color and it's in good shape! What do you think?"
She looked at the other with a large smile on her face, very pleased with her first find. Sure that if this was simply the first, there was sure to be more to find. Thinking on it, she decided that she enjoyed talking to this mare. She was interesting and seemed to enjoy learning the bits and pieces that Kadentsu knew of a place such as this. Not many other understood her fascination and need to look for things in places sure as this. Though she had found a lot of useful things looking around in ruins in the past...
"Maybe you could try poking around over there and seeing if you can find something in good shape? Or maybe even something you would like to take home?"
Kadenstu winked at the mare and went back to the wooden structure, sure that Stephanie would enjoy finding something shiny in the debris.

Stephanie approached the cloth that the other mare had laid out and rubbed her face against it lightly, to get a feel for it. She gasped in delight. "It is... wonderful. What sort of material is this?" Never had she felt something so smooth so... wonderful.
Then the rest of the words penetrated. Something she could find...to take home? Something from this fine place to learn about and then keep? A shiver of excitement ran through her at the thought, and when she was winked at, she found herself winking back.

Kadentsu beamed at the other mare. She was delighted that she seemed to make the other so happy in the simple mention that she could find something to take home with her. Making others happy is something she enjoyed doing. If it was as simple as letting the other mare take something home she liked, well it was the easiest thing she had done all day! Turning her attention back to the cloth, she nodded at the other.
"That particular cloth is called silk. It was used a lot for the females in the two-leggers world. It's a nice fabric. It's cool in the summer too!"
She smiled at the mare and turned to start digging around in the remains again. Sure she could find something else nice in that room.

"Silk," she repeated, lovingly. Even the name was lovely and felt smooth. She eagerly went to dig through the ruins herself, to see what else she could find. A circlet, perhaps, like they found in the first room? More silk, maybe even enough to fashion something for her to wear herself? She stuck her nose in a pile and began to carefully shift it around. Motion caught her eye and she glanced up, seeing the other mare.
Queen Stephanie found herself stopping in her digging to watch Kadentsu. She was so pretty, and Stephanie always had loved pretty things. And she was royal, which might be the only thing that Stephanie loved more than beauty. Add to that how much she knew, how nice she was, how helpful and sharing... how she seemed to be aware of Stephanie's concerns, and addressing them before she even thought to give them voice. There was just something... wonderful about her, about being here with her.
Blushing, for some reason, and unsure why, Stephanie lowered her head back to the pile and focused on looking for the leavings of humans, for anything interesting and royal. Normally that would have had her full attention, odd how this time her thoughts kept wandering back to her companion...

Kadentsu watched her searching companion out of the corner of her eye. It interested her to see the other enjoy the search. The search for things that the two-leggers had long since left behind and forgotten. As she thought about the forgotten things she started to wonder a bit about what happened to this particular castle. The structure here was mostly time worn, but she couldn't help but feel that there might be something else that happened here. Perhaps the ones who were here had been overthrown? Though she had seen ones that were war torn and they were usually picked over things worth taking. The silk and the crown still being present meant that something else. Perhaps the place was taken down from no longer needing the rulers, even if that was not often the case. Though another possibility could be a sickness that took over and destroyed all that was inside. The scholars she had learned about this place from hadn't known the answers themselves. Though it would be safe now to be in the place even if it had been sickness. The years would have long since taken care of such things.
She shook herself out a bit and walked over to a larger wooden structure covered in decaying fabric. Gently and carefully moving the time worn fabric with her hoof, she hoped she might find some more silk to light up her companions eyes. As she looked, however, it seemed as though all the fabric was moth eaten and ravaged by time. Certainly not fit for anyone and especially not anyone with Queen in their name. As she dug a bit more, a small Emerald fell to the floor. It was a good enough size for a bracelet, but not large enough to be worth anything in trade. She figured that it possibly came from another piece of jewelry one of the residents once had. She placed the Emerald into the bag she had brought with her and dug around a bit more.
She didn't want to rush her companion in her findings. Though the pickings were slimmer in this room than Kadentsu had felt they would be. They had the rest of the rooms to go through anyway. If she didn't find anything here, there were other rooms to find things in.

Hearing something, Queen Stephanie glanced over and saw her companion find the emerald, putting it into her bag. Queen Stephanie had found... nothing! Abashed, she returned to her search, desperate to find something, anything with showing, to prove she had been searching...
And why did she need to prove that? She wasn't quite sure, but she didn't know how to explain to Kadentsu that the reason she hadn't been searching as hard as she might, was because she kept glancing at her...
More... this was an unparalleled opportunity... to be able to search and take... especially with one who could help her identify things... This should be all she focused on, should be all she wanted to focus on. so why did her eyes and her mind keep wandering to the other?
Resolutely, she kept digging. Finally she sighed through her nostrils and raised her head, having to admit there was nothing she could find worth finding in the area she was working in. She glanced at the other, not looking forward to admitting her failure, but she knew that royalty did not hide from such admissions. She would admit her failure when asked with all the grace and dignity she had been raised to.

Kadentsu smiled at Stephanie, the other seemed sad, but there were other places to check. Other rooms to dig around in. There was plenty of other rooms to dig around in, so the other had plenty of chance to find something wonderful to take home herself.
"Are you ready to move onto the next room? There are a few others to check out and see what there is to find."
She walked towards the door slowly, looking at the mare. She wanted to give her a chance to decide on heading to the next room, or if she wanted to continue here until she found something, she was certainly welcome to. Kadentsu was sure that the mare would find something just considering there were other rooms to search.

Stephanie nodded, stretching a kink out of her neck as she moved to follow the other mare through this fascinating ruin. She sighed happily, looking around. This gorgeous place, this lovely companion... it was nearly perfect. All it would take was a foal or ten... and for any of this to belong to hers. Well, dreams were pleasant, even when one knew they were not to be, she supposed.

Kadentsu continued down the hall and into a slightly smaller room. Looking around it there was a lot scattered. Piles of wood and cloth alike in all four corners and a mass of stone in the middle. The ceiling looked like it had caved in at some point after the place was abandoned. She was a bit surprised considering how far in the room was. Usually the further in a room was, the better the condition.
"You can choose where you would like to look first. Then I'll decide where to look for myself. This room was an old storage area, so there might not be much. Though it could also hold some nice secret treasures."
She smiled at the mare as she stepped aside to let her in. She wanted the other to have a chance to find some things she liked. Kadentsu would transport them for her as well, anyplace she wanted to take them.

Stephanie nodded regally. "Thank you," she said. Her eyes cast about the old storage area. What must it be like to own enough things to need a place to keep them? Never before had she owned anything she couldn't wear. Ans however would you keep others from taking the things, unless you stayed there constantly? Obviously you couldn't. Stephanie and Kadentsu were prime proof, were they not?
Yet even realizing how many difficulties finding something she wanted to keep might visit upon her, she still felt a thrill at the prospect. She saw what looked like someone had made weird artificial cliffs, that nature had reclaimed in a land slide, leaving broken sheets of rock and wood, mixed with... well she wasn't sure what all was there, something glinted at her, and she headed that way.
She stuck her nose into the pile, going after whatever had caught the light and came up with a startled whinny. It hurt, but the shock had gotten her more than the pain, after all, royalty had to be able to cope with discomfort. In fact, she was ashamed to have made a sound at all. She pulled back her head, somewhat stiffly, and the thing that had reflected the light at her - a broken shard of glass, came with her, pushed part way into the tender skin of her nose. She crossed her eyes, but could not manage to see whatever it was. So how the hooves was she supposed to get it out? If she had been thinking clearly, that "how the hooves" thought would have rocked her back. No royal mare should ever utter anything that even sounded like profanity; even in thought.

Kadentsu watched as Stephanie seemed to spot something, going right for it. She was glad that she seemed to excited about digging around to look for something that caught her eyes.
As she turned around to start digging around in her own pile, she heard a sharp whinny from Stephanie. She reeled around to face her new companion, concern in her face. As she looked she saw a small about of blood coming from her nose, a small shard of glass sticking out from it. She snorted her concern and came over to the mare, taking a better look at the tender place.
"I am so sorry... I didn't know that there were pieces of glass in there... Hold still while I take the piece out of your nose. This will probably hurt..."
Kadenstu pulled gently on the bit of glass. Holding it carefully between her teeth, slowly working it out till she felt it slip. Then placing the glass to the side, she took the piece of silk from the precious room and carefully wrapped it around Stephanie's nose.
"This should do well to cover that up until we can get it properly dressed."
Kadenstu nodded at her lightly.
