Reacting instinctively, Jessalyn stomped and whinnied when the cat stepped towards her. Skinwalker. She had hoped to never see a skinwalker again when she ran away from her father and his dark herd. Running away had always been her policy when faced with something frightening, but now she couldn't run. Now she had her daughter to protect, and she knew in an instant that she would willingly risk death to see that her daughter was safe.

Through her domain she could feel the blood of those around her. All of their hearts were pounding, whether it was through fear or anger. She had used the powers of her domain to escape the Draculesti herd. She had hoped to never use them again for that purpose, but she had hoped a lot of things that didn't come to pass.

"I'm warning you..." she said, voice wavering with either anger or trepidation. "I am a domained pure angeni. I can defeat you if you do not leave!" She already was focusing, honing in on the feeling of the blood in the skinwalker's veins.

At first Kiij hissed in response, her ears back, her feline lips curling back in a snarl, as though she had entirely forgotten how to speak. She hadn't really. Now and then she spoke but it seemed such a rare thing. Normally she only spoke to herself having killed all her company. She had spoken in this form once, to a stallion that wandered into her lands. A long silence had passed before that day though. She remembered a time when she used to speak a lot, a time when she stood tall with others around.

Kiij had chased them away. Kiij had killed them with newly found strength. And after that she had remained in this body letting what she had been fade into myth.

Slowly Kiij's ears raised and she stopped hissing like a wild animal. Her teeth, however, remained bared. "An...gen...i..." She breathed slowly, a curse in every syllable. She hated this creature on an instinctive level. She had never met one until this night but Kiij new they were the worst of all the creatures in the land. Her blood surged just saying the word. She believed the angeni could defeat her, there was no question of that, but still she stayed.

"I am...starving." Kiij growled, her body flinching. Just saying it made her stomach feel empty. She wouldn't find food here, not with that mare guarding it, but still she stayed, waiting for some sure sign that all was lost.

Camilla was shocked and unnerved to hear the creature speak. She had heard it before but not quite like this. It sounded pitiful and absolutely ferocious all at once. It was starving. That was not a sensation Camilla knew. She understood hunger on only the most basic of levels. Whenever she grew hungry all she had to do was ask and someone would show her where food was, and food seemed to be everywhere. Camilla pitied this creature but she also feared it. She was the food it searched for and she would not allow herself to be eaten. Not for anything.

Her mother shared her views. It was an amazing sight for the young filly to see. Her mother naming herself as having a domain and coming to the rescue. These were things she never seemed to mention most of the time.

At a few moments of staring at her mother in awe, Camilla remembered that she was in a dire situation still. She needed to get out of this scrub before the skinwalker, as her mother called it, tried to get back in. Camilla shuffled quietly to one side and started pushing against the prickly branches hoping the snapping wasn't as loud as it sounded to her.

Jessalyn's eyes flicked to where Camilla was rustling around in the bushes. She wanted to tell her daughter to stay a little longer, stay where she had a barrier of branches between herself and claws. She wanted to, but she didn't tell Camilla anything. She feared that if she called attention to Camilla that the beast might remember its original target. She had to keep it focused on her now, and hope that Camilla wouldn't put herself in danger's way.

"That's right, angeni." She was surging with so much adrenaline that the tips of her wings were shaking. That was another thing that she hoped the skinwalker didn't notice, her lack of battle readiness. "Now, leave!" Contrary to what her body wanted her to do, she took a step forward. As she stepped, she gripped at the skinwalker's blood. Gripping was the only thing she knew to call it, that feeling of holding and slowing. She didn't slow the blood too much yet, she hoped that scaring it with a small show would be enough. It wasn't dangerous, but it would be noticeable strangeness.

Kiij hissed as the mare stepped forward, her tail bristled. Then Kiij abruptly stopped. Something was wrong. Her body didn't feel like her body. This was no result of hunger that Kiij knew. She took a step back, slowly, and then took another. This was the mare's doing? Kiij couldn't see how such a thing could be her but what else could it be?

A snapping sound drew her attention away from the bizarre mare and back to the brambles. The foal. Kiij lifted her paw to take a step towards the child but froze with it still hovering in midair. No. No she couldn't. Whatever was going on was unnatural and not understood. Kiij couldn't predict what it meant only that it was something bad. "I'm starving..." She mewled as pathetic as a new born kitten as she placed her paw back where it had started. Twice she had said that now and it didn't seem to be getting her anywhere. She couldn't win. She wasn't strong enough. The mare was strange and strong. Kiij could not win.

It hurt the skinwalker to turn away without claiming a life. She snarled and growled as she ran back into the forest away from the pair of wicked creatures. "I'm starving!" She cried into the wind one last time before falling silent. Her voice would do her no good. It never would.

Camilla kept her focus on getting out of the scrub oak. She could hear her mother, boldly facing down the beast. It gave Camilla hope that all would be well. She heard the lion calling of hunger again and it sent a chill down her spine. As she finally came crashing out of the tangle of branches, scraped and scared, Camilla turned to see what was happening. It was leaving and her mother stood just as she had before. Camilla smiled, relieved and proud.

"Mommy!" She called scrambling to her feet and racing to her mother's side. She pressed her muzzle against Jessalyn's leg and held it there not saying anything. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision, as everything began to sink in fully but they did not fall. She was safe now. Safe from all the terrible things at her mother's side.
