"I've met younger, on the island." There was a glitter in his eyes, though, that said not by much. As he spoke, he tipped his glass in a salute at her, not quite resorting to a wink before he sipped. Lukas took a quick glance around the place, expression melting from teasing to thoughtful.

"I need to get out of here. Where's a better place to go and sit? Anywhere else."

"They seem to prefer to recruiting from a specific age range." There were exceptions of course, but for the most part it looked to be all young adults and teens between the ages of seventeen and twenty five. Possibly they were easier to train, more easily influenced, less independent. She trusted Deus to have a reason. They had a reason for everything they did, even if it was bad one.

Brows twitched at the question, and she straightened up again, lips twitching thoughtfully before a small smile slid along soft lips. "Come on." She kept her glass as she started walking towards the door. "Bring the bottle."

Bare feet were soundless as she lead him out of the kitchen and back to the dorms.

"It's the bad choices age range, I imagine." Lukas snagged the bottle before following her -- his own feet soft against the ground, despite his boots, movements smooth and careful. It wouldn't be hard for him to just stretch out his legs and catch up with her, to fall in beside her. It would be harder to keep the pace, probably, instead of outstripping Peyton.

"Seventeen to twenty? The time in which you don't fully think everything through." Almost absently, he tipped back the rest of his drink. Then he'd wait, just holding the glass. He'd pour more once they settled. "I've been there."

"That probably has something to do with it," she agreed mildly. Seventeen to like, twenty five. There is the occasional exception, but it's few and far between. There was this one lady, I forget her name, but she was in her sixties or seventies. Absolute fluke how she got on the island, but she was. No idea what happened to her though, maybe H got rid of her." Her head cocked thoughtfully, thinking back to the cruise, the Doctor's disappointment in the woman still being alive.

Peyton was used to walking with people taller than herself. As Lukas caught up she adjusted her pace, made it easier for him. It was almost second nature at this point. She'd lead him through the dorms, towards the stairs, and all the way up to the roof.

"How'd you end up here?" There was a distant implication behind the question: an expectation, perhaps, of some kind of trouble that drove Peyton into Deus's arms, something that was much more telling about Lukas than anything else. He seemed oblivious, sliding past Peyton as they emerged onto the roof to have a good long look at the world around them.

It made him hum, thoughtfully, setting his glass on the roof's edge to pour himself something to drink. Thoughtful.

She stalled, taking her time finishing off her drink as she followed him out onto poured concrete roof. When the whiskey was gone, and she'd drawn up even with him at the edge, she folded her arms again, setting her glass beside his so he could refill her's as he poured himself more.

"I wanted answers, and I wanted to give my sister a chance at a normal life." She could have expanded on that, but she didn't. "That's not how it worked. Good intentions and all." Things hadn't exactly worked out for the better, but Astrid was here, they weren't moving from place to place anymore.

"How about you?"

There was a pause, while Lukas considered that -- turning over reasons in his mind, eyebrows knitted together as he poured for them both. The truth was straight out, in this moment, and he didn't feel up to too fantastic of a lie, and so he settled somewhere in between, capping the bottle again.

"They gave me the impression this place was very different than it is." He raised his eyebrows as he said it. "I had visions of...I'm not sure. But it wasn't dungeons and paperwork, certainly."

"A couple years back it was different," she chuckled, picking up the glance now that it was full so she could sip from it. "Well, the living arrangements, anyways. Death division has always had mounds of paperwork to dig through." Resting her elbow on the edge of the roof, she propped her chin up on her palm, head turning just enough to look up at him. "Trainees are supposed to be housed on the first floor, but the problem is we have more trainees than we have normal rooms for." Things had just started to really fill up when Peyton had arrived, now it was like a population explosion.

"If you pay attention you can probably snag a normal room as one of the intermediates ranks up to the second floor." Ever had managed it, and Cee.

"That's not the point though; over time all situations become better." Or much, much worse -- but he didn't voice that out loud, just thought it, as he sipped at his drink. Absently, he turned to face her instead of Deus at large, leaning in against the edge of the roof. He had to tip his head down to do so and, as he did, he absently curled fingers into the back of his hair.

"The point is that my impression was one of a military organization, not a ******** on an island in the tropics. And my impression was one of rules, not this chaos of inner hierarchy." He shook his head a little, thinking. "Tell me this place isn't like a prison."

To that she could offer little more than a shrug. When Peyton had signed on tot eh organization she'd had very few expectations of what she might find. It meant there was very little disillusionment for her, but she understood his point. Deus might not have disappointed her, but plenty of other things certainly had.

And recently.

"There's rules, just not many. Mostly they have to do with duty and following orders." Do your job, listen to orders. That was pretty much it.

She brought her glass up again, gaze sliding out across the island. "I've never been in a prison, but I think I'm safe in saying this doesn't really compare. We've got a considerable amount of freedom, so long as we do our jobs." Her nail tapped against the glass in her hand as she glanced back up at him. "Go anywhere, do anything, and all you have to do in return is risk your life a little." She smiled, amused, but it lacked a certain amount of humor.

"And so long as that anything or anywhere just so happens to be on this island, from which you can't leave without certain permissions?" Lukas shook his head at her, shifting just a little to stand closer, as if he was telling her a secret -- which did have the benefit of him towering over her a bit. Not something he got to do often, and something that would likely be even rarer here.

"I don't know. I've barely been outside since I got here, so it's hard for me to accept with cheerful optimism." All the same, he clinked his glass with hers.

She tipped her head thoughtfully, head turning to look out over the island, as Lukas moved closer. "I suppose where we come from colors our opinion." Their glasses clicked, and the corners of her lips drew up again. "Better for some then others." They didn't need to get into details.

A warm breeze was blowing up from the beach, and Peyton had to reach up, tucking stray curls behind her ear as they tickled along her cheek. Comb through it slender fingers to draw long, ombre curls over her shoulder.

"Give it a little time, maybe the place will grown on you." The smile grew a little wider. She could feel the warm spread of the whiskey through her legs, her arms. She brought her glass back up to her lips, tipping back a long swallow before setting it on the roof's ledge again. It wasn't quite a request to have it refilled, but if he happened to pour her more she wasn't going to turn it down.

By this point, they'd both had enough to drink to impair their facilities -- which apparently, for Peyton, made her warm and pliable. For Lukas, it did something else. It left all his movements too careful, too concentrated. This was the way drunks acted when they were trying not to seem that way, over-compensating for their slowed resources by moving very deliberately. It almost, almost worked. And it was very closed off.

"I don't think I have a whole lot of choice. It's not as if I can go anywhere anytime soon." And his tone was the same: slow, a little clipped as he worked to pour her just a little bit more, and himself, too. Now, though, he would nurse his drink.

She didn't know him well enough, and she was too delightfully buzzed at this point to notice the change, it had been too slow, too subtle.

She chuckled, grinning up at him as he refilled her glass, and rested the tips of her fingers along the rim of it, not yet bringing it back up to her lips. "You don't," and it was apologetic and softly amused. "So might as well make the best of it, right?" It was Peyton's philosophy, at least the one she tried to stick to. Some days it was definitely easier than others, but for the most part she managed.

Now she'd pick the tumbler up, clicking it gently against his.

He smiled at her again, at last: a flash of teeth, sharp in his face, as their glasses clicked together. It was simultaneously shark-like and, potentially, appealing, especially when he added a brief wink into the mix. Lukas was still close, now, comfortably so, lounging against the edge of the roof and just watching Peyton instead of anything else.

"Has anyone ever run?" When he asked, it was conversational, conspiratorial. It sounded more like digging for gossip than anything else, especially since his mouth was hidden behind another long sip of his glass.
